Recommended If You Like Thread - May 18, 2019

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

‪"7" the EP! next month. ‬🤩

Based on the screenshot, it's safe to assume that "Old Town Road" will be on the album (whether that be the remix, the original, both, the Diplo remix, Young Thug remix, etc.)

Tyler, the Creator - GONE, GONE / THANK YOU

Posted: 18 May 2019 12:42 PM PDT

Tyler The Creator’s UK ban has (potentially) been lifted

Posted: 18 May 2019 02:39 AM PDT

Tyler's initial Instagram post

He's just posted this, really hoping it isn't a troll.

EDIT: THIS IS NOT A DRILL

Tyler tweets extended video confirming to us he's outside of Buckingham Palace

Rex Orange County reacts to the news

Edit 2: Tyler's doing something in London @ 3pm, potentially a show or a pop up of some sorts. Keep an eye out on his Instagram AND Twitter! (Got so caught up about the ban lift I forgot to mention this part in the post lol)

Edit 3: London show was at Copeland Park, Bussey Building but got cancelled due to people climbing gates and being chaotic

[DISCUSSION] The Roots - ...and then you shoot your cousin (5 Years Later)

Posted: 18 May 2019 04:04 PM PDT

It's officially been 5 years since The Legendary Roots Crew's latest album. While it's usually not close to the top of fan/critic rankings of The Roots' albums, it's absolutely not an album to be ignored and it's certainly still a great record. After all, there's a reason The Roots is considered one of the most consistent groups in hip hop (if not the most consistent). What's everyone's thoughts on the album 5 years after? Couple talking points in case anyone wants to follow them:

  • How would you rank the album in The Roots' unbelievably stacked discography?

  • What do you think of the album's concept? Do you think The Roots executed it well, or do you wish they'd executed it differently (or gone with a whole other concept to begin with)

  • Definitely a unique sound that The Roots went with, indicative of the band's never stagnant production/beat selection; do you enjoy the production Questlove and co went with for this album?

  • How do you think the album has aged? Have you gone back to it a lot?

  • Last but not least, favourite beat/verse/feature/song? Why is the best song, chorus and beat "When The People Cheer"?

Injury Reserve "GTFU" samples classical music (Introduction and Allegro by Ravel)

Posted: 18 May 2019 08:35 PM PDT

Just listened to GTFU off of Injury Reserve's new album. Souds like they sample a part from Ravel's Introduction and Allegro (for string quartet, harp, flute, and clarinet). Here is the part of the Injury Reserve song where they sample it:

[DISCUSSION] KYLE - Light of Mine (1 year later)

Posted: 18 May 2019 06:28 PM PDT

A year ago today (5/18/18), KYLE dropped his first real, debut album, "Light of Mine".

Thoughts? Has it aged well? How does it compare to his other work? Do you look forward to new music?

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Duckwrth - THE FALLING MAN

Posted: 18 May 2019 05:50 AM PDT

So it's been about a day or something:

  1. Favourite tracks?

  2. Features?

  3. Do you feel that in a way Duckwrth is attempting to reinvent his sound with the heavy bass/orchestra instruments on this record?

  4. General thoughts?

Edit: To people that are only hearing him for the 1st time, I'd definitely reccomend his previous projects. Sonically, compared to THE FALLING MAN, they are way more mellow and upbeat, but he has some absolute gems on his two other mixtapes

So I'm not a hip hop head I'm mainly a metal guy. I can probably count my hip hop collection on two hands. This album I absolutely love, probably one one of my top ten albums of all time. I was just wondering what the concensus was in the hip hop community?
