Recommended If You Like Thread - March 23, 2019

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 11:04 AM PDT

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

[DISCUSSION] Madvillain - Madvillainy (15 Years Later)

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 05:25 AM PDT

Madvillainy is the debut studio album by hip hop duo MF Doom and Madlib. The album was recorded between 2002 and 2004 and was produced entirely by Madlib, who created most of the album's instrumentals during a trip to Brazil, composing in his hotel room using minimal amounts of equipment.

"Madlib and MF Doom's classic wasn't meant for the radio, but it was too good to be kept to the underground"

Madvillainy received rave reviews from music critics and hip-hop fans, who praised both Doom's lyricism and Madlib's production. The album has appeared in various publications' lists of the best albums, including NME magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

But what are your thoughts on this album 15 years since it was released?

Some points for discussion:

  • Best tracks?

  • The album's 22 songs are short, vignette-like and contain no hooks or choruses - is this a musical approach you like?

  • Despite originally featuring a more enthusiastic and excited delivery, the 14 month early leak prompted Doom to go with a slower and more relaxed flow on the final version of the album. Was this style better suited?

  • Best verse?

  • "If language is arbitrary, then many of Doom's verses exploit the essence of words stripped of meaning, random conglomerations of syllables assembled in an order that only makes sense from a rhythmical standpoint" - What do you make of the album's lyrics and Doom's overall style of writing?

  • Best beat?

  • What are your thoughts on the production and Madlib's use of obscure samples? How does it compare to his other collaborations with rappers?

  • What impact did this album have on hip-hop as a whole?

  • Does this album deserve classic status?

[DISCUSSION] MF DOOM – Born Like This (10 Years Later)

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 06:28 AM PDT

DOOM's third studio album under the MF DOOM alias, Born Like This dropped today in 2009. How is everyone feeling about it 10 years later? I personally think it is DOOM's most overlooked and darkest album with some absolute killer tracks like 'Gazillion Ear' and 'That's That'.

  • What is your favorite track?
  • What is your favorite verse?
  • DOOM is known for his quotables. What is your favorite bar?
  • Do you think the darker production suited DOOM for this point in his career?
  • This is DOOM's last solo record (for now). Do you think he'll make a much-anticipated solo return any time soon?
  • DOOM has arguably the best and most consistent discography in hip-hop history. Where does Born Like This rank among DOOM's discography?
  • Do you think the track 'Batty Boyz', with its homophobic lyrics, was a product of the times, hip-hop as a whole, or reflective on DOOM himself?

[DISCUSSION] Eydea & Abilities - E&A (15 Years Later)

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 09:39 PM PDT

15 years ago Eydea & Abilities released their 2nd album E&A. It was released on Epitaph/Rhymesayers.

Eydea was fresh off of wins at Scribble Jam and HBO's Blaze Battle. Abilities was a two time DMC champ. With this sort of pedigree the expectations for their work together was incredibly high, and alot of people felt like they didn't live up to their potential with their first record "First Born".

I love E&A. With the first track "reintroducing" eyedea proved he meant business with his lyrics, and Abilities showed us that he was one of the best DJs in the world. The album peaked on Billboards Indie charts at #25, and the Billboard Heetseekers chart at #37.

After revisiting this album several times today I realized how much I miss having a DJ as a regular part of Hip Hop.

My favorite tracks are Now (that outkast sample is so good and Eyedeas flow is bananas on this shit), Kept, Exhausted Love (which I've had in rotation since its release, and is one of my all-time favorite songs of any genre), Star Destroyer (feat Karnage, and is a classic battle track which we know is where Eydea was best at), Paradise, Man vs Ape, E&A Day, Act Right, and Glass (which is a classic emotional Eyedea track).

What are your favorite tracks from the record?

Do you like this record? If so do you think it has stood the test of time?

How do you think it stands vs other E&A/Eyedea/Oliver Hart projects?

RIP Mikey
