"There's times I unknowingly jump into something having never prepared for it before. When I saw stereobread's review of Niggaz of Destruction pop up on my feed I, rather unconsciously, clicked it. Next thing I found was a rather unknown Memphis Rap album released on cassette only with strange track lengths and comments saying it's essential Hip-Hop and that one song sounds like a cave in Pokemon. In other words, sign me up. For long-time readers of my work, you'll likely guess that N.O.D. is not my style, considering it's largely 90's Gangsta Rap. Well, in this case at least, you'd be wrong.

Why? Because of one thing; authenticity. Some of my favorite Gangsta Rap records are ones in which I feel as if I'm looming in the ghetto. Just like music that relies on atmosphere and setting, unrelenting Hip-Hop, like Mobb Deep's 'Shook Ones Part. II' for example, thrive off the nerve, tension, and vibrations of streets and moments in time where anything can go wrong. For Niggaz Of Destruction the effect is made palpable because of piss poor recording software. The vocals are muffled, the bass drowns out the background, the beats simple and plain. The handful of rappers, of which no, I don't know their respective names, layer over one another constantly, giving off the feeling of entrapment. Like I've been coerced into their basement as the group tests my ability to remain calm.

Just look at the cover. Reminds me of Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), except in this case there's no need for masks to hide their faces because the poor lighting and photography already does that. Without sounding too much like a nerdy white boy, these guys are real, and I can sense it. Born in the trenches of Memphis, these teens don't need to put on a facade to act hard, cause they already are. The lyrics, as should be obvious, are centered around violence, gangs, and death. N.O.D., either by subliminal fear, constantly remind the listener that they're not scared to die, because in their world that was a real possibility.

So while I'm lured into Niggaz Of Destruction because of its grimy world and undivine characters, the music, surprisingly, keeps me around. Lyrically, nothing new is being said, neither is the way they go about doing it (for the most part). However, the beats are drenched in Memphis Rap. Think pre-fame Three 6 Mafia. Minimal everything with a focus on percussion, melodic loops, and hazy ambience, Niggaz Of Destruction fulfills the fantasies many would perceive when it comes to the city's underbelly. The first five beats follow this idea, and executes it pretty damn well.

I exclude the last one because hot damn, 'Fugitive' goes above and beyond. You'll get that sense the second it starts. Being that N.O.D. never achieved much fame, their work likely wasn't an influence, but being that this came out in 1996, 'Fugitive' is one of the first solid instances of Cloud Rap I've ever discovered. Obviously, the two genres are linked, but the aura surrounding 'Fugitive' is unlike anything else set to be released for over a decade after it. I thought that Pokemon statement was absurd until I heard this track. At over nine minutes, a clear posse cut, the thing somehow never manages to get stale, with a litany of flows testing the waters of this new, unearthed sound. Wanna hear something arguably more asinine than it being an original Cloud Rap track? A few of these emcees, and the flows they support, sound oddly similar to Lil Yachty. Yes, Lil Yachty. Offbeat but still able to maintain a quick-lipped slur, there's a handful of moments on 'Fugitive' his impressionable act immediately dawned on me. Incredibly futuristic track.

As for the other five songs. There's not a single one I don't enjoy, but none that reach the level of the outro. The hooks on 'Tiny Lame' and 'Bud Keeps Me Feinding Pt. 3' are excellent with their use of loops, drilling home sayings that'll ensue dread (being that this is a Horrorcore album). The beats on both these are dirty too, with the former uses chimes that sound like a wintery Christmas, while the latter plays with an out-of-tune piano loop. 'No Fear' does this same thing, using the piano as its lead instrument. As does the title track, which crescendos the piano, giving off an eery vibe that makes it the most Memphis Rap-like track here. An all around provocative album that gets me going each time I listen to it."

Guidelines

This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is your chance to practice being a critic. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!!

How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets? Is it the first time you've listened to it? What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't.

DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE!!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged.

His comments in this video seem to have started it all

After this, apparently rapper BMagic302 recorded a diss called "ScHoolgirl Q" and had his fans bombard ScHoolboy's Instagram with comments repping the 302.

ScHoolboy Q (or the people that manage his account) took down the first post about his merchandise that had been flooded with comments from Delaware, prompting BMagic302 to comment:

"Nigga u deleted the whole post and reposted???? 😱 Oh u SENSITIVE SENSITIVE 🤣 #SchoolGirlWho diss on my page now got this nigga in his feelings like a low budget drake"

ScHoolboy Responds

YFN LUCCI’s car shot up in atl

Posted: 15 May 2019 12:40 PM PDT

YFN Lucci might be in the market for a bulletproof ride now that his G-Wagon is riddled with bullet holes from a drive-by shooting that left one person in the vehicle injured.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... YFN Lucci's Mercedes SUV was shot up Friday night in Atlanta, and when police responded, they found a man suffering from two gunshot wounds. We're told the victim was not Lucci, and the rapper isn't listed on the police report.

Our ATL Sources tell us it's Lucci's whip, although his mother is the registered owner.

How Do Certifications work?

When a song has 150,000,000 streams in the US or 1,000,000 sales, an artist can purchase a certification (for around ~$300). You don't automatically get a plaque when you cross the threshold. The label or the artist needs to buy it. Often artists will buy certifications in bulk before they release new music.
