Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week #241: MIKE - WINTER NEW YORK

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

This week we'll be listening to WINTER NEW YORK by MIKE.

Background

Over the past few years, hip hop has been marked by the resurgence of a 'lo-fi' sound, often accompanied by rappers whose understated deliveries deal with topics such as depression and mental health. If you go prowling through the dark recesses of Bandcamp and especially Soundcloud you're bound to encounter an abundance of poorly formed bedroom whine sessions with Anime covers and titles 'l i k e t h i s'. As such it could be easy to dismiss MIKE from a distance. A teenager with an unnecessarily captialised rap name talking about his personal problems into a muddy mix.

But after a short while it becomes very apparent that MIKE belongs in his own category. With a voice eerily reminiscent of Mick Jenkins and a flow that pierces through the washed out soul samples he uses, MIKE practically spits out his words, there's an emphatic quality that few rappers possess. In the hands of a lesser rapper a lot his music could be called sleepy, but here the relaxed atmosphere is marked by an occasional sense of urgency.

As the title suggests New York is a prominent part of MIKE's music, but he's able to portray the most over represented city in hip hop in his own unique terms. This isn't the hellish landscape of Cannibal Ox or Mobb Deep, and it's not some hipster paradise either. MIKE exists perfectly in the middle between these 2 worlds. This is everyman rap, he's a product of the city, he's witness to the same New York grit we hear so much about in hip hop, but he lives more in his own head than in any simple image of New York.

MIKE himself describes the album as follows:

WINTER NEW YORK is a project which auras around the past couple years of my life. Its based on how the more physical things I became connected with, the less connection I had within myself and lost that voice in my head.

This loose, dreamy quality is present throughout, it really feels as if we're in the head of a young guy floating aimlessly between phases of his life, nostalgic for a time that he can't quite recall. That idea describes a lot of what MIKE represents. He's still very young, he still has his flaws, but he doesn't shy away from any of this and there's a subtle wisdom that hovers around his work. This isn't MIKE's first work, and it's not his best either, but this project is the point where he started evolving into one of the most unique, skilled, and genuinely insightful rappers of the last few years.

Disclaimer: If you like this, or if you want to like MIKE, I recommend giving a chance to May God Bless Your Hustle, Longest Day Shortest Night, or By the Water. Even if you aren't overly impressed by this, I urge you not to give up on MIKE yet.

Introduction: Hello r/hiphopheads, I will be running the best hook thread once a week every Sunday! This will be run very similarly to the Best Verse Threads we had a while ago, as you can see the format is almost identical to the old threads. All you have to do is just post your favorite Lil Wayne hook with a link to the hook. And if you want to, you can quote the hook word for word in your comment. The comment with the most upvotes will be deemed that artists best hook! And at the end of the year we will decide the best hook of the ones we collected! This is my first time doing anything like this so any recommendations to formatting, anything else helpful would be great!
