NYPD calling for the arrest of 50 Cent over his alleged threats on the cop who said to have 50 killed on sight

Posted: 22 Feb 2019 01:11 PM PST

Speech:

Let me say something about the threats 50 Cent made against NYPD. I'm asking NYPD Commissioner O'Neill to send investigators to charge 50 Cent with aggravated harrasment of a police officer, for 50 Cent was a threat to law enforcement. 50 should be arrested, in today's climate of anti-police behavior, we should take this seriously, this is not a joke. 50 Cent should go to jail for threating a law enforcement officer, and especially a community leader of this reputation. Thank you very much

[DISCUSSION] The Roots - Things Fall Apart (20 Years Later)

Posted: 22 Feb 2019 09:29 AM PST

Arguably the best album in The Roots' unbelievably stacked discography, and arguably one of the best albums from the '90s, less than a year before the decade came to an end.

How do you think the album holds up 20 years after its release? What are your favourite songs on it? How do you rank it amongst The Roots' discography? Do you agree with it being called the best album in The Roots' discography, or do you disagree? Discuss.

A Guide to Chilean Hip Hop

Posted: 22 Feb 2019 09:17 AM PST

Inspired by Japanese, Chinese and Korean Hip Hop Guides.

It's 1984 and Hip Hop's arrival can be heard through the Radio, Cinemas, TV's and would later expand even further with the return of nationals that had been exiled during the Pinochet Dictatorship (1973-1990). With Break-dance as the discipline that stood out, its participants did not have many resources yet the movement quickly spread to popular areas of Santiago. With the passing of time new techniques and dance moves were acquired thanks to TV shows like Sabado Gigante and the support from anonymous immigrants that arrived to Chile.

The biggest breakthrough came thanks to Jimmy Fernandez who arrived from Italy with some experience as an MC and influenced by groups like Afrika Bambaataa. At this point the first B-Boy bands started to appear, such as B14 and Floor Masters (who's lead dancer was from Los Angeles, California).

The beginning of the 90's presented a rough start for Hip Hop as the first groups started to form, pioneers like Los Marginales and Panteras Negras) were one of the first ones on the scene. The first DJ's were also being formed and at the same time Graffiti artists as well as multiple mural brigades started to originate as a response to the existing military regime.

With this preliminary panorama the year 1991 consolidated one of the most important groups in Chilean history called Latin Posse, now known as La Pozze Latina with Jimmy Fernandez in the lead, MC Rode and DJ Cogollo. Fast forward to 1994 we could see sporadic appearances of this movement in national TV, with icons like Jorge Zapata, leader of "Gravedad Zero" which is recognized as one of the most important break dance groups in America, Central and South.

These signs of rebirth brought with them a new fashion, unknown by the national youth mass and gave rise to a new and important stage in the life of Chilean Hip Hop: The massification of Hip Hop.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Groups

  • La Pozze Latina: Formed by Jimmy Fernandez and DJ Raff
  • Tiro de Gracia: Started in 1991 by Juan Sativo and Lenwa Dura and later joined by Zaturno, they would become the first group to make the jump from the marginal scene to become a massive reference with their album "Ser Humano" produced by EMI Records and would make them a bestselling Chilean rap group. They split up for a second time in 2019.
  • Makiza: Started in 1997 by SEO2, DJ Squat, Cenzi and French national: Anita Tijoux. Their style is marked by political and social criticism, generally attacking the military dictatorship. The lyrics in their first album "Vida Salvaje" attracted the interest of Sony Entertainment Music, who would later produce Makiza's second album "Aerolineas Makiza" after they become interested in Chilean rap thanks to the results of Tiro de Gracia.
    • Fun Fact - Makiza comes from the french word "Maquisard", a resistance of the Nazi occupation that hid in the "maquis" (bush)
    • La Rosa de los Vientos - "If I was born outside, I'm proud, and I have native blood, better, because its beautiful"
    • En Paro - Polemic second single of the "A.M." album that attacked several public figures who collaborated with Pinochet's military dictatorship.
  • Salvaje Decibel: Formed by Funky Flu, Portavoz, Revilo Marley and Ezer in 2000, their lyrics are charged with political and social criticism.
  • Mente Sabia Cru: Started by MC Unabez and DJ Frays in 1999, and later joined by Terrible, Matiah Chinaski, DJ Pére, Pancho Pros and Dr. Bene. They have released 4 albums as a band (the latest is Elefante in 2017) and every member has individually released their own, which they consider a part of the bands history.
  • Liricistas: One of the biggest names in Hip Hop after the 2000 generations, they were raised by Makiza and Tiro de Gracia . Created by Armestyle and Benjamic, who met in school in 2003, they would record their songs at home until 2011, when TexasEstudio took them in and edited "4 Life" which established them as one of the most important groups in Hip Hop today. In 2016 they released their 4th album and today work with their own Hip Hop magazine and radio show.
  • Movimiento Original: One of the most popular groups in post 2000's Chilean Hip Hop. Internet played a big role in their musical distribution. They quartet launched their first demo in 2008 and from there their work was in permanent ascent. Four albums, multiple festivals and events and an intense schedule nationally and internationally. Formed by Aerstame, Stailok, DJ Acres and MC Piri who left in 2015.
  • Honorable Mentions for Groups:

Rappers

  • Zaturno - He was a big name when Makiza and Tiro de Gracia were around, he's still in the game and an icon to the hip hop scene today.
  • Mantoi - One of my favorite liricists ever. At the beginning he was not welcomed between other rappers due to his higher economic status, but his lyrics and flow made him one of the most respected rappers today. He's also the one on the piano. He also got signed by some Publisher and writes books.
  • Jota Droh (Hordatoj) - Huge in the underground scene until 2005, he is today one of the best rappers in Chile.
  • Jonas Sanchez - Recognized and highly respected national rapper.
  • Bronko Yotte - This dude was a friends english teacher in school, love his stuff.
  • CHR - A more "hardcore" voice, would blast this shit in the car with my homies when I was like 15
  • GuerilleroKulto - Big name in the scene, personally I should listen to more of his stuff.
  • Gran Rah - Smooth

  • Honorable Mentions for Rappers:
    • ChysteMC
    • Omega El CTM
    • Leviatan
    • El Shaaki
    • Esnou
    • Poetisa Rap.

DJ's

Other

HipHopology - A movement started in the early 2000's in the ghettos of Santiago. It's objective was to forge "a current of political hip hop" that went beyond discourse and organized to fight for social transformation
