Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

Today we'll be listening to Lead Poison by Elzhi

This album was selected by /u/cota760

Background:

Lead Poison is the third official solo album by American rapper Elzhi. It is the follow-up to his 2011 tribute project to the debut album of NaS, cleverly titled Elmatic. It was released on March 29th, 2016, and came on the heels of controversy, facing multiple delays and a successful Kickstarter that didn't follow suit with its promised contribution rewards. In this highly personal project, Elzhi touches upon the aftermath of his life after the passing of mentor and friend J. Dilla, depression, failed relationships and his constant ambitions to succeed in hip-hop.

GUIDE TO TRAP METAL

Posted: 05 May 2018 07:28 PM PDT

WHAT IS TRAP METAL?

Trap Metal is an explosive genre that combines elements of rap and metal together for an extremely energetic and blood pumping combination.

NOTABLE ARTISTS

ZillaKami - ZillaKami is an underground rap artist originating from New York. He is known for his striking rainbow grillz, extremely aggressive Slipknot/Nu-Metal inspired sound and his association with 6ix9ine, though they aren't friends anymore. His style is grimy and his guttural screaming voice is destined to make your head spin. He's bringing something completely new to hip-hop and he'll most likely blow up very soon due to the progressive rise of Trap Metal.

ZillaKami x SosMula - 33rd Blakk Glass

ZillaKami x SosMula - Shinners 13

ZillaKami x SosMula - Drop Dead

Cameronazi - Another New York native, Cameronazi, is an underground artist who used to play the guitar for his local band before transitioning into making Trap Metal. When he was asked about how he got into making Trap Metal, he responded with "I felt like I couldn't do it honestly, but at that time I was heavy into hardcore rock/punk rock so I knew if I was going to do music it was going to heavy influence that." His hardcode/punk influence is definitely shown in his style. Him and his brother '$ubjectz' came up with the term "Trap Metal" and since then its been the term used to group him and all of his contemporaries into one. Trap Metal to him is much more than just screaming into the mic over distorted beats. In his words, "Trap Metal to us is treated more as an art form. Like we take time into detail when it comes to making our songs. We layer a lot adding different tones of voices in each layer, emphasizing certain words, and also the best engineer $ubjectz goes through certain details like taking every breath/gasp from each verse. That's just a little of what we do when it comes to making a Trap Metal song. If you are going to make Trap Metal, treat it more as an artwork than just yelling and putting it out there." He's extremely serious about his craft and the genre; check him out.

Cameronazi x $ubjectz - SLITYAWRIST

Cameronazi x ZillaKami x $ubjectz - AREYOUREADYKIDS?

Cameronazi - LIVELIFEGIVENONE

XXXTENTACION - The Florida native, XXXTENTACION, rose to fame very quickly with the success of his song "Look At Me" and the "Free X" movement when he was in jail back in 2016. X is who popularized Trap Metal. X's Trap Metal material has an intentional lack of polish to it, relying heavy on distorted bass and rough mixing, which to X, makes the sound more genuine. X has noted Kurt Cobain, Three Days Grace & Papa Roach as being some of his biggest influences, which explains his incredibly raw, emo and aggressive sound. X is one of if not the first artist to ever truly delve into Trap Metal and consistently make music based around the genre. I'm sure most of you have already heard some of X's popular/recent material (17 & ?) but his older Trap Metal material is definitely worth checking out if you've never listened to it before.

XXXTENTACION - #ImSippinTeaInYoHood

XXXTENTACION - Yung Bratz

XXXTENTACION - Gnarly Bastard

Kamiyada - Kamiyada is known as the founder of the music collective 'Midnight Society' consisting of Fukkit, Rare Akuma, Original God, Yung Bambi, The Virus And Antidote, Swerzie, Zotiyac, Foreign Forest & Stry who all make or experiment with Trap Metal. Kamiyada's abnormally aggressive flow is the perfect addition to the heavy, raw and fast paced production that Trap Metal derives from. Him and the rest of his collective are all worth checking out.

Kamiyada - Damage Critical

Kamiyada - Killstreaks

Kamiyada - DIRTY DEMONS

Scarlxrd - Before the notorious mask, insanely hard hitting 808 driven production & hoarse/guttural voice that Scarlxrd is known for, Scar was a YouTube phenomenon who uploaded comedic child-friendly videos under his channel "TheMazziMaz." In 2014, he joined the band Myth City as their lead singer. Myth City was a hybrid band of Alternative Rock & Screamo based in the UK. In 2016, Scar left Myth City to focus on his solo career, changing his name to Scarlxrd and deleting all of his videos off his "TheMazziMaz" channel to create a new image for himself. His music under the name Scarlxrd essentially took the screamo element from his band Myth City and combined it with trap/hip-hop based production: making for some hardcore Trap Metal/Emo material. Scar's one of if not the absolute loudest and most aggressive Trap Metal based artists out there.

Scarlxrd - HEART ATTACK

Scarlxrd - FADED.

Scarlxrd - 6 FEET

Syringe (aka Sybyr) - Wisconsin based gothic rapper Syringe is an extremely unsettling and diluted artist who is not only proficient in Trap Metal, but in an immense class of genres ranging from R&B to Industrial Hip-Hop. Last year, he went missing for quite some time which led many people to believe that he was dead until thankfully he was found alive. He has terrible anxiety and that's what drove him to run away and seclude himself from social interaction; he was having panic attacks. His music is incredibly noisy and experimental, especially his Trap Metal material, which is quite hard to digest. It's often too messy or extreme for the average music listener. Syringe's screamo vocal style is downright haunting. His sound genuinely isn't accessible, but it's not intolerable, it just takes some getting used to. Syringe is one-of-a-kind man, definitely worth your time.

Syringe - If You See My Face Good Luck. God Bless

Syringe - Piss On The Kitchen Floor

Syringe - Shoot The Party

NOT TRAP METAL ARTISTS BUT ARTISTS WORTH MENTIONING/CHECKING OUT

Ghostemane - Ghostemane doesn't exactly make Trap Metal, but he does combine elements of Industrial Hip-Hop, Metal, Emo & Noise into one. Listen to Hexada for an example of that. He's an extremely diverse artist.

$uicideboy$ - Not Trap Metal, but they're just as heavy and aggressive. Drawing heavy influence from Three 6 Mafia, who they sample all the time. One of the two members, Ruby, was in a Punk/Metal band before joining forces with his cousin Scrim and forming the $uicideboy$. Their music has clear Metal influence. Check out their discography on Spotify.

PRXJEK - Another diverse artist, similar to X imo. He's best at making Trap Metal, but he has some solid R&B & Boom-Bap material as well. His vocals aren't as guttural or intense and he doesn't carry as much energy as some of the other Trap Metal artists on this list, but he's worth checking out if you enjoy the Trap Metal sound. His discography

King Yoself - King Yoself is super underground. His fanbase is small but he's growing. He has some absolutely insane material that's worth checking out. Honestly, he's one of the few artists on this list that's more on the Metal side than the Trap side. Listen to Misfortune & Peasants, Sheep. by him.

Bones - Bones is an underground legend who's pretty popular on this sub. He doesn't make much Screamo/Metal-esque music, but when he does, it's incredible. Bones has one of my favorite screaming voices. Listen to GladWeHaveAnUnderstanding & RestInPeace by him.

Craig Xen - Good friend of XXXTENTACION, who he's collabed with before. His energy is just as extreme and fast paced as X's at times. Him and X have a straight up Metal song together, listen to Crucify Thy Infant, Son of Whore. Also check out Death to He Who Crosses Me. Craig's voice is raspy as hell, perfect for this style.

OmenXIII - Omen's been compared to Bones many times, understandably so. Their flows are similar. Omen's music isn't that Metal-esque, but it's really dark and definitely on the heavier side. Listen to I Think It's Time That I Emerge & LED by him.

Let me know what y'all think of Trap Metal and who your favorite artist in the genre is. Do you see potential in the genre? I enjoyed making this for y'all and I hope y'all enjoy reading it! Thank you for your time!
