As a lot of you may have heard, this past Sunday, Brazil elected its new president, ex-military, far-right jackass, Jair Bolsonaro. As hiphop basically stands for everything that he's against, and members of the community are likely to be greatly affected and censored, I thought I'd share a couple songs with some standout quotes with you guys

Djonga:

Coming from the captial of the state of Minas Gerais, Djonga has been receiving a lot of success, attention, and praise both in and out of Brazil. A very serious and almost menacing rapper, Djonga mostly talks about the struggle of blacks in Brazil, especially in the infamous favela communites Brazil has unfortunately become known for

  • Esquimó, off his 2016 album "Heresia" (Heresy)

Criolo:

Rapper from São Paulo whos been releasing albums since 2006, raised in one of the cities favelas by parents coming from one of the poorest regions of the country, Criolo gradually became one of the most important rappers in the enormous city, allowing to further push his messages about the political climate, favela life, and the continued struggle of blacks in Brazil. Goes back and forth between traditional rap, to brazilian samba, and mixtures of both

The music video for this song is a little noisy, but I still linked it instead of the plain audio because I think it's really cool, and has a lot of allusions and insights to Brazil, things like the Museum in Rio that went up in flames in August, a flood that happened in an eastern city, and imagery like mosquitos (petroleum companies) sucking from the land

Translation: "The diamonds from Miami come with blood from Rwanda. Economic power, (with) cocaine in helicopters. Salary of a teacher: microscopic. School material from our paper, written with blood.

Translation: I'll stay herein the favela preaching peace, and (every pack of cigarettes makes another one dead/in the time to smoke a pack another person is killed ) and if one of us dies, to you it's joyous

Cyphers (assorted ):

While cyphers and posse cuts seem to become more rare every year in US hiphop, they're alive and well in Brasil, and are generally my favorite way to find new artists. Usually combining one or two big rappers, with one or two less popular ones, and then some new young artists. Usually more in line with something like the BET or XXL cyphers instead of label cyphers, the artists on the cyphers aren't always associated with eachother so you generally get a pretty diverse act every time. Lots of them are done as recurring series, and then some are just a one-off, usually focused on a specific event or region or something.

    Translation: "Shots fired from every side, new enemies and old alies. Hard to leave/escape this place, like a traffic jam, but I get through anyways like the motorcyles that split lanes. Asking death to not sharpen it's scythe, is the same as expecting your ex to call back in the middle of the night." -BK

  • Favela Vive 3 (The Favelas are Alive #3)

    Mano, os cana peida de subir de madrugada

    Sempre marca operação com a porta da creche lotada

    Mais uma mãe revoltada, uma pergunta sem resposta

    Como o policial não viu seu uniforme da escola?

    Vinícius é atingido com a mochila nas costas

    Como é que eu vou gritar que a 'Favela Vive' agora?

    Translation: "The cops are scared to enter at night, so they always do their operations when the schools are full. Another mom devasted, another question without an answer, how is it possible the cops didnt see his uniform? A little boy was shot, with his backpack on his back, so how can I say that the Favela is alive now? "-DK

  • Primavera Facista (Spring Facist)

This is the one that really made me want to put out this post, and in recent days has started getting censored already so I'll add backup links. But this one is called Spring Fascist in reference to Jair Bolsonaro winning the election. Before each verse, an audio clip of JB plays, and he's saying something awful in each one (these are all just from interview of him btw, not even leaked phone calls or something). These clips include: him actively advocating for torture, open homofobia (talking about how nobody would trust their kids around gays because they'll become gay too), calling blacks essentially useless and saying they have the same oprotunities as anyone else, and calling women inferior. Then after each clip, a rapper directly affected by the statements does a verse on it. For example, after the anti-LGBT clip, Axant comes in talking about how his sister is lesbian, and how she helped him learn to treat women properly and be a more caring open person etc. Then Dudu comes in after the sexist clip, and talks about all the extra struggles shes been through just because shes a woman, on top of all the other challenges facing favela communites.

Definitely harder to follow without a grasp of portuguese and more context of the climate here, but really powerful if you do, or put a little work in.

But Brazilian rap isn't only heavy political stuff. Some fight oppression with their rhetoric, and some fight it with indomitable spirit, so the rest of these are way more lighthearted :)

Since they're not as dependant on their lyrics, I wont bother with quotes from all of them

Rael:

Kind of on the line between being a rapper and a singer, but he's collabed with just about all the big rappers here so I think he belongs, as he's also probably my favorite of anyone on the list. Also from São Paulo, he was part of a rap group called Pentágono until 2012 when he decided to go solo. His music is generally an upbeat combination of Rap/HipHop, Samba, Jazz, and MPB (música popular brasileira). In 2016 he released his most successful album "Coisas do Meu Imaginário" (Things from My Imagination), containing both of these songs.

ConeCrew Diretoria:

Rap group made up by 6 guys from Rio de Janeiro that has seen pretty steady and significant popularity since 2011, but have been releasing music since 2006. While they're defintely more than just weed rap, it's definitely part of their image (to the point they even got a shout out from Snoop in the last vid lol). To me they kinda just represent the fun borderline comical aspects of rap of just rhyming and having fun on the mic, really awesome live shows too. Very active and passionate fans, and definitely a bit of their own brand

  • Meus Amigos Fazem Rima (My Friends Make Rhymes) - from their 2015 album Bonde da Madrugada

Matuê:

Brazil's answer to Lil Yachty/Lil Uzi, 22yo Matuê became the biggest star from the soundcloud/autotune wave here, following a similar trajectory to many of the similar artists in the states, he went from relative anonymity to headlining festivals in little over a year. Representing his label/collective 30PRAUM and also label/streetwear brand Pineapple Supply, he's got lots of backing and funding in the game, helping him get so popular so fast. While born in the northern city of Fortaleza, he was actually raised in Oakland, which is why I think he captures the american facetat aesthetic so well. While I dont think he'd be particulary notable as an american in the same lane, he's arguably the face of "brazilian trap", rapping in catchy autotuned melodies about sipping lean and wearing Supreme. I think it's a really cool parallel to see between the rap cultures of two different countries, especially given how the political climate has also largely been paralleled here (unfortunately). Yet to release an actual project but he's got plenty of songs out.

Thanks to those of you who went through this, really hope you found some new music or at least found some of the info interesting. As a half brasilian half american, I've only really started digging into modern brasilian music this year since I've been living here since June. Didnt mean to make this post so long, but I had a hard time thinking of what I should cut out of it lol. I've found so much great new music while also becoming even more immersed in the culture and language here, so I thought I'd share some of what I've been listening to and who's shows I've been attending since I got here. Im far from an expert on all of it, but if you guys have any questions or want to find some more brazilian artists let me know.

Also mods if theres anything wrong with this just lmk
