[DISCUSSION] Royce Da 5'9" - The Allegory (One Year Later)

The Allegory is the eighth studio album by American rapper Royce da 5'9". It was released through eOne Music on February 21, 2020. It features guest appearances from Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine, KXNG Crooked, Cyhi the Prynce, DJ Premier, Eminem, Grafh, Sy Ari da Kid, T.I., Vince Staples, Westside Gunn, and Cedric the Entertainer among others.

Critical reception

The Allegory received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 79 based on seven reviews, which indicates "generally favorable reviews".

Kyle Mullin of Exclaim! praised the album saying, "That's right: sonically, thematically, lyrically — on every level, Royce gives The Allegory his all. And the result is the best LP yet in his 20-year-strong career". HipHopDX critic Kevin Cortez stated, "The Allegory plays out as Royce's most consolidated offering yet. A definite career high-point for a rapper whose résumé spans over 20 years". AllMusic's Neil Z. Young said, "Intense and thrilling, The Allegory is a powerful work with uncomfortably realistic and poignant snapshots of American life that linger long after the last song has finished". Will Lavin of NME said, "Royce's 2018 album Book of Ryan was always going to be a tough act to follow, but The Allegory stands up as an accomplished body of work, packed full of poetic intricacies and life lessons, soundtracked by the sound of Detroit; it will likely end up on the majority of 2020 end-of-year rap lists". George Garner of Q said, "At 22 tracks - including a spoken interlude by Eminem - there's a lot to digest here. But, crucially, a lot worth digesting". RapReviews.com writer Sy Shackleford said, "While handling all of the production himself is a valiant effort, it's evident that Royce had a wobbly experience with it in that it isn't fully consistent. Even so, The Allegory is another solid effort from the Detroit rhyme sayer".

In a mixed review, Jay Balfour of Pitchfork wrote: "His beats are generally chunky sample flips and simple loops, but he also has an ear for a good sound. But if you're listening to a Royce album it's because you want to hear the guy rap. To his credit, Royce has the rare effect of a rapper's extreme technical ability making him seem limber instead of rigid".

At the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, The Allegory received a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.

These are the words of a man who has been in the rap scene for a long time and seen a lot of shit, and there's definitely a lot to respect with that. I pulled up a few of the tracks on genius and there's so much history referenced here, I love that. There's some great takes on here and a lot to come away with.

Unfortunately this is a pretty old school album though in the way that there's a lot of casual misogyny sitting here and I feel like, in a setting like this where you're trying to speak truth and set forth new ideas, you'd also want to not perpetuate that way of thinking either. I had a similar problem with Eminem's last album although this one is definitely better overall. Ultimately I feel like the material here could have been trimmed and focused down into something stronger, but there's definitely good things going on.

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

If you were a HipHopHead in the mid-2000s -- you experienced an incredible time for Country Rap Tunes. Bangers were slow and syrupy out of Houston & fast and trappy out of Atlanta.

  • Kim Kardashian has filed to divorce Kanye West after 7 years of marriage, but our sources say it's as amicable as a divorce can be.

  • Kim is asking for joint legal and physical custody of the couple's 4 kids. Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ Kanye is fine with the joint custody arrangement, and we're told both Kim and Ye are committed to co-parenting together.

  • There's a prenup and we're told neither party is contesting it. In fact, our sources say they are already far along in reaching a property settlement agreement.

  • The docs, filed by disso queen Laura Wasser, don't list a date of separation ... it's listed as to be determined. The date is almost irrelevant, because their split has been so well-chronicled in the news and social media.

  • It was during the last half of 2020 when things got super rocky for Kimye ... West launched his Presidential campaign on July 4 and weeks later held a bizarre campaign event in South Carolina. At one point, a sobbing Kanye told a story of a discussion he had with Kim ... talking about abortion when she was pregnant with their first child.

  • It wasn't long after that when Kanye took a series of shots at the Kardashian/Jenner family on Twitter, at one point referring to matriarch, Kris Jenner, as "Kris Jong Un."

  • Multiple sources with direct knowledge told us Kim was ready to call it quits after Kanye's outbursts, if not for Kanye going through a serious bipolar episode. She had felt it would be cruel to end the marriage when he wasn't doing well.

  • Things got so rocky, the couple had been living separately for a few months. He was spending a lot of his time in Wyoming while she was in Calabasas with the kids. The issue? We were told it wasn't contentious or ugly ... but their differences in lifestyle and politics were chief, among others.

What are the differences between a so-called “industry plant” and a rapper who’s label is doing their job by properly pushing them?

The term "industry plant" is thrown around a lot on this sub & across the internet, usually to describe artists who have seemingly come out of nowhere & are now getting a big push by their label/the music industry. There are three definitions for "industry plant" on Urban Dictionary (not the best source, I realize):

  1. (the top definition): "An industry plant is an artist who has Major/Indie Label backing their movement but presents themselves as a "home grown start up" label to create a pseudo organic following. They act as if things are miraculously happening for them based on their talent (via blog coverage, media coverage, mtv playing their vids, etc.) The reality is a low risk/high reward situation for labels looking to build the next 'new star'"

  2. "A rapper or an aspiring rapper who's being influenced by a label or company to write and preform music in a trendy way in order to gain clout (popularity)"

  3. "successful new artist who got people mad because their label and management is doing a good job"

Now, if you go by the last definition, you could argue that the term means nothing & industry plants don't exist. I don't necessarily agree with that, which is why I'm posing the initial question. I'd also argue that the top definition, which says industry plants are artists who pretend to be homegrown but aren't, doesn't accurately describe a lot of the artists I personally see being accused of being plants, however creating an artificial come up story is definitely a thing that happens & that's something to consider.

One last thing: this post from Pigs & Planes posing the question "What is an industry plant?" has a very interesting quote from the Former CCO of Complex/EVP of Def Jam Recordings.

"Using examples like Nas and Big L, Callahan-Bever points out that in the past, fans rarely knew about an artist before they signed to a label. Getting covered in mainstream media would be their first exposure to the public, despite often putting in years of work behind the scenes. Back then, he says, there was more trust in industry gatekeepers, so few people viewed the sudden emergence of a previously unheralded act as something nefarious.

"Before you had the internet, it almost always felt like artists 'came out of nowhere' and then were down with this person or that person and had big connections," he says. "All of a sudden they're in The Source every month for three months in a row. But unless you were super plugged into the industry, it was always like, 'Who is this new person? The Source is telling me that this is the new most important MC from Harlem.'"
