Rules

Artists qualify if they're never gotten 50 or more upvotes on /r/HipHopHeads (counting features)

Formatting:

>Artist - Title

>Description: no character minimum but some things that might be good to include: where the rapper is from, what subgenres they might fall into, have cosigns they might have, what their influences are, who they sound like.

Example:

>Aaron May - Let Go

>18 year old Houston Rapper, biggest influences are J Cole and Nas.

Heavily recommended: If you post a song, listen to another song and comment on it. Otherwise this thing doesn't really work that well.

Feel free to add any feedback on what could make these threads better.

[DISCUSSION} 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne - ColleGrove (5 Years Later)

Posted: 09 Mar 2021 04:31 PM PST

ColleGrove is the third studio album by American hip hop recording artist 2 Chainz. It was released on March 4, 2016, by Def Jam Recordings. The album was originally a collaborative effort between 2 Chainz and fellow American rapper Lil Wayne, but due to his record label issues, only 2 Chainz was credited as the primary artist.

The album includes production from several high-profile record producers; such as Southside, Mike Will Made It, TM88, Infamous, Zaytoven, Lil' C, Metro Boomin, Ben Billions and London on da Track, among others. ColleGrove received generally positive reviews from critics and it debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart. A sequel, ColleGrove 2 is set for release in 2021.

Background

ColleGrove was initially a duet album between Southern hip hop recording artists 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne, however, because of Wayne's label issues, which had prevented him from releasing collaborative efforts in the past, such as I Can't Feel My Face with Juelz Santana, Best of Young Worlds with Lloyd, He Rap, He Sing with T-Pain and more, this album does not credit Wayne as a primary artist. Although it could not be released in conjunction with their respective record labels, 2 Chainz took it upon himself to release the album as his latest solo project through Def Jam Recordings. Instead, Wayne appeared as a "featured artist", courtesy of Cash Money Records, which meant that the project would not count towards Wayne's contractual obligation with Cash Money Records. 2 Chainz would later refer to this album in several interviews as a "tribute" to Lil Wayne.

The album's title is a portmanteau of 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne's respective hometowns. 2 Chainz is from College Park, Georgia, while Wayne hails from Hollygrove, a neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana. On December 28, 2015, in an interview with Forbes, 2 Chainz spoke on album, saying "As far as the ColleGrove project, I really feel like the music is tight and accessible. Wayne has always been one of my favorite rappers. We're just doing some mixing and trying to grind up. Just know that ColleGrove is coming very soon, and it's going to be filled with entertainment bars, great sounds, great vibes."

Top Comments in Release Thread

It's listed as 2 Chainz and only Def Jam, not Cash Money. Wayne is listed as a feature artist on each song. Looks like Wayne is still having trouble getting clearance from Cash Money/Birdman and this is a work around. I guess he's allowed to do features.

"Call me trill cosby, I'll spike my own beverage."

I missed you Chainz

New Kendrick and this? What the fuck is going on tonight

What the fuck right now?

Inb4 Views drops and we all die

Top Comments in Pitchfork Review Thread

I didn't think wayne was that bad on this at all. in fact, i thought this was the best wayne sounded in a long time. 2 Chainz brought it out in him, the beats were good to great, and 2 Chainz was entertaining as always. I agree though, about a 7/10. Nice contrast to the rest of the music that's come out recently, and just in time for the weather to get warmer.

A couple things about this review.

  1. Not sure reviewer knows that the hook to "Gotta Lotta" is basically an interpolation of "Scat Man". If they did, wouldn't have called it a "nursery rhyme hook" - would have referenced the actual source.

  2. What the hell does "2 Chainz's enviable respect for Wayne" mean? How is the respect one holds for somebody else enviable? That was just weird, and not sure the author really knows the meaning of the word "enviable".

  3. This Pitchfork review, imo, suffers from what a lot of rap reviews on the site do: the fact that the author doesn't seem to know much about rap, or to actually like rap in general, other than the hot new thing. At least three times the author implies that saying kind of off the wall things is what is important. An example of phrases used to positively describe a rapper or their lines in the review:

"head scratching non sequitors" "freaky one liners" "zinger king" "outlandishness" "delirious"

I think it's a pretty accurate score, still a bit inflated imo. It was an ok project, nothing interesting or memorable for me

Underrated Tity Boi/Wayne track: Real as They Come. Just got thrown on some mixtapes and out there as an internet loosie with no proper release.

you can predict these p4k scores before even clicking the link based on who they are reviewing.

RYM Review

Underrated Collab Album
A budding 2 Chainz mixed with a solid Wayne results in a pretty good collab project that is scarcely mentioned. The production is good but the real highlight is the rapping. While Chainz would release his magnum opus only a year later, he still raps pretty well on here, bringing the goofiness and bigger-than-life caricature that I very much love from him. Both talents shine on Bounce as it encapsulates the unpredictable and free-flowing nature of both, especially Wayne. The solo 2 Chainz tracks are weaker than the ones when both are present (except for Watch Out). A feature or two would have been nice but the two manage to keep the listener's attention for most of the project. Collegrove is a collab project done right, playing into the strong suits of both rappers without being overly long.

Final Verdict: Definitely a sleeper in both artists's discographies. Not the most essential, but hard to look past

[DISCUSSION] Denzel Curry - Imperial (5 Years Later)

Posted: 09 Mar 2021 01:46 PM PST

Imperial is the second studio album by American rapper Denzel Curry. It was released and made available for free download and streaming on SoundCloud on March 9, 2016, then re-released later on Spotify as the deluxe version on October 14, 2016.[1][2] The album features guest appearances from Rick Ross, Joey Bada$$, Twelve'len and Nell. The album was supported by the single: "Knotty Head" featuring Rick Ross.

Imperial received critical acclaim. Stereogum described the album as "a hazy, gurgling rap record that's clearly the work of an active mind".[8]

Tracklist:
1. ULT
2. Gook
3. Sick & Tired
4. Knotty Head (Ft. Rick Ross)
5. Narcotics (replaced by Me Now on streaming)
6. Story: No Title
7. Pure Enough (replaced by This Life on streaming)
8. Zenith (Ft. Joey Bada$$)
9. This Life
10. If Tomorrow's Not Here (Ft. Twelve'len)

Questions:
Favorite songs?
Least favorite songs?
Where do you rank this on Denzel's discography?
How has it aged?
Where do you rank this in the best albums of 2016 (if you do)?
Do you think this was a step-up lyric and production-wise from his previous work?

He explained that he was on his way to an event when he noticed the Maserati following him, and when he tried to evade them, the car got more agressive, including a highway chase. CyHi then spoke about crashing his SUV while trying to escape the car, and he was thankfully able to escape through his busted sunroof. Witnesses told police that two people got out of the Maserati and shot at Cyhi's SUV, while Cyhi was able to get far enough away from the area where they couldn't find him. Cyhi then revealed that he spoke to police on the scene, who told him that it was "open season" on all rappers. To hear more, hit the above clip.

Cyhi the Prynce on Gangsters He Knows Offering to Get the Guys who Tried to Kill Him (Part 2)

Vlad Asks Cyhi the Prince if His Former OG's Had Anything to Do with Shooting (Part 3)

Cyhi revealed that he was trying to think of what would lead someone to try and kill him, and he added that he questioned if his past in the streets was catching up with him. He then explained that a lot of people are making money in Atlanta, which has led to a lot of robberies and violence in the city. To hear more, including Cyhi having paranoia without closure, hit the above clip.

Cyhi Details Making "Sicko Mode" w/ Travis Scott, "Famous" w/ Kanye, Never Signed to Kanye (Part 4)

In this clip, Cyhi the Prynce started off by explaining that he was never signed to Kanye's GOOD Music label, and he added that most people suspected that he was because he has worked with Kanye and associated acts for a long time. Cyhi then spoke about his process for working with Kanye on songs, and he added that he never wants to create a misconception that he writes songs for Kanye. He explained that he will take mental notes of what Kanye is saying in the studio, along with the beats that he's playing, and they'll come up with a final product along the way. After calling Kanye the Michael Jackson of this generation, Cyhi also detailed working with Travis Scott, including on "Sicko Mode," which he says was similar to working with Kanye. To hear more, hit the above clip.

He then spoke about Kanye's announcement to only focus on Christian music, including his latest project, "Jesus is King." Cyhi then revealed that Kanye's "Donda" album is currently on hold while he works out his divorce with Kim Kardashian, which Cyhi says he hopes doesn't happen and the couple are able to work things out. Elsewhere in the interview, Cyhi spoke about Kanye facing backlash for wearing a MAGA hat and supporting Trump, and Cyhi explained that Kanye was friends with Trump before he became president. Cyhi also addressed Kanye's comments about Harriet Tubman and slavery, which you can hear more about above.

Cyhi the Prynce: Kanye Has Access to Classified Info, Flies in World Leaders on Private Jet (Part 6)

Cyhi the Prynce: I Saw Kanye's Family & Friends Cuss Him Out over Running for President (Part 7)

In this clip, Cyhi the Prynce opened up about Kanye running for president in 2020, and he revealed that Kanye had no support from friends or family. Cyhi added that he watched people close to Kanye cuss him out over his decision to run. He then debated with DJ Vlad about Kanye's fans being mostly Democratic, and Cyhi stated that he sees mainly white people at most rap shows, including his and Kanye's, and there's no way that most of them are Democrats. Moving along, Cyhi addressed Kanye's controversial comments about slavery, which led to a discussion of Black history and slavery, which you can hear more about above.

Jhené Aiko re-releasing Sailing Soul(s) onto streaming platforms Friday 03/16

Posted: 09 Mar 2021 01:22 PM PST

Didn't see anybody post this but she posted about it yesterday. A few extra bonus tracks added as well.

March 12, 2011 i met up with @j3collection in Long Beach as the sun was setting to shoot the cover for my mixtape "sailing soul(s)".

there had been a big tsunami in Japan the day before and @j3collection was like... "u sure u wanna do this?!"

i really wanted to get everything done in time to release it on my birthday (3/16) so i was like "YES!" lol

this mixtape was a pivotal moment for me. when i was 12 i was signed to a label, singing songs i had no real connection to. besides that, i had no real stories of my own to tell at 12 lol. then i took a break to focus on school. in my teens i was singing demo records and taking meetings.

i met with one record exec who told me i needed to do a better job at "selling" myself when i came into meetings. dressing like myself, singing like myself, talking like myself... wasn't enough. i thought, "why do i have to sell myself? why do i have to try to convince you of my worth? of who i am??? 🧐

from that point on i decided i would never try to "sell" myself. i would simply BE myself and whoever felt a connection would SEE ME and my worth.

i wanted the cover to express me breaking free from that narrative of having to "sell" myself. i wanted the broken chains to symbolize that freedom of feeling i anchored... free to be me, going with the flow... going with the wind like a sail boat... freeing my soul..."sailing" my soul instead of selling my soul 💙

FINALLY! for it's 10th year anniversary "sailing soul(s)" (plus a few throwback bonus tracks 👀) will be available on all streaming platforms!!

thank you #SoulMates for sailing with me for over 20 years ⛵️

i love u 💙
