[DISCUSSION] Bas - Too High to Riot (5 Years Later)

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 05:30 PM PST

Too High to Riot is the second studio album by Sudanese rapper Bas. It was released on March 4, 2016, by Dreamville Records and Interscope Records. The album sold 8,065 copies in its first week, debuting at number 49 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Top Comments in Release Thread

Well. I no longer need to be hunting for new music for awhile now...

I love Bas' beat selection; dude has an ear for different, refreshing beats. Then he uses some crazy flows to coincide. The progression is clearly noticeable from Last Winter to this album.

Dis tew much

What an album. Just gave it a full listen and even if Kendrick gets the headlines for today, this is still so solid. FiendBas baby

Top Comments in Discussion thread

This is the first Bas album I've listened too and after this I'm very inclined to go check out his last album too. From what I had heard of him before this, I was impressed but this was really good. Favorite track right now is Methylone, and Night Job is great. Really digging this and I hope people take the time to listen to it even though cornrow Kenny came through last night.

I've been fuckin with Bas for awhile but this album solidifies him as one of my favorite rappers. This project is just so clean and smooth throughout. I really feel like it has a very timeless sound, as in it's got a lot of re-playability. No gimmicks or super trendy sounds, just good smooth hip hop.

I don't want to sound like the typical fambruh with the hot take overreaction but I really think this is the kind of album that could get overlooked by mainstream hip hop listeners right now but some years from now looked and respected as a very good record.

I don't know, maybe I'm just stanning this shit super hard. But I REALLY fux with this

Honestly man, I think the production on this shit was fucking awesome. I love Miles and Miles.

Night Job has been one of my favorite songs for a while now, after giving this a listen it was pretty solid all the way through. Bas can flow pretty nice.

Dude said "until your nation apologize, im fuckin European bitches for every African nation that they colonize." Shit had my hype when I first heard it. That's fire.

This album was good. Bas is so smooth. His sound is unique. Ive listened to the album 4 or 5 times through. And it gets better with every listen.

[DISCUSSION] Death Grips - Death Grips EP (10 Years Later)

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 12:05 PM PST

Death Grips is the eponymous debut extended play by experimental hip hop group Death Grips. It was released as a free download on March 8, 2011 through the band's website. The EP was released directly from the group as a ZIP file with no track listing.

Background

After forming on December 21, 2010, in Sacramento, California, Death Grips recorded their first track, "Full Moon (Death Classic)". On March 8, 2011, Death Grips released the song, along with a video and a free self-titled EP. The EP consists of 6 tracks, several of which were later renamed and released on their debut mixtape, Exmilitary.

Following the release of Exmilitary on April 25, 2011, the EP was removed from the band's website. However, "Full Moon (Death Classic)" and "Face Melter (How To Do Impossible Things)" remained available for free for a short time. On April 27, 2011, "Full Moon (Death Classic)" was released as the band's debut single through iTunes.

RYM Review

Even in their infancy, Death Grips knows exactly what they want to be. I originally didn't want to deep dive into this EP because Death Grips actually deleted it when they released Exmilitary, but I realized that was the wrong call to make since it's still readily available on YouTube to listen to, as what goes on the Internet stays there. The EP itself is a pretty fun taster to what Death Grips is capable of. It has a loud, brash sound that does not compromise. Despite one song, this EP is a wholly entertaining experience. These guys were hell bent on making a name for themselves early! At its worst, the EP is a little cheesy, but at its best, it has some of my new favourite Death Grips songs.

The production is pretty good for a group trying to assert themselves into the experimental hip hop game. Of course, it's noisy, but the songs don't bombard you with it, unless they want to. MC Ride's vocals are almost always on top of the mix, which is nice. Every element of this album is given something to do, even though there are few elements to work with outside of vocals, drums, keyboards and the rest of the beat with its samples. To their credit, they do a lot with those elements. They range from crisp to noisy to a mixture of both everywhere on this tape, which I really like. I love the raw aesthetic of this record, which adds to the aggressive vibe. I wish the sound play were a little more present, but it is still an interesting project from a production standpoint.

Death Grips already assert themselves as masters of making fun yet interesting songs from a compositional standpoint. Of course, Zach Hill's drumming fits the mood of each song, from the erratic power of Full Moon (Death Classic) and Death Grips (Next Grips) to the accessibility of a party anthem like Where's It At (Death Heated). The purring bass on Takyon (Death Yon) is a highlight on the whole record. The samples are the true key to Death Grips' success, as they will go on to be on future releases. The sampled keyboard line in the chorus of Known For It (Freak Grips) is amazing. The flow is non-existent, but that's kind of by design because the tracks are in no particular order! This is a very interesting idea, and it shows that this EP focuses entirely on its songs as opposed to how they work together. It makes this album a little more kaleidoscopic than what I'm used to and I kind of like that.

The lyrics on this EP are fun, which further cements Death Grips as a group to watch. MC Ride's delivery is always big and at their best, absolutely manic. Since it's Death Grips, notably one of the least cliché groups in rap music today, the cliché moments are really noticeable. The song, Death Grips (Next Grips) is an introduction to a group that really needs no ham-fisted introduction. It's a braggadocious song that every rapper and their mother has done at some point, and compared to the rest of the tracks that show you how unique and pulse-pounding Death Grips are, it kind of falls flat. The rest of these tracks are much better lyrically, painting the picture of the vices in our society, as well as how Death Grips is a unique band that's here to melt faces and take names. Not much narrative cohesion, but this EP doesn't need it, as it is a taster of Death Grips' style.

The first Death Grips EP that may not even exist in the eyes of Death Grips is fun to listen to. It's a solid, bite sized introduction to the punch in the face that is the music of this group. The production is solid and its strength is in the raw, aggressive style that complements what the beat is doing. The composition is fun as well. It doesn't bombard you with noise in every second of its runtime, so when it does get noisy, the shock is still fresh. There is also the party song in Where's It At (Death Heated) which I feel is one of Death Grips' more accessible tracks. While there is no connective tissue on the record, as the songs are in whatever order you feel like they should be in, this EP doesn't really need it, because the songs are pretty strong. Lyrically, the EP is fun, but is not afraid to say something once in a while. Except for one dud, Death Grips made a great EP and a great start for a group whose name would go on to live in infamy.

[DISCUSSION] R.A.P. Ferreira - Purple Moonlight Pages (One Year Later)

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:36 AM PST

Release thread

I've loved Scallops Hotel/Milo/R.A.P Ferreira for a while, so I'm biased, but I like this release a lot. His use of more traditional instruments really works with his spoken word and philosophical style. I'll be listening to this as much as if not more than his other stuff.

Edit: Production is great for Rory's stuff too.

I love this. I've never dug into Milo or Scallops enough before and this album just blew me away. This really brings me back to some of the stuff I was super into over a decade ago. The spoken word intro really set the tone of the whole piece. I adore the production on this. It really aides the abstract nature of the lyrics. Jazzy and esoteric, I can't express how much I dig it. The vibe reminds me of aspects of Typical Cats or some Dynospectrum, Eyedea or Saul Williams maybe. I dunno, it's really stirring up a lot of this particular vibe I love and what I love about hip hop. This is super good and glad you put it out there. Thanks, imma decipher this for a while.

Been waiting for this! Milo over Kenny Segal production is perfect. Ruby Yacht forever.

So far this is the best produced hip hop album of 2020. It's so crisp.

I keep coming back to NONCIPHER. It fucking goes.

Can't wait to kick it with him and see this performed live. One of the chillest, coolest artists. If you like outlandish shows I highly recommended seeing him live.

Fantano thread

Is it weird that I enjoy this more than his stuff as Milo? I mean, So The Flies Don't Come is cool, but some of his mannerisms and personality qualms under that moniker didn't really do much for me, and even though I usually like really wordy rappers that make you listen a few more times to really get the gist of what they're saying, sometimes Milo's wordiness felt a bit, I guess, directionless. At least to me. But this album feels like its abstract nature is more from just speaking from the heart I guess. It just really adds to the personal themes of the record. It's like he's rapping in a more, say, liberated way where he's just letting the stories and the thoughts flow freely. I dunno, it might be that I didn't really understand Milo properly in the past whereas this album clicked more easily, but yeah I'm really digging this album, and hopefully more people check it out now that Fantano gave it a positive review

I'm so glad he gave this a good review, but I noticed he kept referring to him as Milo, completely disregarding his name change. That being said, I love Rory's new direction, even though I never had a problem with his sleepy, lo-fi repetitive style like a lot of people on this sub. I would never have expected him to be rapping over these kind of instrumentals and I hope this new version of him gives him a lot more recognition.

I think out of nowhere he might have surpassed all his previous work. Really beautiful album that feels like the perfect essence of everything he's shown before. Struggling to find a single thing wrong with it. Before So the Files Don't Come he could be a bit too moany and insecure, lots of "look I know philosophy" posturing. Then from around Who Told You to Think onwards he was a lot more polished and sure of himself, but occasionally came off too brash and distant. This is just the richest and most inviting his lyiricsm has ever been.
