[DISCUSSION] Westside Gunn - FLYGOD (5 years later)

Posted: 10 Mar 2021 09:21 PM PST

AYO!

With 3 mixtapes from the Hitler Wears Hermes series deep, 2 collaborative mixtapes out (Hall & Nash with Conway (2015) and Griselda Ghost with Conway and Big Ghost (2015)) and an EP already in rotation (Roses are Red… So is Blood, (2016)), Buffalo's own Westside Gunn releases on March 11, 2016 his debut studio album, FLYGOD, through his own record label, Griselda Records.

The album includes guest appearances from Action Bronson, Benny the Butcher, Bro AA Rashid, Chase Deniro, Conway the Machine, Danny Brown, DJ Q-Bert, Keisha Plum, Mach-Hommy, Meyhem Lauren, Roc Marciano, Skyzoo, and Your Old Droog. The album's beats are produced by Daringer, The Alchemist, Apollo Brown, Camouflage Monk, Roc Marciano, Statik Selektah, and Tha God Fahim.

"A man with upper class taste and a lower class upbringing, Westside Gunn has never been shy to blur the lines between stardom and struggle. He will praise the name of the lord wearing the finest silks this side of the hemisphere, and a Gucci cancer-awareness bracelet dripping in jewels, only to have to drive-by a block 30 minutes later. It's not a direct concept album, but it accidentally becomes one in the process of a front-to-end listen, bouncing between luxury and grit for nearly an hour." – Rollo_P

[SERIOUS] New Victim Claims She Was ‘Drugged and Trafficked’ by T.I. and Tiny, Lawyer Says

Posted: 10 Mar 2021 01:05 PM PST

Vulture

Another woman has joined the victims accusing rapper T.I. and his wife Tiny Harris of sexual assault, abuse, and drugging. Lawyer Tyrone A. Blackburn told Vulture he is now representing "a survivor who was drugged and trafficked by [T.I. and Tiny] in Nevada, California, and Florida over three days." Blackburn previously sent letters to offices in California and Georgia calling for criminal investigations into T.I. (born Clifford Harris) and Tiny (born Tameka Cottle) on behalf of 11 initial victims. Since sending those letters, Blackburn has now spoken to six new victims, he said in an interview with the Daily Beast published March 9; only one of those victims, the new trafficking accuser, retained Blackburn, his representative confirmed to Vulture. "All she wants is justice, and we intend to fight until she gets it," Blackburn added in an email. A lawyer for T.I. and Tiny told Vulture his clients "continue to deny in the strongest possible terms these scurrilous and unsubstantiated accusations."

Blackburn sent the letters in Georgia and California on February 19, before speaking to the New York Times about his clients' allegations on February 28. In the letters, Blackburn described "eerily similar events of sexual abuse, forced ingestion of illegal narcotics, kidnapping, terroristic threats, and false imprisonment," with victims including a 17-year-old intern to T.I. and Tiny's studio and an Air Force veteran. T.I. and Tiny denied the allegations through their lawyer at the time, who called them "unsubstantiated and baseless." Blackburn told the Beast he has had conversations with two offices about his clients' allegations. "If I was a prosecutor, I'd have brought charges already," he said.

The new victim marks the first time Blackburn has accused T.I. and Tiny of "trafficking," and also expands their allegations into Nevada, after his letters previously referenced Florida along with Georgia and California. In the email to Vulture, Blackburn called the Harrises "a cancer in the community," going on to say, "it is high time that law enforcement puts an end to their reign of terror."

Steve Sadow, the lawyer for T.I. and Tiny, repeated his previous statement that the claims would not manifest into charges upon being investigated. "We await Blackburn exposing his anonymous accusers to the light of day, by revealing their names, so we will be in a position to confront their allegations," Sadow told Vulture. "By Blackburn choosing instead to misuse the media for his own publicity and hiding the identities of his clients from the public and us, he makes it impossible for us to do so now."

In addition to the victims represented by Blackburn, dozens of victims began to accuse T.I. and Tiny of sexual assault, abuse, and drugging in late January on Instagram. Sabrina Peterson collected those allegations on her Instagram after she first accused T.I. of once holding her at gunpoint. Peterson, also co-represented by Blackburn, has brought a defamation suit against T.I. and Tiny over their denials of her claims; through a separate lawyer, T.I. and Tiny also denied making any defamatory statements.

Inside California’s new era of rap

Posted: 10 Mar 2021 04:45 PM PST

California will always be known for the gangsta rap and g-funk from the 90s, but little does the world know of the massively underrated scene coming out of Cali right now. Obviously i cant fit everybody thats hot on this list, but ill try my best

Drakeo the Ruler is without a doubt the hottest in the state right now. They were tryna give him life but he recently got freed a few months ago. He just got a Drake feature but i dont think that even cracks his top 20 best songs. I cant put too much songs because honestly drakeo could have his whole own post but here are a few. With features on the way from a lot of big artists, the only way is up now for Drakeo.

Drakeo The Ruler - Too Icey

Drakeo the Ruler - Impatient Freestyle

Drakeo The Ruler - Mr Everything

If Drakeo's the hottest in Cali, then no doubt Bris was a close second. Although he tragically got gunned down in June of 2020, hes still making noise and getting views. Quite possibly the best rapper out of Sacramento since Mozzy, ive never heard another rapper with a flow or energy similar to bris. Truly one of a kind. The majority of his discography is hard but heres just a few of his slaps.

Bris- Panhandling

Bris- Mayhem

EBK Young Joc x Bris x Armani Depaul - Jokes Up

Bris - Need Hammy Bris - First 42 Hour Freestyle

Zaybang is one of the better known rappers coming out of cali right now so is his frequent collaborator Lil Bean. More of a singy type vibe then the other rappers on this list but still hard.

Zaybang - No Relations

Lil Bean - Vital

Lil Bean - Down 2 Ride

EBK Hotboiiz are a rap group coming out of Southeast Stockton. Although their pretty good as a group, I feel like 2-3 of them are levels above the rest.

EBK Young Joc - Do That One Dance

Young Slo-Be ft. Ebk Young Joc, Ebk Juvie, and Bris - This Aint Nun New

Ebk JaayBo - 2100

Mac J ft Young SloBe, EBK Young Joc- Minswell

Young SloBe ft Ebk Trey B, Ebk Young Joc - 2100 Shell Kases

Peysoh is a relatively new rapper coming out of Maywood, LA, California. At only 17 he is the youngest rapper on this list and also one of the fastest rising.

Peysoh - Life I Live

Peysoh - 6Block

Dsteez is yet another rapper from Sacramento with bars.

Dsteez - Oops

Dsteez- Im Back

Dsteez ft. Mo3 - Wake the City up

If gangsta rap had a baby in 2021 it would be Uzzy Marcus. Although very widely hated because of his beef with Bris theres no denying he goes hard.

Uzzy Marcus - 42k

Uzzy Marcus - 7.62s

Uzzy Marcus - D.O.A

Part 2 coming soon

[DISCUSSION] King Von - LeVon James (One Year Later)

Posted: 10 Mar 2021 06:32 PM PST

Levon James is a retail mixtape by American rapper King Von from Chicago. It was released through Only the Family Entertainment/Empire on March 6, 2020. Executively produced by Chopsquad DJ, it features guest appearances from Lil Durk, Booka600, G Herbo, NLE Choppa, Tee Grizzley, YNW Melly and Yungeen Ace. The project peaked at number 40 on the Billboard 200.

This is going to get slept on, Von is fire.

Damnnnn I'm only at the first track and that's fucking fireeeeee brooo i knew he gor potential but damn

The cover lmfao

3 A.M. is fireee

Durk sounds so smooth on Down Me

not really fucking with the YNW feature though

Idk that "light you up like sketchers" line is kind of hard. Honestly thought von was the weak link on that track. He doesn't fit that vibe

Was wondering if this was even gonna make the front page lmao. People on this shit don't even listen to Durk but let's get it

He definitely improved with this project

Yea this hard

Madvillain Interview (2014) - DOOM crashes a Madlib interview w/ Audio

Posted: 10 Mar 2021 02:42 PM PST

http://www.bonafidemag.com/cover-story-madlib-interview/

^ Link has both the full interview text and the 46 min of audio. The original issue of the mag was published July 2014.

http://www.bonafidemag.com/magazine/bonafide-magazine-09/

Sobering quote from highlighted in the magazine.

"There's gonna' be Madvillain records for years, as long as I can stay alive." - DOOM

Also super interesting to hear the very beginnings of Madlib's relationship with Freddie Gibbs. Piñata came out in March 2014. You can hear DOOM joke about being a "fly on the wall" when Madlib is asked about Gibbs. To me this does give the interview a genuine feeling that he didn't know DOOM was coming. Since he goes from asking about Gibbs to asking about the Jaylib project and you can tell he feels weird asking about them with DOOM there.

Edit - Yes it becomes obvious that DOOM showed up to eat oysters lmao

Hype Tuesday: Post songs by artists that haven't gotten more than 50 upvotes on HHH - March 09, 2021

Posted: 09 Mar 2021 07:30 AM PST

Rules

Artists qualify if they're never gotten 50 or more upvotes on /r/HipHopHeads (counting features)

Formatting:

>Artist - Title

>Description: no character minimum but some things that might be good to include: where the rapper is from, what subgenres they might fall into, have cosigns they might have, what their influences are, who they sound like.

Example:

>Aaron May - Let Go

>18 year old Houston Rapper, biggest influences are J Cole and Nas.

Heavily recommended: If you post a song, listen to another song and comment on it. Otherwise this thing doesn't really work that well.

Feel free to add any feedback on what could make these threads better.

[DISCUSSION} 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne - ColleGrove (5 Years Later)

Posted: 09 Mar 2021 04:31 PM PST

ColleGrove is the third studio album by American hip hop recording artist 2 Chainz. It was released on March 4, 2016, by Def Jam Recordings. The album was originally a collaborative effort between 2 Chainz and fellow American rapper Lil Wayne, but due to his record label issues, only 2 Chainz was credited as the primary artist.

The album includes production from several high-profile record producers; such as Southside, Mike Will Made It, TM88, Infamous, Zaytoven, Lil' C, Metro Boomin, Ben Billions and London on da Track, among others. ColleGrove received generally positive reviews from critics and it debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart. A sequel, ColleGrove 2 is set for release in 2021.

Background

ColleGrove was initially a duet album between Southern hip hop recording artists 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne, however, because of Wayne's label issues, which had prevented him from releasing collaborative efforts in the past, such as I Can't Feel My Face with Juelz Santana, Best of Young Worlds with Lloyd, He Rap, He Sing with T-Pain and more, this album does not credit Wayne as a primary artist. Although it could not be released in conjunction with their respective record labels, 2 Chainz took it upon himself to release the album as his latest solo project through Def Jam Recordings. Instead, Wayne appeared as a "featured artist", courtesy of Cash Money Records, which meant that the project would not count towards Wayne's contractual obligation with Cash Money Records. 2 Chainz would later refer to this album in several interviews as a "tribute" to Lil Wayne.

The album's title is a portmanteau of 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne's respective hometowns. 2 Chainz is from College Park, Georgia, while Wayne hails from Hollygrove, a neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana. On December 28, 2015, in an interview with Forbes, 2 Chainz spoke on album, saying "As far as the ColleGrove project, I really feel like the music is tight and accessible. Wayne has always been one of my favorite rappers. We're just doing some mixing and trying to grind up. Just know that ColleGrove is coming very soon, and it's going to be filled with entertainment bars, great sounds, great vibes."

Top Comments in Release Thread

It's listed as 2 Chainz and only Def Jam, not Cash Money. Wayne is listed as a feature artist on each song. Looks like Wayne is still having trouble getting clearance from Cash Money/Birdman and this is a work around. I guess he's allowed to do features.

"Call me trill cosby, I'll spike my own beverage."

I missed you Chainz

New Kendrick and this? What the fuck is going on tonight

What the fuck right now?

Inb4 Views drops and we all die

thought it was gonna be a collab album like what drake and future did? ain't mad tho this is flames.

damn this sub really loves kendrick , fucking 2000 comments while this is at 200+ ,

Damn Wayne is sounding good so far

Top Comments in Pitchfork Review Thread

I didn't think wayne was that bad on this at all. in fact, i thought this was the best wayne sounded in a long time. 2 Chainz brought it out in him, the beats were good to great, and 2 Chainz was entertaining as always. I agree though, about a 7/10. Nice contrast to the rest of the music that's come out recently, and just in time for the weather to get warmer.

A couple things about this review.

  1. Not sure reviewer knows that the hook to "Gotta Lotta" is basically an interpolation of "Scat Man". If they did, wouldn't have called it a "nursery rhyme hook" - would have referenced the actual source.

  2. What the hell does "2 Chainz's enviable respect for Wayne" mean? How is the respect one holds for somebody else enviable? That was just weird, and not sure the author really knows the meaning of the word "enviable".

  3. This Pitchfork review, imo, suffers from what a lot of rap reviews on the site do: the fact that the author doesn't seem to know much about rap, or to actually like rap in general, other than the hot new thing. At least three times the author implies that saying kind of off the wall things is what is important. An example of phrases used to positively describe a rapper or their lines in the review:

"head scratching non sequitors" "freaky one liners" "zinger king" "outlandishness" "delirious"

I think it's a pretty accurate score, still a bit inflated imo. It was an ok project, nothing interesting or memorable for me

Underrated Tity Boi/Wayne track: Real as They Come. Just got thrown on some mixtapes and out there as an internet loosie with no proper release.

you can predict these p4k scores before even clicking the link based on who they are reviewing.

RYM Review

Underrated Collab Album
A budding 2 Chainz mixed with a solid Wayne results in a pretty good collab project that is scarcely mentioned. The production is good but the real highlight is the rapping. While Chainz would release his magnum opus only a year later, he still raps pretty well on here, bringing the goofiness and bigger-than-life caricature that I very much love from him. Both talents shine on Bounce as it encapsulates the unpredictable and free-flowing nature of both, especially Wayne. The solo 2 Chainz tracks are weaker than the ones when both are present (except for Watch Out). A feature or two would have been nice but the two manage to keep the listener's attention for most of the project. Collegrove is a collab project done right, playing into the strong suits of both rappers without being overly long.

Final Verdict: Definitely a sleeper in both artists's discographies. Not the most essential, but hard to look past

[DISCUSSION] Denzel Curry - Imperial (5 Years Later)

Posted: 09 Mar 2021 01:46 PM PST

Imperial is the second studio album by American rapper Denzel Curry. It was released and made available for free download and streaming on SoundCloud on March 9, 2016, then re-released later on Spotify as the deluxe version on October 14, 2016.[1][2] The album features guest appearances from Rick Ross, Joey Bada$$, Twelve'len and Nell. The album was supported by the single: "Knotty Head" featuring Rick Ross.

Imperial received critical acclaim. Stereogum described the album as "a hazy, gurgling rap record that's clearly the work of an active mind".[8]

Tracklist:
1. ULT
2. Gook
3. Sick & Tired
4. Knotty Head (Ft. Rick Ross)
5. Narcotics (replaced by Me Now on streaming)
6. Story: No Title
7. Pure Enough (replaced by This Life on streaming)
8. Zenith (Ft. Joey Bada$$)
9. This Life
10. If Tomorrow's Not Here (Ft. Twelve'len)

Questions:
Favorite songs?
Least favorite songs?
Where do you rank this on Denzel's discography?
How has it aged?
Where do you rank this in the best albums of 2016 (if you do)?
Do you think this was a step-up lyric and production-wise from his previous work?

Cyhi the Prynce on Grabbing His Gun Before His Car Got Shot Up & Flipped Over (Part 1)

Cyhi the Prynce sat down for yet another VladTV interview, and he detailed a recent event in Atlanta, where he was chased and shot at by a group of people in a Maserati. He explained that he was on his way to an event when he noticed the Maserati following him, and when he tried to evade them, the car got more agressive, including a highway chase. CyHi then spoke about crashing his SUV while trying to escape the car, and he was thankfully able to escape through his busted sunroof. Witnesses told police that two people got out of the Maserati and shot at Cyhi's SUV, while Cyhi was able to get far enough away from the area where they couldn't find him. Cyhi then revealed that he spoke to police on the scene, who told him that it was "open season" on all rappers. To hear more, hit the above clip.

Cyhi the Prynce on Gangsters He Knows Offering to Get the Guys who Tried to Kill Him (Part 2)

Cyhi revealed that he was trying to think of what would lead someone to try and kill him, and he added that he questioned if his past in the streets was catching up with him. He then explained that a lot of people are making money in Atlanta, which has led to a lot of robberies and violence in the city. To hear more, including Cyhi having paranoia without closure, hit the above clip.

Cyhi Details Making "Sicko Mode" w/ Travis Scott, "Famous" w/ Kanye, Never Signed to Kanye (Part 4)

In this clip, Cyhi the Prynce started off by explaining that he was never signed to Kanye's GOOD Music label, and he added that most people suspected that he was because he has worked with Kanye and associated acts for a long time. Cyhi then spoke about his process for working with Kanye on songs, and he added that he never wants to create a misconception that he writes songs for Kanye. He explained that he will take mental notes of what Kanye is saying in the studio, along with the beats that he's playing, and they'll come up with a final product along the way. After calling Kanye the Michael Jackson of this generation, Cyhi also detailed working with Travis Scott, including on "Sicko Mode," which he says was similar to working with Kanye. To hear more, hit the above clip.

He then spoke about Kanye's announcement to only focus on Christian music, including his latest project, "Jesus is King." Cyhi then revealed that Kanye's "Donda" album is currently on hold while he works out his divorce with Kim Kardashian, which Cyhi says he hopes doesn't happen and the couple are able to work things out. Elsewhere in the interview, Cyhi spoke about Kanye facing backlash for wearing a MAGA hat and supporting Trump, and Cyhi explained that Kanye was friends with Trump before he became president. Cyhi also addressed Kanye's comments about Harriet Tubman and slavery, which you can hear more about above.

Cyhi the Prynce: Kanye Has Access to Classified Info, Flies in World Leaders on Private Jet (Part 6)

In this clip, Cyhi the Prynce spoke about Kanye facing backlash for wearing a MAGA hat and supporting Trump. Cyhi explained that Kanye was friends with Trump before he became president. Cyhi also addressed Kanye's comments about Harriet Tubman and slavery, which you can hear more about above.

EDIT:

Cyhi the Prynce: I Saw Kanye's Family & Friends Cuss Him Out over Running for President (Part 7)

In this clip, Cyhi the Prynce opened up about Kanye running for president in 2020, and he revealed that Kanye had no support from friends or family. Cyhi added that he watched people close to Kanye cuss him out over his decision to run. He then debated with DJ Vlad about Kanye's fans being mostly Democratic, and Cyhi stated that he sees mainly white people at most rap shows, including his and Kanye's, and there's no way that most of them are Democrats. Moving along, Cyhi addressed Kanye's controversial comments about slavery, which led to a discussion of Black history and slavery, which you can hear more about above.

Jhené Aiko re-releasing Sailing Soul(s) onto streaming platforms Friday 03/16

Posted: 09 Mar 2021 01:22 PM PST

Didn't see anybody post this but she posted about it yesterday. A few extra bonus tracks added as well.

March 12, 2011 i met up with @j3collection in Long Beach as the sun was setting to shoot the cover for my mixtape "sailing soul(s)".

there had been a big tsunami in Japan the day before and @j3collection was like... "u sure u wanna do this?!"

i really wanted to get everything done in time to release it on my birthday (3/16) so i was like "YES!" lol

this mixtape was a pivotal moment for me. when i was 12 i was signed to a label, singing songs i had no real connection to. besides that, i had no real stories of my own to tell at 12 lol. then i took a break to focus on school. in my teens i was singing demo records and taking meetings.

i met with one record exec who told me i needed to do a better job at "selling" myself when i came into meetings. dressing like myself, singing like myself, talking like myself... wasn't enough. i thought, "why do i have to sell myself? why do i have to try to convince you of my worth? of who i am??? 🧐

from that point on i decided i would never try to "sell" myself. i would simply BE myself and whoever felt a connection would SEE ME and my worth.

i wanted the cover to express me breaking free from that narrative of having to "sell" myself. i wanted the broken chains to symbolize that freedom of feeling i anchored... free to be me, going with the flow... going with the wind like a sail boat... freeing my soul..."sailing" my soul instead of selling my soul 💙

FINALLY! for it's 10th year anniversary "sailing soul(s)" (plus a few throwback bonus tracks 👀) will be available on all streaming platforms!!

thank you #SoulMates for sailing with me for over 20 years ⛵️

i love u 💙
