Here's the project that put Eminem on a course to dominate the rap game for years. Featuring Eminem and Dr Dre, one of the best duos in rap history, this album is one of the best projects of Eminem's legendary career. What do you think about this album 20 years later?

Guide to Korean Hip Hop

Posted: 20 Feb 2019 05:12 AM PST

You had your Chinese guide, your Japanese guide, now get ready for your Korean guide. Y'all know Keith Ape, Jay Park, Dumbfoundead, perhaps even Okasian. But let me take you past the surface of everyone's existing conception of Korean hip hop, which may be some kind of mess between It G Ma, that one Youtube ad that everyone saw once, Gangnam Style, and some subpar rappers you might've heard from any Kpop song (this is a generalization though, there are a few good ones out there). I have provided links for those who don't know what I'm talking about.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Before we get into rappers and producers, I think it'd be good to explain about the Korean rap show, Show Me the Money. Whether you like it or not, I'd say that it's become an inevitably large part of Korean hip hop culture--people tune into this thing every year and root on their faves. Many artists that become trendy on Korean music charts have appeared on the show to try to come out as the best rapper by the end of each season. Think of it as your Korean hip hop version of American idol--there are "producer teams" made up of already well-known rappers and beat producers who eventually narrow down the giant mass of people who try out and pick a few to mentor and create beats for. The teams do things like rap battles, team stages, solo stages, etc and one eventually comes out as the winner.

Rappers

Kid Milli [Indigo Music]- 3rd place winner in Show Me the Money777 (latest season). His unique flows and stylistic choices in his rap pulls people in. People have compared his album AI, THE PLAYLIST to Vince Staples' Big Fish Theory because of the strong electronic beats. Considered one of the trendiest rappers at the moment in both his rap style and his fashion; you'll see his fashion influence in the streets of Seoul.

Corporate Espionage

WHY DO FUCKBOIS HANG ON THE NET

IndiGO

Young B [Indigo Music]- 1st place winner of the high school version of Show Me the Money called High School Rapper. He's older now and he's good for his strong delivery. Personally I like him better on boom bap but he's been experimenting a lot. He just released a new album called Stranger.

In the Morning

wewantourmoneyback

Seoul

Jvcki Wai [Indigo Music]- Female cyberpunk rapper. She is definitely an acquired taste because of her high pitched and always autotuned voice, but she's made her way to the top, definitely one of very few female rappers who got this popular. I think she uses her autotune really well. Her latest album, Enchanted Propaganda, is an interesting concept album.

Anarchy

Enchanted Propaganda (let's put this out here, she can't dance)

Hyperreal (first two mins)

Giriboy [Just Music]- He's also worked with lots of electronic beats but experiments a ton as well. I'm thinking he influenced Kid Milli with this aspect, especially because they're in the same company. Also a very talented producer (which you can recognize from his producer stamp that goes "G R Boy"), Giriboy was actually on an earlier season of Show Me the Money and has shot to fame, even becoming a producer for the latest season. Super super versatile guy

The Burden (good example of his producing)

Attention Whore

Hogu

Blacknut [Just Music] - Totally wack guy. Craves attention but he's a good rapper. Listen to his song 100 that brazenly calls out 100 other Korean rappers (then apologizes at the end). It's his only song that matters

100

Swings [Just Music] - CEO of the overall music company (Just Music) who owns the music labels (Just Music, Indigo Music)that contain all artists from above. People are always on the fence on their opinion of him because he's the type to kinda go off the rails in stating his opinions (not as off the rails as Kanye though). Very respected in the hip hop community, however.

Bulldozer

Watch

Work Out (he lost weight at this time and got super cocky about it)

Bewhy - Winner of Show Me the Money 5. Currently an independent artist, has a super hungry rap style.

International Wave (with Talib Kweli)

Forever

Shalom

DPR LIVE [DPR]- Speaks English fluently and uses lots of English in his songs. Part of a collective called DPR (Dream Perfect Regime) that also includes his producer and videographer (who is AMAZING at music videos)

Know Me

Laputa

Please (with Dumbfoundead)

Simon Dominic [AOMG]- Known for his iconic song, Simon Dominic. Part of AOMG, Jay Park's label, which is super good at producing summery tracks. He used to be co-CEO until he stepped down recently due to stress.

Simon Dominic

Simon Says (with Pharoahe Monch)

Won & Only

Loco [AOMG] - Winner of Show Me the Money 1. Good at mellower tracks

Hold Me Tight

Summer Go Loco

Respect

Woo Wonjae [AOMG]- Show Me the Money 6 third place winner and a new addition to AOMG. Originally was super huge about depression rap because dude's been through shit but I think he's happier now in AOMG. His name is "Woo" on spotify so I don't really know what he goes by

Again

We Are

Phone

pH-1 [H1ghr Music] - H1ghr Music is a sublabel of AOMG. Got far with his sing-rap style in Show Me the Money 777. Good at making earworm songs

iffy

Donut

Homebody

Sik-k [H1ghr Music] - Got some smack for biting on Travis Scott's sound in some songs but eh

FLY

Party

Alcohol

Beenzino [1llionaire] - Someone to look out for especially since he just got off his military service. Super creative and kinda wack in a good way

Break

Life In Color

Time Travel

Dok2 [1llionaire] - 1llionaire's co-CEO. Korean, Spanish, Filipino guy who's also fluent in English. Best on trap

111%

Am I

Crazy

Changmo [Ambition Musik] - Ambition is a sublabel of 1llionaire. Brands himself as a child prodigy which is probably true due to his great talent in piano, which he uses a lot in his music

Maestro

Rockstar

One More Rollie

Those are probably some of the most popular ones in the game.

but there are SO many more that I feel bad for leaving out and also I don't want people in the comments bitching and being like "HEY YOU DIDN'T INCLUDE ______" which happened in the other two posts.

So here are others you really should check out if you like the above!:

The Quiett, Tiger JK, Bizzy, Yoon Mirae, Penomeco, punchnello, Loopy, Nafla, Dynamic Duo, Epik High, Paloalto, Huckleberry P, G2, Reddy, JUSTHIS, YunB, NO:EL, Lil Boi, HAON, EK, Superbee, Jeebanoff, BRADYSTREET, Ja Mezz, OLNL, Coogie, CJamm, Keem Hyo Eun, E SENS, Vinxen, Khundi Panda, Olltii, BILL STAX, Osshun Gum, Donutman, Rhythm Power, Junoflo, Double K, Flowsik, Nucksal, Deepflow, Don Mills, Hash Swan, KillaGramz, Balming Tiger, Basick

I am still definitely missing people... The Korean hip hop community has expanded a LOT. If you don't wanna listen to all of them, just let me know the type of songs or American artists that you like and I can recommend you some!

Side note: the Korean hip hop community is also very very integrated with the R&B community. There are some great Korean R&B artists I can recommend you, such as Dean, Colde, or Jooyoung. Just ask!

Producers to look out for (with examples)

Gray [AOMG] - he sings/raps too. Listen for producer tag "GRAY"

Late Night / Who You? / Drive

GroovyRoom [H1ghr Music] - Listen for "Groovy everywhere"

Sunday / XINDOSHI / NOAH

Cha Cha Malone [AOMG] - He's black and I don't think he's even fluent in Korean so idk how he ended up there but he's super talented. Listen for "I need a cha cha beat boy"

All I Wanna Do / Hangang / You Know

Code Kunst [AOMG] - Yeah AOMG has all the producers.... Good at vibey music

Good Day / Beside Me / Parachute

Primary

Mannequin / Baby / highfiVe

Others: Woogie, BOYCOLD, 0channel, Thurxday, Giriboy, Zico

spotify playlist of all songs linked above
