[DISCUSSION] Let’s talk about Mo Bamba, 2018’s most unlikely hit song.

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 11:15 AM PST

Currently, Mo Bamba is the #2 most streamed song on Spotify's Daily US charts (it was #1 before Ariana surprised dropped a single on Saturday night) and in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. It has been steadily climbing since September 8th, where it debuted at #82. It climbed every week after that except for the week of October 13th, where it dropped a few spots because of Lil Wayne's album drop.

If you've been to a party in the last few months, chances are you've heard this song. You may have seen videos of people going crazy to the now infamous drop of "fuck, shit, bitch" which has become synonymous with the song's success. If you somehow have escaped this track, give it a quick listen. You'll notice a few things - first of all, there's quite a lot of adlibs. Second of all, it's a bit odd that this is the hottest club banger of the year. Third of all, this sounds like nothing in rap right now.

To an untrained ear, you may think that this is just another dime-a-dozen trap hit. The instrumental isn't all that revolutionary, but it's not doing the heavy lifting here. But, spend some time with this track and its uniqueness becomes quickly apparent. First of all, Sheck Wes spends most of the track droning on, only switching up his flow for the brief and only verse. Yeah, I said that right - there's only one verse. The song structure on Mo Bamba is unlike anything I've seen in rap, and honestly, unlike most songs I've heard. Usually, pop songs adapt a Verse > Chorus > Verse > Chorus > Bridge > Chorus structure, although sometimes there's intros, sometimes there's pre and post-choruses, and sometimes the song starts on the chorus rather than the verse. Rap songs usually work similarly, although we usually get less bridges, more verses, and the occasional single verse or multiple verse tracks with no chorus. Regardless, there's a formula, and a good portion of tracks follow it. Not only does Mo Bamba refuse to follow this formula, it uses a song structure that I've never quite heard before - Chorus > Chorus > Verse > Chorus > Outro.

If that doesn't make much sense, here's something to help explain why this is so significant. Someone made a nifty site visually showing off some weird song structures in pop music, and I decided to use it for Mo Bamba. Here it is with adlibs and without adlibs. In comparison, here's the visualization for Future & Juice WRLD's Fine China and Drake's God's Plan. You'll immediately notice the latter two function a lot like some of the other pop songs, and that's to be expected. I would play around with other rap tracks and see the results. If this makes no sense, imagine the diagonal line as the progression of the track, and any dots off of the main line areas of repeated lines. You'll notice in the Future & Juice WRLD track, there's patterns of lines - this represents the choruses. On Mo Bamba, there's some semblance of pattern, but what's instantly apparent is that the instances of repetition are so scattered - that's because while Mo Bamba is nearly all chorus, the actual content of the choruses vary wildly. Sheck Wes carries the melody throughout the chorus but never really quite uses the same lyrics except in a few rare instances.

The song structure is a big part of what makes Mo Bamba tick, as the infectious chorus lends well to replayability, recognition, and familiarity. However, as I mentioned earlier, the defining moment of the track is the opening of the verse, a rabid cry of "fuck, shit, bitch!" What you might not know is this part was a happy accident - in a New York Times video on the creation of Mo Bamba, Daytrip admitted that this infamous line was the result of his laptop freezing as Sheck rapped over the beat. He reacted on the spot, and his laptop actually unfroze after his iconic adlib, and Sheck continued to rap as if nothing happened. In fact, the entire track was recorded in one go, and the only aspects of the song that were added afterwards were the adlibs. As a result, there's this rawness, a hurried and frenetic energy that surrounds Mo Bamba. It might be unexplainable, but it's become a rallying cry, a manifestation of aggression.

It may not be the case for everyone, but Mo Bamba is pure, unadulterated hype. I think it's honestly hard to evaluate this song unless you've seen it in action, either at a party, or if you're lucky enough to hear it performed live. It's rare to see such a hectic and unhinged song on the charts, let alone in the top ten, and it's a refreshing and exciting departure from some of the more traditional trap that has been dominating the charts. In the span of a few months, Mo Bamba has put Sheck Wes on the map, and the song likely hasn't even hit its peak.

What do you think? Will Mo Bamba be a sign of what's next to come for rap? Do you find this song as special as I do? Let me know what you think.

Madeintyo allegedly hit ex wife, distortedd

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 04:40 AM PST

On his wife's Instagram story she has been going on about a man hitting her and punching her in the face, after about an hour from the original posts, she posted a pic which directly exposed madeintyo. She also claimed that she "won" the fight. Can't post direct pic but I'll try to get a link. EDIT: here is a link to her post https://i.imgur.com/i23flzq.jpg Unfortunately she removed her other Instagram stories but the main one in still up Also forgot to mention this earlier, but on the first story she posted about this her entire face was really bruised so she definitely did hit by someone.
