[Discussion] Joey Badass - All-Amerikkkan Badass (5 years later) Posted: 07 Apr 2022 06:28 AM PDT Five years ago today, at a point in his career where he could have gone in a lot of different directions, Joey dropped AABA, one of the most politically-charged albums of the 2010s. For me, this album has held up well and I think it's possibly Joey's best project overall, and shows a new level of versatility that people didn't really expect at the time. His lyrics are (purposely) toned down in terms of complexity from past projects, but his songwriting is a lot better imo, and it makes for a more accessible, still conscious type of lyricism that's in the same lane as guys like Common, A Tribe Called Quest, etc. Some people criticized the album when it first came out for being a little "surface level" in its insights, but I think that's made up for by how musically strong and emotionally resonant it is, which really should be the point when making this kind of music anyway. Temptation and For My People are just super anthemic and empowering and optimistic, and I think that's what Joey was going for. Amerikkkan Idol is just written/performed with so much conviction and boldness and skill, I think Joey deserves credit for being willing to lay it all out there like that in the way that he did, and his performance on the track is strong, especially the spoken word verse. The back half of the album is loaded with great traditional rap tracks too. Babylon is maybe the most powerful song on the tracklist. And even Devastated has aged well for me. As the state of popular rap songs becomes more and more meme-centric, I think the song actually holds up pretty well as a poppy rap song done right and with a good, positive message. How does that hold up for everyone 5 years later? What tracks have stuck around for people in their rotation? Where does this rank in Joey's discography? And overall, how do you think the decision to go in this direction, as opposed to either completely staying in his lane from B4.DA.$$, or just flat out making an album chasing hits with more songs like Devastated, has effected Joey's career?
