XXL Freshmen Overview #1 - Abby Jasmine, Asian Doll, Bali Baby and BamSavage Posted: 16 Apr 2019 05:44 PM PDT OK, and we back. For those who saw the original post about 6 days ago (which might have been a few of you, since it got about 350 upvotes #noflex), this overview has gone through some changes courtesy of recommendation of "beloved" /r/hhh mod - /u/cohtoh. Now, instead of giving individual 750-word overviews about each artist, clogging up the sub as interest decays, I will be offering a 20-part series on the XXL nominees by covering them 4 at a time, giving a brief profile and paragraph to each artist. However, for those who prefer my long-form writing or just want a better look into the work of a particular artist, I've chucked the "uncut" versions of each profile onto a WordPress for you guys to check out too if needs be. I'm actually pretty proud of some of my long-form writing for this section so I'd especially appreciate you checking these longer articles out. Anyway, without further ado, let's listen to some up-and-comers... Abby JasmineAge: 20 Sex: Female Location: Staten Island, New York Spotify monthly listeners (ATOW): 44,757 Pitch video like/dislike ratio (ATOW): 271:425 (38.9% liked) Listened to: TRAP MOM Recommended if you like: Bryson Tiller, Tinashe, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj Three Songs to get you in: Message, No Hook, Why U Mad
Starting off as a girl who got Twitter famous freestyling popular songs, Abby Jasmine now sing-raps over dark production on her recent EP TRAP MOM. The record isn't anything too special, but definitely shows Abby to have some potential with both her lyrics and her hooks. There are definitely some decent songs on this record, but honestly the main thing Abby needs to become a stronger XXL candidate is an image. At the moment her voice isn't distinctive enough to give her rise in the game and she lacks a big song for people to attach her to. Her music videos are seriously lacking an original vibe, with her recent No Jumper featured video for No Hook feeling like a re-hash of an AWGE video. She has some good late-night driving and chillout music here, but she needs a little more before she is up to the standard of appearing on this list. With TRAP MOM's short runtime, I'd probably give it a listen if you like that sort of mood music and lack female artists in your listening habits. Fit for the list? - NO Will she make it? - NO Asian DollAge: 22 Sex: Female Location: Dallas, Texas Spotify Monthly listeners (ATOW): 233,848 Pitch video like / dislike ratio (ATOW): 1K:1K (50% like) Listened to: Rise of Barbie Doll Gang, Outtaspace, So Icy Princess, various remixes Recommended if you like: Gucci Mane, Gangsta Boo, Kodak Black, CupcakKe Three songs to get you in: Gummo (Remix), Rock Out, Real Bitch Anthem
Asian Doll has been dropping music since late 2015, but now that she's signed to a strong label in the form of Gucci Mane's 1017 Records, she definitely stands a greater chance of getting her name out there. Asian already has an established fanbase to some extent and some remixes that have given her name some traction (Lame N*ggaz, Gummo). Her aggressive image and bars have definitely given her an image she can stick with, but honestly her sound on her most recent record, So Icy Princess, is all over the place, with songs sounding like Rich the Kid (Rock Out), Meek Mill (Hardest Doll, Southside) and Lil Pump (NASCAR). I would recommend her earlier record, Outtaspace, far more to new fans, as although some tracks are totally grating (OMW), the sound here is more coherent and feels more originally her (Real Bitch Anthem, Chapter 1). Personally, I think her bars and sound need a little work before she could get on this list, but she has the image and fanbase that I could easily see her getting on there. Fit For The List? NO Will She Make It? MAYBE Bali BabyAge: 21 Sex: Female Location: Atlanta, Georgia Spotify Monthly Listeners (ATOW): 313,596 Recommended if you like: Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Peep, Trippie Redd Listened to: Bali's Play, Baylor Swift, RESURRECTION Three songs to get you in: Introduction, Aquafina, Amber Alert
Bali Baby has a very varied discography, both in sound and in quality. She splits her personality into three forms – Bubbles Bali, Brazy Bali and Baylor Swift. Essentially, Bubbles Bali makes chill music that sounds like Lil Boat 1, Brazy Bali makes aggressive 808-driven trap that sounds like Lil Boat 2, Baylor Swift makes ratchet electro-pop that sounds like Animal (Ke$ha's debut album). Honestly this makes her seem like more of a joke than she is, as she does have a strong fanbase, a high-profile Trippie Redd feature and some genuinely good songs, she just lacks a lot of quality in lyricism and consistency. Honestly, I would still give her a listen, especially to her newest project RESURRECTION (which is under 20 minutes long), as she is at least a unique voice in the landscape of hip-hop at the moment. If you need any proof of that, feel free to listen to the madness that is Baylor Swift. Still, don't expect much and don't expect her to make the list, especially with no real label backing her and a lack of a sticky hit to her name. Fit for the list? - NO Will she make it? - NO BamSavageAge: 18 Sex: Male Location: Coral Springs, Florida Spotify Monthly Listeners (ATOW): 31,344 Pitch Video like/dislike ratio (ATOW): 621:212 (74.5% like) Recommended if you like: XXXTENTACION, 88GLAM, Lil Peep, The Weeknd Listened to: Yesterday's Tomorrow, various SoundCloud loosies Three Songs to Get You In: Light Show, Feelings Aside, Wrist Lit
This guy feels like a boring XXXTENTACION. After XXX's death a large compliment paid to his music was how diverse it is; BamSavage is like XXX if all of his songs were reworkings of SMASH! and he took 3 Xanax before recording each of them. BamSavage has a total lack of any decent bars, is nearly impossible to understand and has almost no energy. He doesn't even have a fanbase and only achieved a placement due to his signing to Republic Records last year. He definitely won't make the list this year, but I have a feeling Republic are going to push him a little harder with his next project, as they really don't have anyone like him on their label. If you really, really like Florida hip-hop and Members Only, I can maybe give his recent EP Yesterday's Tomorrow a soft recommendation. For everyone else, stay away. Fit for the list? - NO Will he make it? - NO Overall, all of these four rappers offer something distinct and different. If you have to check one out, I'd say Bali Baby, because I reckon she has a real killer project in her if she collaborates with the right people. However, I don't think any of them will make the list. Join me in 4 days time, when I take a look at the next 4 XXL hopefuls - namely Bandhunta Izzy, Benny The Butcher, Bhad Bhabie and Blueface. Should be a controversial set. Thanks to the mods for helping me with this and thank you guys for your kind comments in the previous posts. Thanks for reading this whole profile as well, of course. IF YOU LIKE OR HATE THIS POST OR SAW A FACTUAL ERROR OR A DUMB THING I SAID, PLEASE LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS. THANKS![link] [comments] |
