[DISCUSSION] Jeezy - Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 (15 Years Later)

Posted: 17 Dec 2020 01:51 PM PST

Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 is the major label debut and overall third studio album by American rapper Young Jeezy. It was released on July 26, 2005, by his indie record label Corporate Thugz, under the distribution from Def Jam. On the UK's album release, it features the remixed version of "Go Crazy", featuring guest appearance from rapper Jay-Z.

The album was supported by four singles: "And Then What" featuring Mannie Fresh, "Soul Survivor" featuring Akon, "Go Crazy" and "My Hood". The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 172,000 copies in the first week. The album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Critical reception

In 2015, hip hop writer Brooklyn Russell declared the album "trap rap's apotheosis" while observing its impact: "Working with only a handful of Shawty Redd beats and his naturally raspy voice, Atlanta native Young Jeezy would lay down the blueprint for an entire region of rappers—virtually knocking big players like Lil Jon out of commission."

In 2012, David Drake called it one of the classic albums of the last decade in Complex:

If the early 2000s marked the emergence of Atlanta as one of, if not the most important, scenes in hip-hop, Thug Motivation 101 was its apotheosis—the moment when all of the energy on the streets and in clubs, the apocalyptic production of Shawty Redd and Drumma Boy, the totalizing rasp of Jeezy's voice became a region and generation's defining sound.

By the mid-2000s, the club-friendly Lil Jon bangers had given way to something more dilapidated, harsher. The trap house aesthetic pioneered on Jeezy's Trap or Die mixtape and this album sent shock waves throughout the South, reorienting everything to orbit around its totalitarian vision.

Uninterested in self-consciousness or moral ambiguities, Thug Motivation 101 was anthemic and unapologetically bombastic. There was no equivocating; either you hated it, or you were swept up in the grimy grandeur. - DD

Apple Music description:

If you were hoping that an Eminem album released in 2020 would be less offensive, violent, or controversial, this album isn't for you. And the same can be said of this deluxe edition, released almost a year later, featuring 16 new tracks. In January, before the world entered lockdown, we were reacquainted with Eminem's chainsaw-wielding alter ego Slim Shady in an album as cold and uncompromising as the title suggests. And while some of us spent the year baking bread, watching TV, and chatting with friends online, Eminem pulled out his notepad. The extra tracks, released just before Christmas, carry all the aggressive, sinister, occasionally unacceptable themes we've come to expect from the legendary rapper. But they're timestamped with references to the pandemic lexicon: social distancing, hand sanitizer, quarantine, etc. "They say these bars are like COVID," he raps on 'Gnat.' "You get 'em right off the bat."

Unlike his last two releases, this album is neither pop-leaning (with exception of one Ed Sheeran feature) nor a straight-up diss record. For better or worse, most of Music to Be Murdered By is simply Eminem doing what he does best: gratuitously savage, antagonistic rhymes for the pure, juvenile sake of it. Longtime stans will rejoice to find three (!) collaborations with Royce da 5'9", particularly the frenetic 'Yah Yah,' also featuring Q-Tip and Denaun. The beats on 'Stepdad' and 'Lock It Up' are second to none, while 'Little Engine' and 'Farewell' wouldn't feel out of place on albums released two decades ago.

But the world has changed in two decades. The divide between Eminem, lyrical savant and god of rap, and Slim Shady, a trigger-happy psychopath, has always been difficult to bridge. It's harder to hear shock-value sucker punches about domestic violence and disability—least of all because they risk discrediting the genuinely powerful moments that Eminem is so uniquely capable of. The song worthy of the most discussion (and controversy), 'Darkness,' is one such moment: What begins as a tender, personal tale soon reveals itself to be the disturbing account of a man committing mass murder from a Las Vegas hotel room, before ending with a series of breaking-news voiceovers reporting on real-life mass murders throughout America. For all the wrath and bloodshed on Music to Be Murdered By, its most provocative song is its least fictional.

Theophilus London is a scammer, master manipulator, and possibly lied about being hacked

Posted: 17 Dec 2020 07:40 PM PST

There have been numerous accusations against Theophilus London that he is a scammer. He attempted to scam me this year and numerous others in the past 2 years. He ghosted me after paying him for a feature for $500, so I tried to spark conversation to get him to send it over, which he never did, giving me the excuse that he did not like my beat. After I called him out on his BS, he sent me a beat for the same price, which I thought was fair at the time but now I know is a complete ripoff. I gave my excuse for being so angry that I am bipolar (which I am not really anymore) to calm down the situation so he would send me my money back. Read my entire conversation and see how he tries to manipulate me into thinking he cares about the feature. Telling me I don't need to be so aggressive when he was ignored me for half a year, and blatantly lying saying I haven't communicated with him which makes ZERO sense considering I messaged him all the time and he never responded.

I thought this was all confusingly resolved until I heard rumors of him scamming others. I learned today he had a different excuse for attempting to scam another person who he said was being scammed by London as well, u/FerdiFloyd. London's excuse to him for scamming a feature was that he was hacked and the hacker was scamming numerous people. He NEVER mentioned this to me. And you're probably thinking why he never mentioned this to me? Well, its because he might have lied to u/FerdiFloyd. London was probably never hacked, and he was scamming multiple people himself. u/FerdiFloyd believed London's shitty excuse, but I am not that gullible.

It is important to note that London sent me a picture of him in the studio saying he was working on the feature on October 19, 2019, which proves he was completely in control of his instagram at the time he said he was "hacked". I really wish I screenshot the photo, but you need to believe me by the disappearing image icon that appears in my conversation on that day. Don't be gullible, Theophilus London scams his own fans, and is one of the most inconceivable manipulators in music today. I have seen comments on u/FerdiFloyd's now deleted post that others have also been scammed by London, and London has also deleted comments on instagram regarding being a scammer. Today I sent him an edited version of the beat after 6 months of no talking to see if he would respond, and he left me on read. I sent him my final message today to see if he gives an explanation. He hasn't responded yet but I will update if he does.

For your information, I am NOT the producer Vegyn. I am a 19 year old college student and artist from Pennsylvania. I am honestly not sure what to do about this situation. I was thinking of pitching this to music websites, but I am not sure if I will be taken seriously. Thanks for reading.
