Guide to Japanese Hip-Hop

Posted: 19 Feb 2019 05:56 PM PST

Inspired by the guide to Chinese hip-hop, I figured I could write a little bit about the Japanese scene. Hip-hop in Japan is still an underground genre, but it's by no means small. I've noticed Japanese artists like Nujabes and KOHH are relatively well received even outside of Japan. While I do love them, I think Japan has a lot more to offer than the two of them. Too much to cover in just one list, but these are some artists that I enjoy and some that are popping right now in Japan.

Rappers

KOHH – Most people probably know him for his verse on It G Ma, but he does have a lot of solid songs that are often overlooked. Went from flexing with his iPhone 5 to not caring about money and only wanting to make art. He just released a new album February 9 called Untitled.

働かずに食う hatarakazu ni kuu (I Don't Work)

Mitsuoka

I'm Dreamin

ANARCHY – One of the more well-established artists in Japanese hip hop. He left a gang in 1998 to start rapping, dropped his first solo EP in 2003 and is still relevant in the Japanese hip hop scene.

Blood In Me

LOYALTY

Run It Up feat. MIYACHI

AKLO – He's half Mexican and grew up in Mexico, but he's currently based in Tokyo. He occasionally throws in some Spanish words but raps mainly in Japanese. He released his first song entirely in Spanish not too long ago.

Outside the Frame

UNDER THE CLIFF feat. JAY'ED

DIRTY WORK

kiLLa – A group that consists of the members YDIZZY, KEPHA, BLAISE, Arjuna and the producers No Flower and acuteparanoia. There used to be another member, kZm, that left due to creative differences. Very trap influenced, they often have a slightly darker sound. They all make solo music that are worth checking out too, especially YDIZZY and Arjuna.

SHINE

MURASAKI

YDIZZY - DAMARE

BLAISE & Arjuna - SUIMASEN

MIYACHI – Born and based in New York. Originally rapped exclusively in English, but he dropped a Bad and Boujee remix in Japanese that blew up in the Japanese scene and has since been rapping a lot more in Japanese.

WAKARIMASEN

MADA FLY

24

KOJOE – He lived in Queens for about 10 years and was married to Apani B. for a while. He mainly raps in Japanese, but does mix in English a lot.

80 Connections

24

Splits

JP THE WAVY – He dropped a song called Cho Wavy De Gomenne, which essentially means "sorry for being so wavy", that reached mainstream success and kinda became a meme. Even spawned a few parodies such as "sorry for being so otaku" and "sorry for being so sexy" by one of Japan's biggest porn actresses. (Kirara Asuka, for the curious) His sound is pretty americanized and would probably fit right in the current scene if it wasn't for the language barrier.

Cho Wavy De Gomenne

Neo Gal Wop

BUKKAKE feat. Hiyadam, MIYACHI Fun fact, bukkake means to pour/splash and doesn't actually have anything to do with 15 guys cumming on a girls face.

Kiano Jones – Brooklyn-born and Kobe-raised. He released a few solid tracks while he was still 14, but stopped making music for a while. Only to came back two years later with his debut album, Unknown Future, and a much deeper voice once puberty hit. My favorite track from him is Ankoku Shonen., it's not up on Youtube but it's available on Spotify and Apple Music. His album Unknown Future is such a solid project, I can't recommend it enough. He's half black, just in case someone reacts to him using the N-word.

ni**as can't f**k with me

Unknown Future

Cold Space feat. Loota (Prod. by Flammable)

YENTOWN – A collective/label with too many people to include in this list, but some people worth checking out are kZm (pronounced Kazuma), Awich and anything produced by Chaki Zulu.

MONYPETZJNKMN - TOKYO DRIFT feat. Yung Lean & Bladee

kZm - Wolves feat. 5lack

kZm - Emotion

Awich - 紙飛行機 kamihikouki (Paper Plane)

Awich - Love Me Up

DALLJUB STEP CLUB – A slightly more experimental group that mixes different genres like jungle, dub, house and hip hop. They're insanely good live.

Future Step

2

Red Bull

Shing02 – Another bilingual rapper, as he moved to Oakland as a teenager. He also produces under the name Vector Omega. Jazzy and chill vibes.

400

親泣かせ oyanakase (Parents Cry)

I Miss You

King Giddra – A group, heavily inspired by Public Enemy, that consisted of the rappers K DUB SHINE and ZEEBRA, and the producer DJ OASIS. They brought a more conscious and political side of hip hop to the Japanese scene in the 90's.

見まわそう mimawasou (Look Around)

Code Number 0117

真実の弾丸 shinjutsu no dangan (Bullet of Truth)

RHYMESTER – Another group from the 90's, that's still active today. Their first three albums are great, but they signed to a major label in 2001 and everything since has been kinda meh.

報復 houfuku (Pay back)'95

AB・A・O・B

悪趣味節 akushumi setsu (Tasteless Season)

BAD HOP – Japanese "mumble rap." An 8-member group, T-Pablow, YZERR, Tiji Jojo, Benjazzy, Yellow Pato, G-K.I.D, Vingo and Bark. They're one of the few hip-hop acts to have a show at the Nippon Budokan. The Budokan is huge milestone for Japanese musicians, it's one of the biggest music venues in Tokyo and is usually sign of having made it in the Japanese music industry.

これ以外 kore igai (Apart From This)

No Sleep

Kawasaki Drift

Producers

DJ Krush – Probably one of the first Japanese people to get really involved with hip hop. Left a yakuza gang to pursue music after watching the movie Wild Style. He has a huge discography, but it's all really good and worth checking out. Strictly Turntablized is a personal favorite.

Dig This Vibe

Only the Strong Survive

Meiso feat. Black Thought & Malik B.

Nujabes – Often called the Japanese J Dilla, they were both born on the exact same date even. Unfortunately, he passed away back in 2010. Heavy jazz influence.

Aruarian Dance

Feather

Substantial - Somebody Stole My Shit

Olive Oil – If you like Nujabes, you'll like this guy as well. A lot of jazz samples.

Pianity

Question Love

¥STERDAY

Chaki Zulu – He used to make a lot of electronic music in the duo, THE LOWBROWS, it wasn't until 2015 that he started getting into hip-hop and has quickly made a name for himself. He produces most of the tracks for the people at YENTOWN.

SALU - LIFE STYLE feat. 漢 a.k.a. GAMI, D.O

Cherry Brown - 浅草ARデート Asakusa AR Date

Gab3 - I Need You

LISACHRIS – My waifu.

ru a samurai?

Pisces - YURAYURA KIRAI

Hannya, ZORN, Shingo Nishinari - いいね iine(That's Nice)

Other

Spikey John - Japan's Lyrical Lemonade. Not really, but he works with a lot of up-and-coming rappers and is kinda the go-to director for them.

Havit Art Studio - These guys are also kinda the go-to for hip hop visuals.

My Spotify playlist. If you're interested in more Japanese hip hop, you can check out my Spotify playlist. I'm always adding new stuff to it.

Another Spotify playlist. It's not mine, but it has a lot of good stuff.

Samurai Champloo – A samurai anime mixed with some hip hop influences. It's worth watching just for the soundtrack even if you don't like anime. Nujabes did a good portion of the soundtrack including the opening.

Tokyo Tribes/Tokyo Tribe 2 – A manga, anime and live action movie. The basic premise is that Tokyo is split up and all the different districts are run by gangs, one gang in particular is trying to take over other's territory which leads to an all-out war between the gangs. It borrows and exaggerates a lot from hip hop and street culture. The manga is a bit hard to find even in Japanese, but the anime is out there with English subtitles. The live action movie is a hip hop musical directed by Sion Sono, he's known for making bizarre and absurdist movies. It's very campy, but entertaining in a "so bad it's good" way.

NEET Tokyo – Japanese Vlad. Interviews with artists. Might be kinda useless if you don't speak Japanese.
