Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week #240: Vince Staples - Stolen Youth

Posted: 02 Mar 2018 03:44 AM PST

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

This week we'll be listening to Stolen Youth by Vince Staples.

Background

provided by u/droche25

Vince Staple's Stolen Youth is the third project released by Vince and his first and only full-length collaboration with Larry Fisherman A.K.A Mac Miller. These songs were recorded at Mac's house in L.A., and feature some quintessential L.A. artists of the 2010s, like ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Joey Fatts. Mac supplied the ominous beats for the project, and Vince raps likes "he's running out of hope…"

Vince Staples is known for being honest and keeping it "real". For me, this is his "realest" and best project in his discography. At 19 years old, Vince tackles heavy drug use, child abuse, and gun violence like he has experienced a lifetime of it. Vince said that this was his most difficult project to make, and I think that is a large reason why it sounds so different from any other project from Vince. He excels at explaining all the brutal situations he saw growing up in poverty, and at conveying the mindset of the crowd that is engaging in these activities. Vince raps like he needs to have revenge due to the world robbing him of his innocence. His delivery can sound nihilistic, but it seems more like Vince has been broken down from experiencing the trauma that comes from growing up in his neighborhood.

Now Vince has been able to keep spitting bars that reflect the realness of his hometown and the lifestyle of his friends and family. However, his beat selection over the following projects started to very more in style, sound, and even genre. This project has arguably the darkest feel of any Vince project due to Larry Fisherman's production. On 'Heaven', the instrumental that Mac laid down is very skeletal yet dark. On 'Back Sellin Crack', he supplies a beat that makes you want to grab the nearest gun and go fuck shit up. Also, props to Q for supplying a devastating guest verse on this track. Even something off the wall like the 'Stuck in My Way' instrumental, which seems slightly whimsical like a DOOM beat, matches perfectly with Vince's "don't give a fuck" delivery. I am a diehard No I.D. fan, but I think Mac has supplied Vince with his best beats thus far.

I wish this duo would go for one more round, even if they don't re-reflect on how Vince's youth was stolen. This was the project that got me into Vince Staples, like it probably was for many of you on hhh. If you haven't listened to this project before and like Vince, Mac or West Coast Hip Hop, listen to this. Even if you aren't a fan of either artist, this half an hour project is well worth your time. If you love this project, bump it one more time, and keep in mind that this project is almost 5 years old. What have you done with your life since June 2013? Feature in a Sprite Commercial?

[DISCUSSION] Can we talk about this blatant rape line on Young Dolph's new EP??

Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:14 PM PST

So if you don't know, now you know -- Almost two weeks ago, Young Dolph released his latest project, "N*****s Get Shot Everyday - EP". It had pretty underwhelming reception, most people in the reaction thread weren't feeling it. Personally, I thought it had the best production he's had thus far in his career, it sounded like time was actually spent crafting it.

On the track with what may be the best production on the album (Young Dolph - Slave Owner), he really makes the listener uncomfortable when he raps the lines:

Drop a pill in her drink like Bill (whoa)

Smash her on the first night, I bet I will (uh-huh)

You wanna get in this car, take off them heels (take them off)

................................

uhhmmmm

yikes

"Bill" obviously referring to Bill Cosby, who was accused (but not found guilty) of 60 counts of sexual assault. Despite not being found guilty this line seems to insinuate to be doing what Bill was alleged to have done.

Besides from the obvious, it's also kind of disturbing considering how carefully polished the project seemed to be. Comparing it with past work, the beats sound mastered and nothing sounds like just something he freestyled. Which means this was listened to a couple times and okayed the same number of times..

For more background, Dolph has always kind of had a little misogynistic vibe, more than your typical "I fucked your bitch" lines, I don't know how many times he's rhymed "bitch" with "bitch" as a rhyme scheme throughout a song, e.g. on Play Wit Yo Bitch

Still, this is excessively weird. I always ignored the other shit because, well, it's hip-hop. But this in particular, it's almost exactly like the line Rick Ross had on U.O.E.N.O (Remix), which was:

Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain't even know it

I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain't even know it

Similarities are uncanny. But one is held to a higher standard than the other

Discussion Quentions:

  • What do you think should be the repercussions for saying these kinds of lines? Though they may or may not have acted on these lines, is advocacy just as important to be critical of, especially in a post-#MeToo society?

  • Do you think Rick Ross' treatment was fair? Is it right to forgive him now?

  • Do you think getting shot at 101 times had an effect on Young Dolph's judgment? He has alleged to be a "dog" before, do you think 101 shots makes him a Dalmatian? Should I make this into a rap line to diss him with?

  • Should people organize to tweet him @ twitter like with Rick Ross?

VI Seconds - 3:30am

"Hate to Say" is produced by Play Picasso, Christian Lou, & BobbyMadeTheBeat

In the song Tory says:

On his last album, he was accused by listeners of jacking "The Art of Peer Pressure" on the 2nd part of "4AM Flex"

Also Fetty Wap on "To D.R.E.A.M."

In response to being told by listeners he sounds like Travis Scott on "Litty" he defended himself tweeting:

I can't sound like somebody I wrote for…

He wrote the hook on "Brand New Choppa". He later deleted the tweet

He was also accused of biting lines for a freestyle from Don Q and Cassidy. Video here. His response
