Background

Michael Eugene Archer, most notably known as D'Angelo, was born in Richmond, Virginia. From a young age, he was destined to be a musician. As a young child, he taught himself how to play the piano. After a brief stint with a hip hop group called IGU, an A&R signed him to a record label. D'Angelo earned his first hint of notoriety when he helped write and produce the Black Men's United hit, "U will Know." After his contributions to that song, he released his debut studio album Brown Sugar in 1995. Before the public and his peers heard that album many were losing faith in the R&B genre. Questlove, who later collaborated on D'Angelo's following albums, had this to say about the singer's debut album, "I had lost faith in modern R&B. What was lacking for me was musicianship. Not since Prince had any black singer floored me musically the way D'Angelo did. There were plenty of great singers, but their music was mundane. From his keyboard patches to his sloppy, human-like drum programming, I felt like I had a kindred spirit and I wanted to be down." D'Angelo, who was only 21 when the album was released, brought a new and exciting voice to the R&B genre. D'Angelo handled most of the production, played almost all of the instruments, and wrote almost the entire record. The album laid down the attributes and foundation of the D'Angelo we all know and love. The buttery smooth vocals and complex vocal layering. The seamless integration of genres like gospel, jazz, soul, hip hop, and contemporary R&B. The musical expertise is especially evident all throughout the album. The basslines jump out, the keys are incredibly sunny, and the guitar licks are FUNKY. Every track feels methodically put together but has a loose improvised vibe. The album is incredibly easy to lose yourself in like driving on a sunny day with the windows down as the light breeze gently kisses your skin. The tracklist is littered with gems like the title track, Brown Sugar, which is arguably one of the best weed anthems ever recorded. Other gems include Me and Those Dreamin Eyes of Mine' which has one of the best D'Angelo vocal performances of his career along with some of his sweetest lyrics. The horn laced and beautifully jazzy highlight When We Get By. A song that celebrates the sentiment that love is all you need. The wonderful closer Higher that memorializes his gospel roots. His dad was a minister of a local church and playing in churches with his father provided D'Angelo with some of his first musical memories. The album was an incredible introduction to him as an artist and a classic in its own right.

The critical and commercial performance of Brown Sugar placed a new set of expectations on D'Angelo's broad shoulders. Critics were calling him the second coming of R&B. He was drawing comparisons to his ultimate idol, Prince. The public and his fans were eagerly awaiting the followup album. The pressure was not only applied by the public but also by D'Angelo himself. D'Angelo did not want to release an album that did not live up to the masterpieces that some of his idols like Jimi Hendrix, Prince, and Marvin Gaye had made. Along with the pressure of avoiding the sophomore slump, the inner workings of the industry were disheartening to D'Angelo. At times, he had to remind himself why he made music. Two people came into his life that helped D'Angelo take that leap to finally start creating Voodoo; Questlove and the birth of his son. Questlove and D'Angelo formerly met in 1996. Questlove had been trying to get in the same room as D'Angelo after hearing Brown Sugar. Questlove had the chance to play on the album but was very dismissive of R&B at that time. He realized that his dismissiveness was a grave mistake. For a whole year, he was hoping he'd have the chance to see D'Angelo again. The time finally came when The Roots were playing a show at the House of Blues in Chicago. Once Questlove knew that D'Angelo was in the audience, he purposely sabotaged his own show to impress D'Angelo. He played a little known drum loop from the song 4 by Madhouse which was a band created by Prince. It caught the attention of D'Angelo and Questlove became the primary drummer for Voodoo. Not only that, but Questlove was an extremely important part of the entire creation of the album. Questlove and D'Angelo would study the greats together or as they called it, study the "knowledge of the yoga figures." They would watch hours and hours of archival footage a day of their favorite artists. The two had so much footage and never before seen concerts that Questlove said, "We got bootleg-concert connects like fiends got drug-dealer connects." D'Angelo, who never went to college, considered this to be his college education. Studying the footage of the greats helped D'Angelo rediscover his love for making music. D'Angelo assembled an incredible set of talented musicians that included: Questlove, Pino Palladino, Roy Hargrove, Dj Premier, Raphael Saadiq, James Poyser, Charlie Hunter, and Angie Stone. Thus, the creation of Voodoo began.

Review

From the very first moment of Playa Playa, it's easy to hear that Voodoo was mostly made from jam sessions. You hear people in the background talking as a snare is played over and over. Then, a slow burn of a bassline enters the mix provided by Pino Palladino. By the time the horns synchronize perfectly with the drumming by Questlove, the listener is transfixed. The song is extremely patient in how it develops. The playing feels loose but extremely meticulous at the same time. The grimy instrumental compliments D'Angelo's more subdued vocals that have a slightly intimidating edge to them. D'Angelo still gives the listener his trademark harmonies but now they are also accompanied by faint distorted adlibs. The lyrics find D'Angelo mixing basketball references with braggadocio to exert his skills over his opponent. The mixing on the track, as well as the entire album, is done masterfully as every instrument is highlighted and all the moving parts coalesce beautifully. The track segways seamlessly into the DJ Premier produced Devil's Pie.

The instrumental to Devil's Pie is minimalistic as drums, a bassline, and scratches mostly drive the track. D'Angelo mostly sing-raps his way through the track as he breaks down the downside of materialism in American culture. The devil's pie represents all of our urges to attain money, sex, drugs, notoriety, and excess. While satisfying, the cost is sacrificing our humanity in that pursuit. D'Angelo poses the question, how much will be enough? The answer is a single slice will never be enough. Every slice of the pie you consume makes you crave more and more. The pie is meticulously concocted to have an addictive quality that keeps you coming back for more. D'Angelo comes to the conclusion that as enticing as giving in to his urges would be, he ain't going out for a slice of the devil's pie.

The opening three-track hip hop focused run is already incredible but the album really starts hitting its stride with The Line, easily one of the best songs of the album. The song is able to succinctly summarize the pressure of being a musician that is held up to unrealistic expectations. The track begins with just D'Angelo's vocals beautifully harmonizing. The instrumental drops and the listener's ear is greeted by a gorgeous melancholic guitar line and downtempo drums. The vocal stacking on the track is absolutely incredible and there are some astonishing vocal runs. The song is brutally honest as D'Angelo lays his heart bare. The pressure of following up his debut album and living up to the standards he set for himself is taking a toll on him. He knows that the world's eyes are on him and this could be a make or break moment for his career. While nerve-wracking and terrifying, the only way to find out what the results will be is to "stick to his guns" and follow his intuition.

The album continues with the introspective Send It On. The song was the first song D'Angelo wrote for the album. He was inspired to write the song when his son was born. The song is overwhelming in its warmth and compassion. The guitar tones are gorgeous and comforting like sitting by the fire on a cold winter's night. The horns by Roy Hargrove are inviting and accent the song wonderfully in its most emotional moments. The vocals by D'Angelo are angelic and so much is happening vocally that you could completely focus on just the vocals and the song would still be satisfying. Lyrically, D'Angelo reminds his loved ones that he will be there for them. As well as offering the advice to the listener to send their love to those they care about because you never know who might need it the most. D'Angelo speaks of love as a cycle. When you feel loved by another person, pass it on. The climax of the song in the middle of the track is one of my favorite moments in all of music. The track takes a brisk turn into a completely new section as the intensity begins to ramp up. The drumming and the horns become more expressive as the track builds and it seems like D'Angelo is talking to his son directly when he sings: > Hold on be strong, for your own

Move on before long, you'll get home

If you're feeling insecure

You can be sure, it's because

Even if it take forever and a day for me to do

I gotta send it on to you

The song is timeless in both its sound and lyrical content because at the end of the day we all want to love and be loved. Whether that loving comes from words of affirmation or just being there for someone, sometimes "we don't know what else to say" so we just be with the ones we love.

The opening bassline melody of One Mo' Gin has been seared in my memory. I associate the melody with the feeling of longing and wistfulness. It's rare that hearing a melody alone evokes such a specific feeling. Before D'Angelo even sings the lyrics, the feeling of wishing for something that's not there deepens into your soul. I have seen other people describe this song as sexy but I find it extremely bittersweet and quite frankly sad. D'Angelo sounds plagued by the memory of a past lover. The feelings toward his past lover are intensified by the fact that he is unhappy in his current relationship. D'Angelo feels he lost a soulmate and now the memories of the past are haunting him. He just wants one more opportunity to try again but we, as the listener, get no resolve if it ever happened. Instead, the track flips into the most uptempo jazz-inflected portion of the entire record. It sounds like the end portion of the track is snapping D out of his yearning for a small moment.

If D snapped out of his heartbreak, if it all, it was only for a small moment. The Root examines how a lover reworked his entire core. There are a few people that come along in life that have the power to fundamentally change a person and D'Angelo agonizes over the loss of that person. I've said it all throughout this review but the drumming, guitar work, and bass work do not get any better than this album. They work in perfect harmony and accent D'Angelo's pain-filled singing. He knows that he will never be quite the same and is sinking into the feeling of heartbreak and heartache. The vocal layering is especially stunning on the chorus of the song. As you listen closer, you hear more and more vocal layers that add so much depth to the chorus. The song is one of, if not, the strongest song lyrically as it explores heartbreak in different scenarios and with different metaphors. D'Angelo compares the pain of heartbreak and the change his lover caused within him like a dirty stain on his heart. A stain that he can not get rid of. He visits a doctor wondering why he is in so much pain but the doctor finds nothing wrong. Some of the most debilitating pain we can experience is not physical pain but emotional pain. The song has a very interesting instrumental breakdown around the middle of the song. Guitar notes start reversing psychedelically and everything feels as if it's fallen out of place. After this breakdown, the pain, and emptiness that D is feeling result in some of the darkest lyrics of his entire career:

I feel my soul is empty

My blood is cold and I can't feel my legs

I need someone to hold me

Bring me back to life before' I'm dead, dead, dead

The song concludes with some of D'angelo's most explosive vocals as they keep building upon each other until we are guided back to Questlove's drumming and the song ends.

The album's following three tracks Spanish Joint, Feel like Makin Love, and Medley: Greatdayndamornin'/Booty are some of the smoothest and grooviest songs on the album. The Latin infused Spanish Joint' features some exquisite drumming from Giovanni Midalgo on the congos which add a unique flair to the song that makes it one of the standouts on the album. The instrumental breakdown features some exquisite guitar work and all of the individual instruments compliment each other make for an extremely memorable musical moment. The lyrics find D'Angelo moving towards the light after being stuck in the lonely depths of heartbreak. Feel Like Makin Love has D'Angelo covering Roberta Flack's original song. The song, like most of the songs on Voodoo, is extremely low-key and creates a very sensual vibe. The song is perfectly suited to play on a sunny day as you walk and just lose yourself in the impeccable groove of the track. Greatdayndamornin'/Booty' greets the listener with a beautiful harmony from D'Angelo. The song has an incredibly easy-going nature and bright vibe to the instrumentation. The song revels in the push and pull of life. Some days we think that we have it all figured out. Everything seems to be going smoothly but then life throws us a curveball. Then again, that's how life goes, you have to take the good with the bad. D'Angelo urges himself and the listener to keep hoping and working towards a "great day."

It's impossible to state the impact that Untitled (How Does It Feel) had on D'Angelo's career. The music video was everywhere when it dropped. Anyone who watched the video salivated at the sight of his toned and seemingly naked body. The video showed an intense vulnerability and sensuality that is still unparalleled today. It feels like D'Angelo is staring deep into your soul. No matter how many times I've seen the video, it's like he's cast a spell and I am glued to every subtle movement. Unfortunately, the incredible music video had a great negative impact on D'Angelo's career and his life. At shows, women would really only look at him as a sexual object. They would yell and scream for him to take his clothes off. They would throw their panties and bras on stage. D'Angelo started getting frustrated that he was being looked at as an object and not as a musician. After touring, D'Angelo became a recluse and sank deep into addiction. That addiction almost killed him when he was ejected from his Hummer while on cocaine and drunk. He barely survived but kept giving into his vices. Untitled (How Does It Feel) thrust him into the biggest spotlight of his career. The pressure of being sexualized, the responsibility of being a black genius, and yearning for anonymity again resulted in many bad years. The passing of his dear friend J Dilla, who greatly influenced the drumming on the album, helped him get his life back together. He realized that he needed to beat his addictions and worked towards sobriety. The song itself is one of his very best. The most sensual song on the album and that's saying something. The gentle piano notes accentuate the intimacy of the song. The singing is the rawest and most sexually charged of his career. The lyrics are explicit and endearingly sweet. And at the climax of the song, there are finally no restraints on D'angelo's voice as he belts out. The song ends very suddenly. His engineer, Russell Elvado, says that they ran out of tape but they decided to keep it anyway. Prophetically, just like the song's sudden ending, D'angelo too would disappear seemingly out of nowhere. Only returning when he was ready to come back on his own terms.

The final track, Africa, is the most serene and one of the most beautiful tracks on the album. The instrumentation is drop-dead gorgeous with the piano and reversed guitar notes sounding ethereal. The song is dedicated to D'angelo's son and is a heartwarming ode to his child. Like all fathers, he wants to protect his son from all the evil of the world and give him the best opportunities to succeed in life. He describes the feeling that only a father can attempt to put in words. How life starts over when you have a child and your soul is now intertwined with them. The song's outro is beautiful and peaceful like it probably was when D'Angelo held his child in his arms for the first time. The birds are chirping and you can hear running water. All feels right with the world. The song exudes life and ends the album on a life-affirming note.

Voodoo is one of my favorite albums of all time. Every time I listen to the album, I escape into a funky and soulful laden place filled with heartbreak, love, maturity, incredible joy, and sensuality. The musicianship is next to none as it features some of the best of the best at their respective instruments and their craft. The mixing on the album is warm, extremely detailed, and timeless. I pick up on new details every time I listen to the album. Then there is D'Angelo himself who has some of the most stunning vocals and vocal arrangements I've heard in music. The lyricism, like all of the album, is extremely organic, conversational, and stream of consciousness. It's evident how much time was labored over this magnificent album and I thank D'angelo for creating such a beautiful work of art.

Favorite Lyrics

Devil's Pie

Who am I to justify

All the evil in our eye

When I myself feel the high

From all that I despise

The Line

Said, I know everybody watchin' me

I said the pressure is on

From every angle, political to personal

Will I hang or get left hangin'?

Will I fall off, or is it bangin'?

And I says it's up to God

It's up to the man upstairs

One Mo' Gin

I know you got someone and I got somebody too

But I'm unhappy and I miss the shit we used to do

I miss your smile, your mouth, your laughter, baby

Never bumped into your kind before or after

The Root

I feel my soul is empty

My blood is cold and I can't feel my legs

I need someone to hold me

Bring me back to life before' I'm dead, dead, dead

Spanish Joint

Whenever it rains I feel this way

A little somethin' to get me through this day

Give me a little that, no time flat

Gonna be a good thing

Serene but in need of feelin' free

Lettin' go and landin' on my feet

Brushed the dirt off my back, no time flat

Gonna be a good thing

Africa

And this game of love

Ever since the day you came

My whole world began to change

I knew then to dedicate my life

For your own

And this game of love

Everyday I see you grow

And remember what you already know

I receive, I receive the love

That radiates from your glow

Talking Points

Those who were around when this dropped, what was it like listening to it for the first time?

Which of his three classics do you prefer? Why?

How do you think the Soulquarians influenced this album?

What are your favorite songs and why?

Did this album grow on you the more you listened to it or was it immediate?

As it's now been 20 years since the album was released, how has it aged?

Chris Travis and Xavier Wulf (members of Seshollowaterboyz) are beefing on Twitter.

Word has it that Chris Travis has been dissing his fellow groupmates (Xavier Wulf, Bones, and Eddy Baker) for the past two years on some tracks from his previous mixtapes. I'm not too familiar with his music, but some fans on Chris's twitter have noticed this. As of late, Chris has been dissing a producer and friend of Xavier's named IDON'TKNOWJEFFREY. Don't know enough info on how or why he has issues with the guy, but Chris has been actively dissing the guy on Twitter and recently released a diss track towards him.

Xavier's tweet that started it all: https://twitter.com/XavierWulf/status/1275479631731159042

Chris's response to his tweet: https://twitter.com/KenshinTravis/status/1275481547404005376

However, Chris then tweeted this out to a fan asking about his involvement with the group: https://twitter.com/KenshinTravis/status/1275482224901541888

Chris continues to mock Xavier Wulf and SHWB with the following tweets: first tweet second tweet third tweet fourth tweet

Chris Travis also suggests that Bones might be buying plays in response to a fan's tweet (take this with a grain of salt): https://twitter.com/KenshinTravis/status/1275488673073475585

EDIT: Apparently, this has to do with a song Jeffrey did about three years back, bragging about performing acts of rape. Chris found a tweet about the song and made a quoted tweet about it.
