Kendrick Lamar - The Heart Pt IV

Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:04 PM PDT

The Heart Pt. IV

Here's a brief history of the series:

The Heart Pt I - Released April 2010, a relative no name in the game, confident Kendrick makes a bold prediction. He says he will be as great as rap legends like 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Big Pun, Eazy E and Big L without having to die early like them.

The Heart Pt II - Released September 2010, this is the only track in the series that is part of a project, the opening song of Overly Dedicated. The intro features the late artist Dash Snow and the outro features late vocalist Alori Joh, who was Ab-Souls girlfriend and heavily affiliated with TDE until her death in 2012

The Heart Pt III, featuring Ab Soul, & Jay Rock - Released October 2012, this was the first in the series that was released after gaining recognition and getting his Dre co-sign. He opens this one up with another bold line:

"When the whole world see you as Pac reincarnated"

The Heart Pt. IV- Released March 2017, five years since the previous installment, now Kendrick is officially a superstar. The seemingly crazy predictions he'd made years before have come true:

"I prophesized on my last song, you laughed at me"

With drill on the rise, first in Chicago, then UK, now New York, the drill scene is growing throughout the world with more cities having their own scene.

What other sub-genres are emerging? Will they create a movement as big as drill?

[DISCUSSION] Meek Mill - Dreams Worth More Than Money (5 Years Later)

Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:39 PM PDT

Dreams Worth More Than Money is the second studio album by American rapper Meek Mill. It was released on June 29, 2015, by Maybach Music Group and Atlantic Records. It was initially scheduled for release on September 9, 2014, however, it has been delayed few times due to Meek Mill's revoking of his probation on July 11, 2014, thus sentencing him to jail for 3 to 6 months. The album made its entry at number one on the US Billboard 200; and sold 246,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, with 215,000 coming from traditional album sales, marking as Meek's first number-one album on the chart. Due to the change in the tracking week by Nielsen Music SoundScan, its first week sales were counted towards its second week on the charts. At the 2016's Billboard Music Awards, the album won an award for Top Rap Album.

Background

Meek Mill said that with this album, he is focusing more on rapping than on money. He said that rappers, especially in Philadelphia, have not received credit for helping their communities going on to state during his interview with XXL stating, that "If I'm in the position to help, I'm gonna help." Meek Mill says that he has come to realize there is more to the music industry than wealth, a philosophy which resulted in the album's title, called Dreams Worth More Than Money.

Trivia

  1. This is still the best selling Meek Mill album.

  2. Quentin Miller famously contributed to Drake's verse on "R.I.C.O.", but that wasn't the only co-written part of the album. Tory Lanez wrote August Alsina's part on "My Niggas"

Discussion Questions

  • How does this album rank in Meek Mill's discography?

  • Best tracks? Worst tracks?
