Hip-Hop Listening Club of the Week #265: Ma$e - Harlem World (1997) Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:56 AM PST Today we're listening to Harlem World by Ma$e Background By /u/ksweet98 In the wake of the impactful death of The Notorious BIG, Bad Boy Records found a new star in Ma$e, a Harlem rapper from the same crew as Big L and Cam'ron. In 1997 Ma$e released Harlem World, a multi platinum earning debut album with multiple crossover hits, most notably Feel So Good. The album was met with acclaim across the boards from critics, to die hard hip hop heads, to the mainstream pop crowd. The first thing you'll notice about Ma$e is he sounds monotone and nonchalant, this is all in aid to his calm charismatic delivery. Ma$e will spit some of the hottest 16s in the world at the time and just sorta shrug it off. Its effortlessly cool. One thing you'll notice about Harlem World is the many sung hooks and poppy sensibilities. Although this may sound like a bad this, Ma$e pulls these songs off ridiculously well, Bad Boy in general was very good at this formula. The features are killer, Jay Z, DMX, 8Ball & MJG, and The LOX all deliver. Nearly every song is a hit and it's a super enjoyable listen front to back. Surprisingly this album doesn't get brought up on reddit ever despite having a big impact in its time. Ma$e is a pioneer for Harlem hip hop, from Big L to A$AP Rocky his impact is felt. Harlem World should be an essential in my honest opinion. Artist: Ma$e Album: Harlem World Year: 1997 Representing: Harlem, NY Label: Bad Boy Producers: Puff, Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri & more Guidelines: This is an open thread to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is your chance to be a critic. Please keep any top level comments to 140+ characters.

Found Apple Watch on the floor of the ASAP Rocky concert at the Forum last night Posted: 01 Feb 2019 07:19 PM PST I know this is probably a long shot, but I'm looking for the owner of an Apple Watch that must've broken off during the mosh - apple really needs a way for people that find devices to contact the owners. That awkward moment what I met Bas (rapper from Dreamville) Posted: 01 Feb 2019 09:33 PM PST This was years ago when I got a ticket to see J. Cole during the 4YEO tour. I paid a little extra for the VIP package that included dreamville merch and a picture with Bassy bas. Before taking the picture with him, I thought it would be a great idea to bring up the little beef he had with Dame Dash. I asked him "I was just wondering, did you and dame dash resolve that beef y'all had?" he looked at me befuddled and replied back "what are you talking about". I then just replied back "oh never mind then, it was just something I was wondering" the room got awkward and he looked at me confused af. I immediately regretted saying that but it was too late. the camera man then said say "say cheese" Bas then put on the fakest smile and I got the pic. This was years ago but to this day whenever I hear Bas's music I just cringe so hard b/c I just think back to that awkward encounter. does anyone else have any awkward encounters with an artist they met? bas interview 21:50 talks about the light beef I was referring to (Dame copied his FIENDS clothing brand swag) [link] [comments] | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

[DISCUSSION] Kendrick Lamar - C4 (10 Years Later) Posted: 01 Feb 2019 02:10 AM PST Its been a decade since the pivotal moment in Kendrick Lamar's career - dropping the C4 mixtape with Lil Wayne's cosign, pushing Kendrick into 'known' status for the first time in his, at that point, 6 year career. 10 years later, how does this tape hold up? What are your top 3 favourites and least favourites from the tape? Where does this rank in Kendrick's discography? How did this impact your view of Kendrick going forward (or when looking back)? How did this influence the game? Favourite bars, hooks, verses and features? Has kendrick evolved since the release of this project? (I think we all know the answer to that) Discuss away [link] [comments] |
