A few projects to look forward to this year Posted: 05 Jan 2018 04:18 PM PST 2018 may have just started but rumors of upcoming drops have been swirling for months. Beyond the hinted-at Kid Cudi and Kanye West album, new music from Earl Sweatshirt, Dave East's Paranoia 2 in a few weeks, CULTURE 2, and more, there's a lot of shit to look forward too already just a few days into the year. Beyond some of the more hyped up projects though, there is quite a bit of music that's already been announced or hinted at. This post is meant to bring some attention to these releases and hopefully expand some of yalls music preferences. Cleaned up the way I type normally too, more or less lol. Don Q - Don Season 2 Touting a Pusha T feature, Bronx rapper Don Q's forthcoming mixtape looks to take the game by storm. After gaining 250k downloads in the first 24 hours on his sophomore tape Corner Stories and solidifying his status as one of New York City's main up-and-coming acts, the Highbridge native's attitude is now focused on making a splash in the mainstream. "Trap Phone", a richly produced banger featuring fellow New York native Desiigner, appears as a statement of intent from Don. An exceptional ear for beats, technically skillful verses, and high status amongst the legends of the city has previously yielded success for artists like Nas, Fabolous, and Dave East. It's too early to say if Don will ever reach the heights of Loso or Nasty Nas, but his raw talent must be respected. From showing down Funk Flex on his own show to killing practically ever verse he's been on, a strong 2018 from the artist is a near-guarantee. Don Season 1.5, an EP/mixtape announced for this month, should only serve to solidify this point. Westside Gunn & Conway - Hall & Nash 2 Gunn and Conway are far from young artists, but they've been making moves like they're the next big thing. Inking a deal with Shady Records earlier last year the two have steadily risen through the ranks of the East Coast underground, now standing shoulder to shoulder with New York titans like Lloyd Banks and Alchemist. Hall & Nash, the first installment of the brothers' collaboration project, featured overwhelmingly grimy production and killer bars from both MCs. By-and-large however, the project seemed geared towards existing fans of the Buffalo rappers rather than new ones. Though it seemed Conway's debut album GOAT was meant to be the label's breakout record, some seemingly last minute changes botched the release date and left off a lot of the hyped up tracks. As a result, it is looking like Hall & Nash 2, already confirmed both artists, will take up the mantle instead. Boasting several alleged tracks with Anderson .Paak (including one with ScHoolboy Q as well), production from 9th Wonder and the budget of Shady/ Interscope behind them, successfully springboarding off the upcoming Westside Gunn solo album could give GxFR the proper push needed to introduce the name into mainstream conversations. With underground East Coast records securing higher and higher praise in hip-hop media–Roc Marciano's Rosebudd's Revenge was named as Rolling Stone's #10 rap album of 2017–it's not farfetched to say we could hear Conway on East Coast urban radio in a few months time. DJ Muggs & MF DOOM - DOOMUGGS Very little is known about this project beyond a singular cryptic Instagram post by Muggs, featuring a side by side of him and DOOM with half of their faces cut off. The Cypress Hill DJ teased the possible collaboration with the caption "đ·2018đ·#soulassassins #djmuggs #bnardartwork" a little before the turn of the year. Though releases with DOOM are never on any specific timetable, the amount of music released by him last year could be an indication for the future. The tragic passing of his teenage son late last year will likely affect any theorized drop date though. Given the track record DOOM has had with releases, especially recently (he was cut from the Adult Swim single series for allegedly sending AS old verses he claimed were freshly recorded), it is likely that this collab effort will end up similar to Prodigy & Conway's Hell on Earth or Westside Gunn and DOOM's WESTSIDEDOOM project from last year: a couple of tracks leaving fans wanting a hell of a lot more. Da$h & $uicideboy$ - WALK THE PLANK As last year cam to a close, the rumored collaboration album between some of New Jersey and Louisiana's grimiest artists looked slated for an early 2018 release. According to Da$h's IG live from November, the project is already complete and awaiting release. However, the close proximity to Da$h's latest tape LOOSESKREW (which I highly rec checking out), the pushback of I Don't Want To Die In New Orleans, and $crim's recent post on Instagram, fans can likely expect to wait some time before the project drops. The several [snippets]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulJs0Cs31fw) he's dropped in live streams though indicate that it'll almost certainly be as dope as expected. [link] [comments] |
A look at Spain's rising hip-hop scene. Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:47 AM PST Rels BThe chorus of Made In Taiwan, the ninth track in Rels B's debut, Boys Don't Cry, released in 2016, it's one of the best I have heard in any national song in years: the use of harmonies and a easy going, slow flow makes for a super-catchy hook that made the song famous. Rels B (Daniel Vidal, 1993) left his home being 15, and started to work in construction and as a bartender to fulfill his music career. In 2014 he released his debut EP Change or Die, and one year later in Mallorca, he would meet the producers Itchy & Buco, who he would release with another EP under the nick Flakk Daniel, Player Hater. Both were well received in the underground scene, and once again with Itchy & Buco he would release his debut album Boys Don't Cry. Rels usually raps about more topical themes, like love, parties and breakups, but what shines is the production: the instrumental of Fiesta en la Keli showcases his sound, a mix of soul and jazz with some beats all around, but more prominently the trumpet that is all around the song. Songs to listen to:
El GuinchoEl Guincho (Pablo DĂaz-Reixa DĂaz, 1983) has been doing music for 12 years. 12 years is a quite long time, and through them he has gone from the clash of world music of FolĂas in 2006, to the focus on tropical music and afrobeat of Alegranza in 2007, to the indie-pop of Pop Negro in 2010, to the heavily-autotuned, electric rap of Hiperasia in 2016. What connected all these works was the love for hip-hop production, since he worked with several hip-hop producers. Hiperasia isn't his best piece of work, at least in my opinion, but it's the most connected to hip-hop: Guincho does the switch from singing to rapping, and the use of kicks, 808s and the usual hip-hop production is much easier to see. Songs to listen to:
C. TanganaOften compared to Drake, C. Tangana (AntĂłn Ălvarez, 1990) is the new superstar of rap. If someone had a victory lap in 2017, that was him. Although he started rapping with a very early mixtape called Elescrema in 2006 being barely 16 years old, and followed it with another mixtape, EGO, he stepped down from music for a while to continue his studies until his official, self-titled debut album, C. Tangana. In 2012 he released a follow-up, LOVE's, and gained a fame he was uncomfortable with. That way, he took another break for music for three years, until he took some beats american rappers had used and released a mixtape/EP, 10/15, which finally gave him national fame. Finally and after some promo singles/loosies in 2016 like Los chikos de madriz, LlĂĄmame mĂĄs tarde and Antes de morirme (both collaborations with the singer RosalĂa, who I also wrote about here) and PersiguiĂ©ndonos, he signed with Sony and released Ădolo, widely considered his best work. Songs to listen to:
Bad GyalIf C. Tangana was the spanish Drake, Bad Gyal (Alba Farelo, 1997) is the spanish Rihanna. It's not like she tries to hide it, her first upload to YouTube was a version of Work, PAI. In late 2016 she would release her first full-length work, Slow Wine Mixtape, which is perfectly described by its name: a slow, torrid dance. Through the mixtape one can see she isn't a generic rapper, and while most of the beat has its heart in Atlanta, Bad Gyal looks more like a girl from Kingston: there is a lot of dancehall and reggae. One of the best things of Bad Gyal is how unusual are her topics: she doesn't sing about men or being rich, as someone would expect from a female rapper: she is more independent (stands out IDAPANDEN, a song about her feminist views) and her love stories are more costumbrist, like in Mercadona, where she tells a story about finding someone in Mercadona, a chain of supermarkets, and falling in love. What shines the most in her music though are her chorus: the autotuned hooks drill your head and stay there for days, being impossible not to whistle them. Songs to listen to:
Gata CattanaGata Cattana (Ana Isabel GarcĂa Llorente, 1991) had one of the most promising careers in hip-hop. Sadly, she died in March 2017 from a anaphylactic shock, leaving the release of her debut album, Banzai, in the air. She had released two EPs in 2013 and 2015, Los Siete Contra Tebas and Anclas, and a mixtape of loosies in 2016, InĂ©ditos 2015. All of these releases had built a huge hype around this rapper, who also was artist, poetess and political scientist, apart from LGBT and feminist activist, and in short became one of the most hyped up artist of 2017. Her topics, mostly biographic stories, stood out for the use of stylistic devices like politics (she was anti-globalization, and a big activist), spoken-word poetry, classical culture (Old Greece and Egypt) or even philosophy (the topic of existentialism and death is constant in Banzai, an uncanny prediction). The finishing of Banzai was carried by her family and her producer D. Unison. The choice of Banzai as a title it's very interesting, because in japanese it means 'ten thousand years'. She said it in an interview weeks before her death: When I get tired of rapping, I'll be making blues records. And when I get tired of the blues, I'll write a book. And when it's over, I'll give classes to kids. That shows who Gata Cattana really was. Instead of giving out songs to listen to, this time I'll just link Banzai and if in any case someone wants to listen to the single, also called Banzai, here it is. [link] [comments] |
