Recommended If You Like thread - February 06, 2021

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

R&B Artist Spotlight: Sampha

Music Style: Electronic R&B that is often piano based and incorporates elements of Neo Soul and Art Pop.

Some of you all may recognize UK singer-songwriter Sampha Lahai Sisay from his features on songs such as Too Much and The Motion (Drake's Nothing Was the Same), Saint Pablo (Kanye West's The Life of Pablo), Don't Touch My Hair (Solange's A Seat at the Table), and 4422 (Drake's More Life). He also did some background vocals on Beyonce's Mine. So, Sampha definitely has been around for awhile.

While Sampha's music falls under the Electronic R&B tag, there's something about his music that stands out among other artists under the Electro R&B tag. What stands out about his music is that it is often very piano based. It indicates that if you take away all the electronic elements from his music, Sampha would still have his piano. In fact, take a look at his performances of (No One Knows Me) Like the Piano and Drake's Controlla at BBC Radio 1. Those performances show that Sampha is a piano man at heart.

Even though a lot of his songs are piano based, they often contain other elements. Songs like Timmy's Prayer contains bagpipes, Kora Sings and What Shouldn't I Be have harps, Reverse Faults and Incomplete Kisses have electronic glitches, and some of his features such as Valentine (with Jessie Ware), Something Goes Right (with SBTRKT), Sanctuary (with SBTRKT and Jessie Ware), and Living Like I Do (with SBTRKT) are more dance-oriented and electronic based. Sampha's music even contains tribal elements (Without). However if you ask me, the songs where it's just him and a piano (Beneath the Tree, Under, Take Me Inside, (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano, and Blood on Me) will do something to you.

Another thing that makes Sampha stand out is his singing voice. His singing voice is pretty deep which is something that really isn't common in R&B music. So, hearing an R&B singer with a deep singing voice is always something interesting. Also, don't let Sampha's soft voice fool you. He has pipes which can be seen in Can't Get Close and (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano. What Sampha also brings to the table is that he takes a singer-songwriter approach to R&B which is also pretty uncommon. He is also very strong lyrically. His lyrics revolve around relationships and his family ( (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano is about his mother). His songs (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano, Take Me Inside, Plastic 100°C, and Timmy's Prayer showcases his lyrical ability.

Make sure you check out Sampha's projects Dual and Process.

Some of my favorite Sampha songs are Timmy's Prayer, Salient Sarah, Blood on Me, Something Goes Right, Sanctuary, Valentine, Reverse Faults, Living Like I Do, Kota Sings, (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano, Under, Incomplete Kisses, What Shouldn't I Be, Without.

Here are some good performances: Tiny Desk Concert, KEXP, Boiler Room DJ Set

[DISCUSSION] Future - Evol (5 years later)

Posted: 06 Feb 2021 02:49 AM PST

February 6th 2016 Future released his fourth studio album on Epic, Evol.

Debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200, the well-reviewed, gold-selling set was Future's third #1 album in just seven months! Shortly after its release, Future explained that the album's title was the word ''love'' spelled backwards. Just weeks before Evol, future released his Purple Reign mixtape.

Future co-executive proved the album alongside Metro Boomin. The only guest on the album is The Weekend on the multi-platinum single ''Low Life'', which released #18 on the Billboard hot 100.

Points for discussion:

  • Do you still bump this?
  • How do you rank it amongst Future's other projects?
  • Favourite bar, track, beat?

[DISCUSSION] Denzel Curry/Kenny Beats - UNLOCKED (1 Year Later)

Posted: 05 Feb 2021 08:12 PM PST

It's been 1 year since the collaborative album from Denzel Curry and Kenny Beats has released. What are your thoughts of the album? I think it's one of my favorite projects from Denzel, it's short and to the point, and filled with bangers. I'd love to hear everyone's opinion on this one.

[DISCUSSION] Young Thug - I’m Up (5 Years Later)

Posted: 05 Feb 2021 10:05 AM PST

I'm Up is a mixtape by American rapper Young Thug.[13] It was released on February 5, 2016, by 300 Entertainment and Atlantic Records. The mixtape features guest appearances from Trouble, Ralo, Lil Durk, Lil Duke, Solo Lucci, Young Butta, Quavo, Offset, Dora and Dolly (Young Thug's sisters).

P4K review

I'm Up doesn't muster up the highs of the Slime Season series—the infectiousness of "Best Friend," the sublime structuring of "Draw Down," or the woozy euphoria of "Raw"—but Thug manages to compile many of his best attributes into a tightly-wound 38 minutes.

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Pooh Shiesty - Shiesty Season

Posted: 05 Feb 2021 03:04 PM PST

Gucci Mane signee Pooh Shiesty drops his debut album.

RYM Review:

The Memphis up-&-comer delivers a decent full-length debut

Pooh Shiesty is a 21 year old rapper from Memphis, Tennessee who broke out just last year off his viral single "Main Slime". This resulted in Gucci Mane signing him to his Atlantic Records imprint 1017 Worldwide & after multiple appearances on the label's recent showcase compilations, he's now being granted a full-length debut.

The intro talks about seeing through fake shit over an icy trap beat whereas the next song "Back in Blood" with Lil Durk finds the 2 talking about murder over an instrumental with some foreboding piano melodies. The track "Guard Up" talks about fucking up anyone in his way over an acoustic guitar along with some rubbery bass while the song "Ugly" with Gucci Mane sees the duo talking about how everyone with them is thuggin' over a trap beat with some distressing keyboards.

The track "Neighbors" with Big30 finds the 2 talking about being real g's over a wintry instrumental while the song "50 Shots" talks about getting it in at the trap over an elegiac beat. The track "No Chorus" talks about death over a pessimistic instrumental while the song "Box of Churches" with 21 Savage sees the duo talking about bringing the smoke to 'em over a spectral beat.

The track "Making a Mess" with Big30 & Veeze finds the trio talking about romance & guns over a bassy instrumental with this horn section occasionally popping in & out while the song "Choppa Way" talks about staying the same despite being rich now over an ominous beat. The track "Take a Life" with Foogiano sees the 2 talking about how people don't know what it's like to kill someone over an instrumental with a prominent woodwind sample while the song "Gone MIA" talks about all the pussies out there over a triumphant beat.

The track "Big 13 Gang" with Choppa Wop & Lil Hank finds the 3 talking about being a threat over a cinematic instrumental while the song "Drop Some Shit" talks about trying to make it out before he gets locked up over a cloudy beat. The track "See Red" talks about blood being around him over a trap/rock fusion while the song "Master P" compares himself to the No Limit mogul of the same name over a heady beat from Tay Keith. The album ends with the strip club anthem "Twerksum", which originally appeared on the So Icy Gang compilation back in October.

Of all the recent 1017 signings, Pooh Shiesty has stood out to me the most. However, this album is just decent at best. He has a great presence on the mic & his songwriting is definitely ear-grabbing, but the production is just middle of the road & most of the features kinda weigh it down.

R&B Artist Spotlight: Kelela

Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:14 AM PST

Spotify
Instagram
Youtube Channel

Music Style: Electronic Alternative R&B that incorporates electronic music from the UK.

Kelela Mizanekristos is someone who takes Electronic R&B to a whole new level. She takes R&B and combines it with UK electronics and the final product is amazing. Before we get to that, let's first talk a little bit about Kelela. She's a second generation Ethiopian-American who's always felt a connection to her African heritage. It's very present in her music and image because both incorporate a lot of Afrofuturism. This can be seen her in music videos for LMK and Rewind.

At a surface level, Kelela's music could seem as just simply Electro-R&B, but it's way much more than that. Her music invokes a sensual feeling by using a combination of Electronic music and R&B. She can channel atmospheric (Floor Show, Gomenasai, Cherry Coffee), bass heavy (Send Me Out, All The Way Down), and glitchy sounds (Cut 4 Me, Guns & Synths) that will make you notice something new anytime you listen to her music. Kelela also tends to use unconventional sounds in her music. It consists of everything from the sound of a soda can opening (LMK), ice being dropped in an empty glass cup (Keep it Cool), or a glass bottle breaking (Enemy). She also shows that she can work with darker sounds (A Message) while still keeping the same flair. Another notable trait in her music is that she incorporates tempo and sounds changes within her songs like in Better (ambient sound to distorted reverbed electronic sound), Take Me Apart (starts minimalist then turns to repeated sub-basses after a bass drop), and Frontline (minimalist to slight bass sound with 808s).

As for lyrics, Kelela's music deals with the various stages of a relationship. From anything to meeting someone new, breaking up with them, or just wanting a simple booty call. While this topic is nothing particularly new for artists, what makes a good writer is not what they write about, it's how they write about it. Kelela's writing is very direct and straight to the point. She's not making you jump through hoops to understand her, she lets you know what she expects from day 1 and makes no apologies for it. One interesting aspect of Kelela's writing is her one-liners. Her one-liners often stand out the most in her lyrics. Lines like "I need someone who knows. Someone who gives a fuck", "Silly s*it we go through. I cop my keys and I'm out", "Probably you've had the same damn thing at the same damn time", and "Afraid of falling knowing that I could never live without" from Enemy, Blue Light, Enough, and Take Me Apart showcase this.

One more thing to talk about Kelela is her singing voice. Now her voice may not be as super powerful and fuller compared to other R&B singers, but having a big voice isn't everything. One thing Kelela has is control and the understanding of her voice, both which are some of the most important skills to have as a singer. If you don't believe me, check out this little video here. It's not only that, Kelela has a great range as well. She can even sing whistle notes, like in LMK and Gomenasai.

If your interesting in the more UK Electronic music side, check out Cut 4 Me.If you want more sensual Electronic Alternative R&B, listen to Hallucinogen. For sensual Electronic Alternative R&B and incorporating more of that UK electronic sound, listen to Take Me Apart.

Some of my favorite Kelela songs are LMK, Enemy, Take Me Apart, Rewind, Better, Truth or Dare, Keep it Cool, Blue Light, A Message, Enough, Cut 4 Me, Floor Show, Turn to Dust, Jupiter, Waitin, and All The Way Down.

Here are some good performances: Radio 1's Piano Sessions, Pitchfork Music Festival 2014, UO Live

[DISCUSSION] Denzel Curry - 13LOOD 1N + 13LOOD OUT (One Year Later)

Posted: 04 Feb 2021 11:41 AM PST

RYM Review:

This is probably my favorite EP of all time. It sounds almost like drafts from ZUU, but in a way I think these songs are an even better homage to the sound Denzel started with back in Florida than ZUU's songs were. The mixing is intentionally wonky and I think that also serves to further the gritty aesthetic really well. The features do not take away from the quality at all, and I think they fit perfectly with the beats and with Denzel. The songs kind of melt into each other in a really satisfying way, and I will forever be impressed by how smooth it is because that kind of thing is something I've always wanted to do but haven't tried yet. I don't think there's a single thing wrong with this EP, aside from the fact that I still can't really get over Ghostemane's insane trademark flow.
