I think most of the people who were going to follow my blog would have done so already, but still if you want to keep up with Toronto rap, you can check out The6Track on: Website/ Twitter/ Soundcloud/ Instagram

[DISCUSSION] HHH curated tour of Los Angeles?

Posted: 04 Feb 2017 05:31 PM PST

I've lived in LA my entire life and love listening to geographically relevant music whenever I'm in a certain area, ie listening to No More Parties in LA while driving down Mulholland Drive (sans barricades, of course), Sweet Life while cruising through Ladera Heights, or bumping Illmatic while going through Queens.

LA is such a significant city to hip hop that I was thinking - what if we collaboratively put together a playlist with lots of classic and new LA centric music and then come up with some route around Los Angeles that hit all of the places mentioned? It would be a 2 or 3 hour directed tour around LA whose entire purpose was to cover (in brief) hip hops significance in Los Angeles.

Ie, start in Downtown, go through Compton (Compton by Kendrick Lamar, a bunch of NWA stuff), then Hawthorne/El Segundo (Left My Wallet in El Segundo), to LAX, then Ladera Heights, to Beverly Hills, back to Santa Monica, up to Malibu, and then back in some way. This is obviously very abstract.

What do you guys think? What tracks and locations would be good to add? If this worked out, we could definitely hit other cities like NYC (inc'l Flatbush, etc) and other places. Might be really neat.

Rappers to Watch From Every State in 2017 - NM, DE, CA, MT, KY

Posted: 04 Feb 2017 09:49 AM PST

Hey everyone, last part of this project for a while probably, going to purge some of the trash rap I had to listen to to find these 50 people from my head.

Who: Wake Self
SoundCloud
Age: pretty old
Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Recent Projects: Malala (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

Coming out of another state many Americans forget about is Wake Self, one of the main driving points in the Albuquerque rap scene over the last decade. He's been around for a while but is just now getting his recognition, with his songs and albums finally hitting over 1-10 thousand views consistently. His relaxed delivery and deep voice work well with his mellow, politically themed sound.

The jazz and soul influences are very clear in Wake's music, and that can be seen from his work with local soul artist Miles Bonny (who, if you're into that type of music, definitely check out). You'll see a good deal of piano and slower beats in his music that allow him space to tell a story or make a point. You won't find him out talking about picking up hoes or getting fucked up on the weekends, but you also won't find him preaching with the condescending tone you see out of artists like Hopsin, etc. I'd compare him to another nearby Southwest artist, Sincerely Collins, in terms of style. Sincerely is a bit more energetic in both delivery and production, but there is definitely a similarity in message and overall tone of the two. The Southwest is an area that is actually surprising ubiquitous in terms of the sound of rappers that are getting recognition right now (at least, from an outside perspective).

Wake Self has been in the game long enough to know how difficult it is to be moving up on the scene. This all being said, political rap is his game, and the current climate in America is definitely giving him plenty of material to write about. I'm sure y'all dukes will be seeing his name in the news soon with a political rap piece soon. He's already done a couple of tours around America and Europe and just hasn't made it on a huge scene yet. I'd look for him to start approaching his state on a bigger scale this year.

Who: Caedo
SoundCloud
Age:
Location: Newport, Delaware
Recent Projects: N/A

Songs to Check Out:

Shouts out to whoever from HHH recommended me this guy because you saved this spot from being some real ass dudes coming out of DE. Enter Caedo, the artist who sounds like he listens exclusively to XXXTENTACION and People's Temple tapes. This man is aggressive and alternative for y'all. This one is probably the most out there artist in this project, but I hope one of y'all is about this man.

You can tell this guy has some faux anger issues too, with son having like 6 songs on spotify and 2 of them are diss tracks to an artist I ain't ever heard of. I can't even figure out what this man did to set him off in the first place except maybe call him an XXX wannabe. I'm not mad though, he made some aight shit back, but more importantly his comments on this soundcloud has me fucking dying. Lil Tracy really got those bootygoons after Caedo.

Besides the drama, Caedo is going to have that gritty, industrial style sound familiar to those fans of Death Grips, ZelooperZ, XXX, etc. He also had some brooding sort of music like "Stardust". Honestly, he really is way more like XXX than he wants to say he is. He's got a lot of edge to his lyrics and sound and if you hate XXX's fanbase you probably won't love this guy's either. His aesthetic is unsettling as fuck and I think he intentionally dyed his hair to look like the Aurora shooter. All of that is being said to say this: this man is probably gonna be a known entity in 2017. If it isn't for music, I could see it being for violence of some sort. Regardless, since XXX can't seem to stay out of trouble, this dude seems like someone to fill the spot. His production is a little weak and doesn't match the energy of XXX just yet, but as he continues to grow I'm sure he'll have some better choices of beats. Keep an eye out for the name in 2017.

Who: KR
SoundCloud
Age: 21
Location: Los Angeles, California
Recent Projects:
It Could Happen (2016)
And It Begins (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

I could have done 50 write-ups about Cali individually; it was tough narrowing it down to just one with all of the talent. I ended up deciding on KR, mostly because he's being sought after by the biggest record labels in the game right now. This makes me think he may be on his way to having a huge 2017. While his popularity probably dipped down about a year ago, I would expect to see a big resurgence soon.

Two years ago KR was quoted as saying that he liked to confuse his fans. That may have been true back then, but KR's discography is much more consistent in terms of sound now. The songs I chose show the range of his portfolio, but expect much more of his music now to sound like "Complicated". You can see the influence from people like PND, Jeremih, and Bryson Tiller in his sound, the composition of his music videos, and even his sense of style over the last few years, for better or worse. More melodies and range in singing rather than rapping, a lot of the happy sounds he used to be putting out are gone. Not entirely, obviously, considering the majority of his discography has been made in the last year or so. It's like his music fell in love at 19 and got it's heart broken somewhere around 20.

It Could Happen is KR's debut album, and with the similarity between it and And It Begins, an LP he released earlier in the year, I think he's begun to really find his lane in hip hop. And it got him a top 20 album on itunes for a little bit. Look out for him in the new year, and there's some buzz that you'll see him sporting the owl within the next few months.

Who: Poetic Intelligence
SoundCloud
Age: 19 – Late Twenties
Location: Billings, Montana
Recent Projects: IVOVI [2015] (Collaborative, many individual)

Songs to Check Out:

I thought Montana was going to be one of the hardest states to pick an artist for, but I thought it would be for lack of talent, not abundance of it. Enter: Poetic Intelligence. Not so much a rap group as much of a collection of Billings artists who work together occasionally. They all have their own individual careers and have their own success, but it was just too hard to pick one of them. So I figured I wouldn't.

You'll see a decent variety in sound of this collective, but not so different that they don't work well together. You'll see Preston Wayne and Chez sound similar to each other, but still work well together on a track. You'll see Stormy Knight has a more reggae sound to him than these two (and a voice that in no way aligns with what you'd think looking at him), but ties together the artists of the group well. There are a good amount of artists in this collective, but they find ways to get together and work on albums together, as seen with IVOVI. You'll also often catch them performing either together or just at the same shows, and they definitely seem to look out for each other.

As a whole you can see the pop influences on Montana similar to how they were for Idaho. These two states have done well at keeping up with the current trends in music and continuing them. There is a surprisingly big hip hop scene coming out of Billings, and it looks like the Poetic Fam collective is going to be at the forefront of it. While the most classic side of hip-hop may be ruling the more local and underground hip-hop scenes around Billings, these guys are going to be the ones to make moves. Many of them have already opened up for some acts a little bigger than themselves, CunningLynguists, MosDef, etc. Look for them to start vying for a bigger name in the Midwest, and to start tapping into the biggest markets of Seattle and Minneapolis in the upcoming year.

Who: James Lindsay aka JaLin Roze
SoundCloud
Age:
Location: Louisville, Kentucky
Recent Projects: Same Sky (2017)

Songs to Check Out:

Wanting to end this project on a good note, I had to go for one of the guys I'm most excited about this year…period. Better than the "alternative" rappers out of KY, James Lindsey (formerly JaLin Roze), has undergone a rebirth as an artist but is continuing to produce excellent music. His recent project, Same Sky, started off the year to a good start, and is not a bad piece at all to attach to his brand new moniker.

If you are a fan of MOTM-era Kid Cudi, Theophilus London, Goldlink, Chiddy Bang, and Lupe Fiasco, this is your man. His production features a decent amount of electronic sounds – I'm not sure if soundcloud auto-picks songs that autoplay but Odesza plays after Lindsey – a good amount of claps and hi-hats, vocal sampling; the production really is similar to Theophilus London's most recent project Vibes or of Chiddy Bang's Swelly Express. His execution is stellar on the songs with more fast paced tempos, although occasionally falls slightly short on the slower songs like "8-Ball". I want to chalk this up to him still shaking some rust off, because this wasn't present in his older projects.

James Lindsey, at least from what I can tell, seems very connected in the art community in Louisville, gaining massive support from local artists, news stations, and city leaders alike. You can tell that he appreciates all kinds of art and draws similarities of deM atlaS to me in the sort of role he plays in Louisville. His return to music has been welcomed with the warmest of returns, and I think 2017 could put him on a big stage. It would be a shame to not see him catch a feature with a bigger artist this year, because he truly deserves the attention. I look forward to seeing what else he can come up with in 2017, and know Same Sky is one of those albums that's going to stay in my rotation for a long time.

Got an interview with Correy Parks this week, the rapper to watch from OH. If you guys are interested, here's the link to read it.
