A massive guide to Kosovar Hip Hop

So I've been wanting to do this for a long time but I was afraid that it might not take off at all, but I've talked to a few guys that were interested, and if it's only 5-10 guys that might be interested, that's enough for me :)

I promise this will be interesting, our hip hop scene is the best in Europe after England, but very few know about it, but if you check out the artists and songs I post I promise you will realize that too!

Even if you really don't care about our Hip Hop scene, at least check it out a little, I promise there's everything from Hardcore rap, to boom bap, gangsta and Atlanta Trap here. And since Kosovars are Albanian, I might touch on Albania's hip hop scene too!

American pop culture is huge here in Kosovo and our rappers are all influenced by American rappers and you will definitely find something you like, so please stick around or at least read the thread if you have time!

So I'll start out chronologically.

Our Godfather of rap;

Unikkatil

He started out in the 90s rapping against the Serbian regime. His music was heavily censored by the state but his popularity soared. Later on after he got involved in a feud and fled to the US. He lives there now and has his label called TBA (The Bloody Albos).

Everybody respects him but there are people who say he is a little overrated. And I think so too. Nowadays his music sounds a little dated due to the production, but his contribution to Albanian/Kosovar rap has been immense. There was one who didn't think so, a rapper called Hysen who dissed him a couple of years back, and Unikkatil responded, it wasn't pretty.

He also forged the unofficial Kosovar anthem:

Shota - This song is a classic, the biggest rap song in Albanian history. This plays in every single party, in every club every time. Everyone knows Katili's first verse. It's basically gangsta rap mixed with storytelling in the second verse by Jeton. The instrumental is an old Albanian folkloric composition.

Nowadays Katili doesn't rap anymore, he featured in a verse in a song by veteran rapper 2po2 a few years ago. Nowadays he mostly comments on political issues, his very patriotic and also nationalist and expresses it all through his music, all mixed with great storytelling and gangsta themes.

Now onto our Wu Tang clan;

* NR

NR (UrbaNRoots) - was formed in 97. The group consists of BimBima, Ergeni, Real1 and DJ Blunt.

These guys were East Coast and reggae fanatics.

They debuted in 1998 with the song;

Shume Vrasje - This song details the rough times back then. The war was in full blow and it was really fucked up at the time. In the villages and the countryside there was war and civilians were getting killed and their homes destroyed whereas in the cities it was full on regime, curfews were enabled, people were locked in homes, they were fired from their jobs and children were not allowed to attend the schools because the regime didn't want to allow Albanians mix in with Serbian kids. This led to crime rising in the cities when at the same time the police were beating and killing people.

But they got their epic high with their debut album in 2003;

E-Gjeli - This album is hardcore East Coast rap, even the album art is OldSchool af. Standout tracks:

Afrim Roboti - This song was soooo popular back then.

Axha Bastard - Classic track to say the least.

Raptishizem - You East Coast fans might recognize this beat ;)

Sometime after they disbanded since Real1 and Dj Blunt wanted to go commercial and Ergeni and BimBima wanted to stay underground and keep doing underground music.

Nowadays Ergeni and BimBima are well respected by everyone and considered among the best rappers in Albanian/Kosovar history. Ergeni doesn't really do music anymore but he did drop a song over Futre's Mask off beat last year:

BimBima however still drops songs from time to time and is socially conscious and very critical on the current politicians and governing body, he touches on the problems facing our society nowadays, the youth etc. I will come back to him later though because he played a part in a huge thing in Kosovar rap.

Real1 and DJ Blunt however have.......gone full retard to say the least. Like seriously. I don't know if it's all the drugs they've taken over the years but they've aged like 40 years in 20. They still do music, they do Trap now. And well if you do trap about drugs, women etc. by the age of 40, you kinda have a problem. They call themselves Shaolin Gang (Yes they copied it from Wu Tang, quite a shame since they would pay homage to them back in the day). You can laugh at them for yourself if you want, here's their channel. It's quite a shame what happened to them tbh since DJ Blunt is a very talented producer but oh well.

The chubby duo;

Kaos

This duo is made up of Lumi B and Vig Poppa. These guys worked in the early 2000s too and took of around 2006 when they dropped the veeery popular song:

Hey ft Dj Blunt & Bardool - This song was so huge at the time. People still know it. The hook

"Hej a din qe frajerin e ki gej, Ftyren e ki llom e bothen ki okej, kshtu qe dridhe prapanicen, tash deshe maicen"

"Hey, ya know your boyfriend is gay, Your face is trash and your ass is okay, so shake that ass, and now take off your shirt"

This hook is engraved into every Kosovar's head. It's about going to the club and basically every bitch having a boyfriend. Yup.

They still do music, just not as a duo anymore, they're on good terms though and their new songs still become very popular.

The underground king:

Elinel

Elinel is a very talented rapper. He started out with his clique ABSTRACT in 2010 and debuted with his amazing underground mixtape:

The intro track "Aftsi per jeten" shows his amazing wordplay and gritty descriptions very well.

He went on to drop fantastic underground songs like:

Bullet - Fucking classic shit right here. Maybe the most famous Underground song in Kosovar rap. Shit this brings back memories. Also you might recognize this flow somewhere, yes fucking Drake stole from him.

Legend - highlighting his wordplay and aggressiveness

Everything about him stood out, it's as if he was born to rap.

As time went on though he started to become more and more commercial to a point where he abandoned the underground. He fell off quite a bit since then and he clearly stated that as much as he doesn't like it, he has a wife and a child now, and he must keep them fed, so he has to embrace this commercial rap. Lately though he's been going back to his roots.

Now onto our Trap Lord!

Buta

Buta is a young rapper, he basically introduced us to Atlanta trap. he is very popular and honestly a pretty good rapper. He' still young but he is already very accomplished. He debuted with the song;

Hashish Thaqi - A play on our President's name (Hashim Thaqi), who is also coincidentally a crime kingpin.

He dropped his debut album in 2017:

Pranvere/ Vere '17 - Great album tbh.

He recently dropped a new album:

Vjeshte/Dimer - Some great tracks, my favorite though;

Pa arsye ft Qendresa - Amazing song tbh, and a lot of soul too with the feature of Qendresa, sounds like an American.

Now I will get to an interesting one:

KMN Azet

Azet is a newer rapper, he's been in the scene for a few years however. He lives in Germany and raps mostly in German but he's been rapping more and more in Albanian too lately.

Azet's had a troubling life to say the least.

When the war kicked off, him and his family fled to Germany when he was only 4. When he was 5, his father suffer an accident which paralyzed him from the waist down and Azet had to start taking care of his family from a young age. Growing up in Dresden in a rough neighborhood he became involved in crime and lived as a criminal for a long time. He formed a group called KMN with Zuna, Miami Yacine & Nash. Azet is the only Albanian among them though.

in 2016 he was arrested and went to jail for drug trafficking & assault.

A song was released one month after his arrest and it blew the fuck up:

Patte Fliesst - Wow, what a song, if anyone here speaks German too, they will know that this song is an amazing gangsta/ storytelling piece. It details his struggles very well. That paired with the amazing Oriental instrumental it makes an amazing song. but that's not all.

Azet's big, big, big break came last year:

Last year he dropped his debut album with the lead single:

Uberlebt - This song was so fucking massive, I have rarely, maybe never seen a song blow up this much in Kosovo.

His debut album:

Fast life - Amazing album tbh, gangsta/storytelling rap.

This album and the lead single propelled Azet to fame like I've rarely seen. He and his clique KMN are repped on sugar cubes in a restaurant ffs.

Standout tracks:

Villa in weiss - As the title suggests (Villa in white), the song is about that. Well more exactly what he says he will buy for his mother. He lays out his struggles and his love for his mother, the troubles he brought to her doorstep with his criminal life and how he will change everything and give her the best life he can. Beautiful song.

Kriminell ft. Noizy, Zuna - Gangsta af.

Ketten Cartier - Beautiful song, gangsta af too.

9 milly - Gangsta, a nice flute and catchy af hook.

He dropped an album with his fellow KMN member Zuna a few days ago:

Now we get to the big thing, I saved this for the last, these are our Gods of Rap. They form a great family but I will start off with the two kings:

Lyrical Son

Charismatic, amazing flow, and one half of the epic duo that rules Kosovar and Albanian Hip Hop. He is no doubt one of the greatest to hit the mic

He started out with music very young, he got into rap later on in school and got his name when he wrote a song in English class and his professor wrote "Nice lyrics Festim".

He got into mainstream early on like in songs like:

Albanian ft. Etnon & Dj Blunt - Fuck this song is old, but it's hella patriotic and nationalistic, I love it.

His big break came however with the Rap/Regae song:

Tabullarasa - This song blew up and put him really into the scene. I always wanted to know to whom that sweet little booty in the video belonged to ;(

His standout album:

ZIMASAMSHEVY - Great album

I will cut it short here however because I will have to move on to the other King, because from here on out everything he do will do with him:

MC Kresha

Kresha is the other King of Albanian/Kosovar rap, and many consider him to be the greatest of all time. And tbh, it's actually not far fetched at all, he is fantastic. In almost every sense. He debuted on the scene rather late however.

Lej Flleshat - This was his big debut. This song was very popular back in the day.

He would go on to drop popular songs like

He dropped his debut solo album

He also dropped a great solo album in 2014:

But this wasn't all with Kresha. He started working with Lyrical Son early in his career and the two bonded quickly and formed an epic duo together.

Per Inati t'njoni tjetri - A great first effort, filled with good experimental songs. My favorite would have to be

Diskotetk me Uzi - Really popular song back then.

Their biiiiiiiig break as a duo tho came around 2015.

in 2016 they dropped an absolute gem of Albanian rap:

Rapsodet n'rep t sodit - Wow, this album is amazing, nothing to say, this definitely ensured their place at the top and crowned them both as kings. Standout tracks:

Era - Beautiful love ballad, it samples a classic Kosovar Rock song.

Hip Hop - Oh wow, this song was huge, this is a good contender for best Albanian Hip Hop song ever. It's a great Old school homage to Hip Hop, and their love for it.

Nuk o faji jem - THE BEAT. Nothing else to say, listen for yourself.

Thirri krejt shoqet - OH FUCK, this song was huge, fantastic beat too.

Now, this wasn't all to it. Before all this, both of them joined a label called PINT. This label was led by BimBima(remember him?). And they were doing great at first together, but as time went on Lyrical Son & Kresha wanted to go more commercial and Bima was opposed to that, so he left the label in their hands and moved on from it. There was no animosity tho, they are still in good terms with each other.

Now whoo boy, PINT will become the new Death Row, if it hasn't already. Before I get into them, I will have to go into my favorite rapper, our prodigy,

Lluni

Consider him Joey Bada$$, except that he is actually taking off and becoming more popular every day.

Lluni started rapping in his hood and grew up with East Coast rap. He was heavily influenced by boom bap and East coast rappers like Nas, Biggie, Method Man, Slick Rick, Jay-Z etc.

He dropped his debut mixtape

Bregmatic - AS the name and the aesthetic suggests, it's quite on homage to Nas and Illmatic.

He dropped a pretty popular underground song called

Blaze

Lluni is a monster on the mic, his lyricism and wordplay is oldschool as fuck and dope as hell.

he joined PINT last year and dropped a few songs since:

KING - you might recognize this beat also

Menime - Wow, what a song, the topics he touches on here are pretty deep.

These show that even though he is going commercial, he is still staying true to his style and will not let himself be consumed by the industry. Lluni Loves Hip Hop deeply, everything from the style and clothing, to rap. He is Hip Hop incarnate.

Many consider Lluni to be the next goat, and honestly if he keeps going like this, he will become THE GOAT. He is just soo incredibly good, he is in a good label that supports him and loves Hip Hop as much as he does. No doubt lluni will be the King soon.

Now let's get to PINT again.

See PINT had been working on a group project for a looooong time and they should have dropped it last year but they delayed it by around half a year or even more. I assume it was mostly due to Lluni joining the label and Kresha & Lyrical Son wanted him in the album , and booooy it paid off.

They finally released their looooong awaited album 3 weeks ago:

USA (United State of Albania)

Oh wow, this album is amazing to say the least. It's themes center mostly around Street life and crime, with punchlines and a pinch of romance here and there. And surprisingly a lot references to Wu Tang from everything up to Method Man's famous dead eye.

Standout tracks:

Semafori MC Kresha ft. Lyrical Son - Hoooooly shit, this has to be the best song here, and maybe one of the best songs ever in Albanian rap. Kresha comes in with an incredible loooong verse touching on a lot of different topics, and it's all finished with a beautiful hook and outro by Lyrical son.

28 Augusto MC Kresha ft Lyrical Son - FUNKY AF

Dope Man Semiautomvtic ft. Lluni - Fantastic song, this introduced Semiautomvtic to the scene, he is amazing too, does mostly trap. Lluni also has a fantastic verse here, paying respect to Wu tang.

Beirut MC Kresha, Lyrical Son, Semiautomvtic, Kreshnique, Ns - Fantastic posse cut, maybe the best in Albanian rap. A very dope gangsta song with an epic beat.

Filmi i Fundit MC Kresha ft Lyrical Son & Singullar - Amazing song showcasing the problem of crime with our youth nowadays detailed very beautifully by Kresha and Singullar with a Godly hook by Lyrical Son, seriously Lyrical Son is the God of hooks.

Jbmtqr Lluni ft Lyrical Son - Lovely song about hoes fucking it up with the right guy, Lluni amazing as always, Lyrical Son with the Godly hook and the beat, holy shit.

What is crazy that this album showed that as time went on, well into their 30s, MC Kresha & Lyrical Son just keep getting better and better, it's ridiculous.

This album ensured PINT's claim to the throne and it showed that even when Kresha and Lyrical Son go, their offspring like Lluni, Semiautomvtic and Blleki will still keep the crown for them.
