Concert Review: Smino’s Swanita Tour proves he’s a star in the making

Posted: 04 Jun 2017 02:19 PM PDT

Concert Info:

Artist: Smino

Tour: Zero Fatigue presents The Swanita Tour

Opening acts: Bari, Jay2, Jean Deaux

Venue: Peter's Room at The Roseland Theater, Portland, OR

Date: May 22nd, 2016

Price: $12 ($16 after online fee)

Review:

Smino's blkswn has been among my favorite hip hop projects of the year so far, a debut album that surprisingly managed to carry the energy and unique sound of its promising singles across the entire project. When I saw Smino was headlining his own tour that would be stopping in Portland, my appreciation of blkswn alone prompted me to decide to go. I was interested in seeing how the music would translate to a live performance, plus the tickets were about as cheap as they come.

Peter's Room is a pretty small venue - capacity of 500 I believe - located on the lower level of the Roseland theater. Lined with old photos and posters from rock and R&B concerts of decades past, a 21+ bar area towards the rear of the room, and a very small stage that only takes up about two-thirds the width of the room, it's an adequate venue for an up-&-coming act looking for a place to play to their growing fan base.

I was very excited to find out upon arrival that Smino was performing with a full band. A drumset and keyboard sat to the right side of the stage, opposite a dual-Macbook DJ table, with room for Smino himself in the center. A bassist, guitarist and two backup singers would later take the stage with him. I admittedly haven't been to any other hip hop concerts of this size (sadly missed both Noname and Saba earlier this year), but it seemed to me like a pretty ambitious setup for a tour this small.

After spending about 20 minutes sitting in the bar area - not drinking but rather for a place to sit down - I made my way toward the stage so I'd have decent spot for the show. Eventually, with a decent portion of the crowd still arriving, Bari sauntered onto the stage very low-key like a rap-game Hannibal Buress, wearing a white tee, shiny sweatpants and metal-rimmed aviator glasses. I wasn't really familiar with Bari's music prior, but his set was enjoyable and showed promise. His delivery and lyricism were both solid, and he worked the stage well with a slightly aloof swagger, towel in one hand and mic held nearly upside-down in the other. The most distinctive quality of his performance was his voice, strong and somewhat deep. On a few occasions a word or line would escalate into something just beyond a shout, almost crying out, and here I saw a vocal quality beginning to peak out that could eventually serve to set him apart. "Talisman" is a nice song to start with if you're looking to get into his music.

Next up was Jay2, quite the opposite of Bari, styled in a jersey, athletic shorts and a black pair of Air Maxes. Jay2 performs with a much quicker, technical flow, and a steady stream of energy. For whatever reason, there were couple songs in his set that he performed his verses along a backing track, which didn't work that well with his style, but there were a multiple other songs I found myself really vibing to despite never hearing them before. A yet-to-be-released track that references Tarantino was a favorite of mine, as well as "Better Serve", both of which show significant potential. Both Bari and Jay2 noted some of their songs were produced by Monte Booker (who produced nearly all of blkswn), and his production did serve them well. Both their sets were promising, they showed genuinely good rapping ability, and I could see them both truly growing into their own in the very near future.

Jay2 and Bari both performed with the DJ only, but Jean Deaux (a bit better known, having collaborated with the likes of Mick Jenkins and Isaiah Rashad) was additionally accompanied by live guitar and bass. I was very impressed by Jean - she has a nicely developing stage presence and particularly strong vocals at times, weaving into a variety of flows (basically rapping on a few songs) and generally using her voice in creative ways. Her songs "Wikipedia" and "Circles" made for particularly great live performances. I can't find either online so I think those were both new, unreleased tracks, which leaves me quite excited for her upcoming music. (Side note: the bassist accompanying Jean Deaux was Phoelix - who has prominently produced and provided vocals on both Noname's Telefone and Saba's Bucket List Project. I think he has a solo project coming later this year.)

The time then came for Smino's set. Phoelix moved to the keyboard and a drummer, bassist and two backup singers joined the band. Monte Booker finally appeared at the DJ table, where he spent the entirety of Smino's set with a towel on his head, inconspicuously working the equipment. Smino finally appeared - on crutches - hobbling up the stairs on the side of the stage, sporting an Oregon Ducks shirt and camo pants. His apparent injury did not hamper the performance though, as the crutches disappeared quickly and he immediately set to getting the crowd hyped. Smino has an excellent stage presence which was recognizable from the very start. Though he spent much of the show balanced on one leg at the center of the stage, he burst with enthusiasm and charisma the whole time.

Somehow, some of the already fantastic songs sounded better live (something not too common among rap performances). And I don't mean the concert was a more exciting, fun environment to hear the songs in - though it certainly was. Rather, the full strength and versatility of Smino's voice becomes fully apparent during the live set. Apart from Kendrick (and Young Thug, though I don't think what he does is as comparable), I genuinely don't think there's anyone in hip hop right now who has vocals as dynamic as Smino. One of the impressive features of blkswn is the way he stretches his voice between a variety of flows and tones with ease, all of which he replicates in the live environment. And damn, he can genuinely sing too. He belted out the opening of "Spitshine" (a brief part of which I captured on snapchat - see below) with a soulful power to his singing voice that I don't think has really been captured in full on any of his studio recordings yet.

Monte Booker's distinctive production for the project was translated to the live format magnificently, reworking the instrumentals to the strengths of the live instruments while keeping the songs recognizable. The band was fantastic and energetic, the drummer in particular just tearing it up at times.

Ultimately, I found my mind settling on one thought over and over as the performance went on: SMINO IS THE REAL DEAL.

He performed with not just hype energy but genuinely commanded the stage with style and professionalism, an entertainer who cares about the experience for his fans. The entire production felt quite polished for a first headlining tour of this size, which really speaks to Smino's ambition. In an interview from 2016, when asked if he cared about making radio records, Smino said he didn't make music specifically for the radio, but would "like to be known as an artist who redefined radio." He and Booker are both clearly very talented, and I think they're really onto something here. In the last year I've been very excited by numerous artists emerging from the Chicago scene such as Saba and Noname, but between blkswn and this live performance, it's Smino who seems the most ready to be a star.

Some time during the night, Smino promised that every time he tours he'll be sure to come back to Portland. And after the show he put on last night, I'll be sure to be there every time.

A lot of data was impossible for me to find here. If I had to guess, Vanilla Ice's "To The Extreme" is number two. Cypress Hill's "Cypress Hill", 2Pac's "2Pacalypse Now", Ice Cube's "Death Certificate", and Naughty by Nature's "Naughty by Nature" probably round out the rest of the top 5.

1992 - N.W.A succeeds as solo acts

Couldn't find much data for 92. I'm going to guess that Dr. Dre's "The Chronic", Beastie Boys' "Check Your Head", Eazy-E's "5150: Home 4 tha Sick", MC Ren's "Kizz My Black Azz", and Ice Cube's "The Predator" (193K) round out the top 5.

Getting real about Homophobia in Rap

Posted: 03 Jun 2017 02:16 PM PDT

Let me preface this by saying I'm not gay or black. Today Bill Maher received a shit ton of backlash for his use of the word nigga and one of the most outspoken against him is Chance with this tweet

Now I believe Bill made a trash joke and deserves the backlash he is receiving because I don't believe the word nigga or nigger should be joked about especially when the joke is based around slavery. But to me I see such a double standard with Chance calling for the removal of his show when he himself has made homophobic remarks before even made somewhat of a joke on 'Favorite Song'.

So here's my question, if he can make a joke about slapping gays why can't a white, hispanic, or even asian person say 'Nigger' in even a discussion about the word? Are we okay with Ricky saying it in this context obviously I could see people getting offended by Louis' comments.

EDIT- Okay I really thought this would be downvoted to hell for trying to force some 'political correct agenda' when it's obviously not. I just want to know why we're okay with people being homophobic in 2017. I used chance as the main example because he is essentially raps 'good kid'. Someone pointed out Migos and yes I would agree their comments on Makkonen were uncalled for and I honestly think this has to do with how they were raised and their religious beliefs. I don't think that should be used as an excuse though because its still incredibly shitty.

https://youtu.be/IP0LaTyKE-M

Well, there were a lot of bad lines in this one, so why not make a video of all of them?

Some of these lyrics are funny, but some are plain stupid.

He mentions a "buttered bitch" in one of his lyrics, I did my research and couldn't figure out what it was, someone please try to give me an answer for that one.

He says in a line "Ain't gay but I love Ben Franklins" which is extremely contradictory to the concept of the album of being yourself, like, he even put a gay couple on the album cover. That's like saying "no homo" at a LGBT convention

and the rest of it is lazy songwriting, awful attempts at romantic lines that are so bad they're hilarious (You can't take him being romantic seriously with that autotune). Shit about incest (4 lines involving fucking a family member). Awful lines about pussy. Oh, and let's not even get into the cello line.

Yeah, it was a lot of fun...

Not.

Leanings of this hub for black culture 'appreciation'

Posted: 03 Jun 2017 11:04 PM PDT

Had a look at that post about homophobia in rap and was once again reminded how not black this sub, and how people here are 'appreciating' the black culture surrounding hip hop but then somehow seeming to disagree with most black people on many topics surrounding social issues. White privilege, saying the 'n' word, systemic racism etc.

It seemed the general consensus on that post was that if you're not a racist, then it's okay to say 'nigger' or 'nigga', and that this culture of calling out every white person for saying 'nigger' is tiring. What they seem to forget is that coming from a black person it is a term of endearment and reminds them of where they came from and what society they live in, where systemic racism is still rampant and egalitarianism is something that's nowhere near to being achieved. Coming from a white person in the suburbs, it is ignorance. You can say it. Your mouth can make those sounds. What they're asking for is for nobody to criticize them for saying that, and that's just not a thing.

I'm all for removing the word from our vocabulary if that's what black people decide to do. What I don't want is a forced removal through fines and corporate backlash because it makes people feel uncomfortable - then it becomes another tool of oppression. It is a reversal of a more hideous term flipped to now represent a certain level of endearment and comraderie between us. In many ways it can be seen as testament to the resilience of the black American. They gave us left over animal parts and we made soul food restaurants, they gave us ghettos and we made popular culture. The word is as close as we get to a common reminder of where we came from and who we are. While I understand that some black people feel uneasy about their slave heritage I was raised to wear mine as a badge of honor and pride.

Members of dominant groups tend to make a big deal over small things that they are excluded from. They want to say it too. They see it as a "freedom" that black people "enjoy" that they can't. As if they don't enjoy enough "freedoms." It's coming from a place of entitlement when people say that. They see themselves as being denied something and they think it's not fair, therefore they're being oppressed in some twisted alternate universe kind of way.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with the use of the n-word (no matter the race) it is a part of black culture - if you are not of this community the usage is considered offensive by a large majority of the people, it is what it is on that. You do not get to decide if your usage of a word hurts someone.

Apart from that, I also see people denying white privilege constantly. I literally just had a conversation with a prominent poster on here denying it, sarcastically saying shit along the lines 'sorry for being white they shove money in our faces when we're born'. It's crazy that a lot of these rappers you listen to and black people from the culture that surrounds it will agree that white privilege exists, and yet so many people on this sub will say otherwise. 'White people are born into poverty too.' It's something along the lines of 'I don't agree with this and deny its existence because it's not what I've experienced'.

I also see complaints about black people being just as racist if not more racist than white people, and this racism being just as damaging. The thing is what people generally mean by racism is defined by their experience. Racism to them is essentially mean comments or jokes based on race. 'They ostracized me or excluded from the circle because I'm white'. And sure, that's mean and nasty and bad spirited. It sucks to be called names or miss out on friends because somebody was racist in that way.

What black people call racism is the school system excluding our kids, lowering their expectations and fueling the class to prison pipeline. It's police deliberately targeting black areas when whites and blacks commit crimes at the same rate. Then pushing charges further on black people. Then judges handing down harder sentences because voters want that and vote for that and so on. It's society policing our hair and employers not wanting to hire when they see our names or banks refusing business loans when they're in better shape than white people who are approved. It's redlining and systematic ghettos to curb black social mobility, it's police brutality, police murders and injustice, media propaganda that continually dehumanizes and insults and drives white anger and fear for political ends... and the legacies of the past nobody likes to discuss. That is racism to black people.

So yeah a mean name is kinda bad and FYI we get those names a fuckload worse anyway, but cry me a damn river. There's racism and racism, you feel me?

Also worth nothing that homophobia is a common problem in areas of poverty and in sects of Christianity. Decades of concerted efforts of disenfranchisement, aggressive policing, economic abandonment, bulldozing communities, under-funding, school under-funding and even gentrification as a cure have created ghettos and 30% of black people today being born into poverty.

[Discussion] Eazy E questions and stories

Posted: 03 Jun 2017 09:26 PM PDT

Hello, this is my first time posting on this subreddit. To begin my post, I had always been fascinated by Eazy E life way before the movie Straight outta Compton. However, I have a few questions if you guys don't mind answering. And stories about Eazy E before he formed N.W.A. or meeting Eazy in real life.

1.) Was Eazy E a official Crip or was he just affiliated with the Crips? (I'm constantly getting different answers about Eazy being a gangmember when he was alive)

2.) Did Eazy E really killed anybody? (On the Howard Stern show, Eazy claimed he killed 7 people)

3.) Is it true Eazy E knew he had Aids and he promise to spread the disease? (DJ Quik said this in a old interview, just wondering if it's true)

Any stories about Eazy E past life or meeting Eazy E would be much appreciated. I love doing research on history events or mysterious people, so forgive me if I come off as a fanboy.

Sorry the grammar mistakes. :)

Am I the only one who slept on Bucket List Project?

Posted: 03 Jun 2017 10:43 PM PDT

I've heard a couple verses from Saba over the years but never checked out a full project, until today....And I'm absolutely floored by how solid this record is. His writing is clever and his stories are deep and critical honeslty. I continue to be astonished at the amount of young talented artists coming out of Chicago.
