Recommended If You Like thread - March 20, 2021 Posted: 20 Mar 2021 08:00 AM PDT If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want. Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z. You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z. Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats" Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question. The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music. [link] [comments] |

[DISCUSSION] Childish Gambino - EP (10 Years Later) Posted: 20 Mar 2021 09:27 AM PDT "Yeah, I dropped the free EP for these other kids to feel a lot / Niggas keep asking on whether this dude's for real or not" EP dropped on March 8, 2011, and spawned one of Gambino's first successful singles "Freaks & Geeks." To date, the song's music video (Gambino's first) has over 26 million YouTube views, and the track has racked up more than one million Genius pageviews, too. "Freaks and Geeks" helped define Gambino's punchline-fueled early rap style [link] [comments] |

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Kota The Friend & Statik Selektah - To Kill A Sunrise Posted: 20 Mar 2021 09:14 AM PDT What did people think? I love it. Didn't know who Kota The Friend was before late last summer but his music is so good to vibe to, he's become one of my favorites. This is probably his best-produced project. No surprise since Statik is a legend, but they're a really good pairing. Perfect sunny Saturday afternoon album. This reminds me a little of the Gran Turismo tape Statik did with Curren$y a couple years ago. Standout tracks: All of them, but especially Hate, The Love, Sunrise and Sunset [link] [comments] |

[DISCUSSION] Zebra Katz - LESS IS MOOR (One Year Later) Posted: 20 Mar 2021 09:22 AM PDT Inspired by James Baldwin, Grace Jones, Nina Simone, and Little Richard, Zebra Katz's 2020 debut album, Less is Moor - pays homage to the minimalistic approach often demanded from artists of color. Morgan clarifies this by saying that non white people are commonly expected to be more resourceful than their white counterparts. With elements of hip-hop, drum 'n' bass, and electronic music, Less is Moor is said to channel Katz's caustic lyricism into its biting rhythms. The basis for the Less is Moor album started while Morgan was studying at the New School's Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. His senior thesis project, "Moor Contradictions," was a performance featuring monologues and raps, including "Ima Read," from different personas created by Morgan. Among these characters is Zebra Katz, who Morgan says, was formed as a result of his thesis on identity obsession. Since then, Morgan has been fighting against the various boxes and typecasts created by those around him. [link] [comments] |
