[DISCUSSION] Do we throw the word “classic” around too freely these days?

Posted: 17 May 2020 07:46 PM PDT

I'm pretty young, so maybe this has always been going on in hip hop circles, but I feel like every time I go online to discuss music, everybody is always calling everything "classic", even when it doesn't necessarily deserve that rating. Albums which have barely been out for a year are dubbed "classic", and every time a new project drops, everyone is always arguing over whether or not it's an "instant classic."

To me, this devalues the word classic. If everything is classic, then nothing is classic. No matter how great an artist is, everything they drop can't be considered "classic." In fact, I'd say even the greatest rappers of all time only have a couple classics at most. For example, everyone considers Illmatic a classic, with Stillmatic and It was Written being in the conversation as runner-ups. Yet no one would ever say the same thing about albums like Nastradamus or Life is Good, despite the fact that almost everyone would agree that Nas is one of the best to ever do it. Or, to speak more modernly: Good kid; maad city and To Pimp A Butterfly will obviously go down as classic albums. But to call Kendricks other works, like DAMN. and Section.80 "classics", to me not only waters down the meaning of the word, but does disservice to just how rare albums of that quality and influence are. Classics are genre-defining game changers, must-listens, the albums that any hip hop head should listen to if they want to be taken seriously.

Sp when people call projects (mind you, projects I absolutely love) like IGOR, Astroworld, and Taboo classic, I wonder if they truly do see these projects as absolutely essential to the genre, or are simply just trying to show how much they love their favorite albums.

[DISCUSSION] Janelle Monáe- The Archandroid (10 Year Anniversary)

Posted: 17 May 2020 08:14 PM PDT

Ten years ago today, Janelle Monae released her debut album, The Archandroid. The album was heralded as one of the best albums of 2010. It continues the world building narrative of her debut EP in 2007, Metropolis: The Chase Suite. The album is the second and third suite in the story, with the EP being the first suite. The story follows Cindi Mayweather and her story to free the people of Metropolis, as well as her human love interest, Anthony Greendown. The album blends a plethora of different genres; some of them being funk, neo soul, R&B, pop, hip hop, and many more.

How has this album aged for you? Where does it rank in her discography? Favorite songs? Favorite moments? Rate it out of 10?
