How Mac Millers discography represents a person's life span, from childhood till death.

Posted: 17 Jan 2021 06:42 PM PST

Macs whole discography is like a full lifetime experience, from childhood to death (hear me out).

Starts of with KIDS (self explanatory) and it captures the youthful freedom of adolescence, its not perfect and there's definitely room to grow but that's sorta what I love about it. He really was just a kid back then and this tape captures that perfectly.

"I guess I'm doin' well Smokin' all the weed that I used to sell But once my album goes in the shelves It's going Nextel how it's finna sell"

Macadellic is where he's introduced to fame and drugs. Two very dangerous things. This tape represents how fun and exciting this part of his life were. Being rich young and famous and living that party life. Mac was like 19/20 touring Europe with Lil Wayne and Macadellic shows how much fun he was having. More importantly though this tape definitely shows a huge maturity from KIDS, both musically and lyrically. There is some serious introspection on this mixtape which foreshadows his future work.

"They just dreams, turn 'em to reality Double-cup of lean, standin' on my balcony Lookin' at the sky, thinkin' it could all be mine All we got is memories, so what the fuck is time?"

WMWTSS is like Macadellic but with the polish of a studio album. If Macadellic was the party life, this album is the morning after. Much more introspection, Mac is in his early 20s, living in LA. He is still very much living the high life. Parties, drugs, girls.. young rap star shit. But on this record he sees it for what it is and shows a real understanding of the dangers associated with that lifestyle. A lot of tragic foreshadowing too which becomes a reoccurring motif in his music.

"Love me, love me, that fentanyl, it numb me (Numb)"

Faces is Macs best work imo. Take all of the trippiest aspects of all his previous projects, all the introspection, all the drugged out psychedelic shit. I don't know what I like more about this tape, the lyricism or the production (most of which is by the man himself). He said it himself. He was not on planet earth when he made this album. Tracks like Angel Dust, New Faces V2, Rain, Funeral and Grand Finale are career highlights. All of which include heaps of drug references. This album sounds like when the drugs change from being fun to being torture. Don't get me wrong, it's still a 'fun' album to listen to, full of Macs signature sense of humour (just listen to Friends with a funny ass Schoolboy Q feature). But in the context of his death, it really is a beautiful tragedy. He says it himself on this tape - "A shame that my tragedy my masterpiece". Faces has by far the most references to death by overdose. Some really haunting foreshadowing throughout. I'm bias because Mac is my favourite rapper, but in my opinion this is the best mixtape of all time and its not even close. Honestly its probably my favourite rap project of any kind. 10/10

"Doin' drugs is just a war with boredom but they sure to get me"

After leaving planet earth on Faces, as Mac put it, he went to live with legendary Rick Rubin for a few months to get sober. I mean whos to say how long this sobriety lasted or even to what extent he was sober. But that is honestly none of our business. But if Good A:M is any sort of indicator, Mac seemed to be in a much better place. The title is very fitting because Mac seems to be awake. If WMWTSO is the morning after a party, then Good A:M is the morning after that day of being hungover. On this album, Mac very directly addresses his issues but assures his fans that he's on top of it. Musically, this is probably his most 'rap' based project. The beats knock and there's some real bangers on it (when in rome, cut the check, 100 grandkids, club house) but there's still some deep shit on here (God Speed is one of his best tracks, with many heartbreaking moments of foreshadowing)

"I ain't saying that I'm sober I'm just in a better place"

The Divine Femine is a fully fleshed out album of elements he only had just teased in previous projects. 10 songs all about different aspects of love. Mac is dating Arianna Grande at the time (though he says most of the album had been written before they were together, a common misconception is that this album is all about her) it seems as though through love, Mac is able to get out of the cycle of addiction that he was in over the years previous. I don't even want to bring up anything drug related in the context if this album because this album really is not about that. Dang is also a fucking banger.

"You in my dreams, that's why I sleep all the time Just to hear you say I love you, just to touch you, just to leave you behind"

After TDF Mac goes the longest amount of time without releasing music. Queue a breakup with Arianna, a DUI, and some tweets from Grande alluding to Mac being back on drugs, fans are sort of worried. Then, Swimming drops. This album is a beautiful blend of every other album, but its also very much its own thing. If fans are worried, this album seemed like a reassurance, but also an acknowledgement that the worries people had weren't entirely unfounded. Swimming was an acknowledgement that he's not okay, but that he is persevering. Some really beautiful somber moments on this record but also some of his most upbeat funky cuts like Whats The Use and Ladders. Such a tragic album in the context of his death because you could tell he was trying to get through the darkness. I really think he was in a good place, and his death was a tragic mistake which can truly happen to anyone who dabbles in drugs.

"I got all the time in the world, so for now I'm just chillin' Plus I know it's a, it's a beautiful feelin' In oblivion, yeah, yeah, oblivion, yeah"

Circles is a direct extension of Swimming. To me, if Swimming is about the importance of perseverance, then Circles is about the acknowledgement that its okay to experience setbacks in your pursuit of being better. Of course, this album came out after he was dead so there's no other context to hear the album. Really stunning album musically. If there was one song I would choose to sum up the career of this man (not that this is possible given the absolute diversity of his discography) I would have to choose Good News. This is one of his best songs. It captures how sometimes things seem hopeless, but also a sort of strange optimism that things will get better, and an awareness that the struggles you experience will serve to build character. Circles as a whole is sort of filled with this tragic optimism. His death really solidifies the tragic nature of the project.

"And I don't have a name, I don't have a name, no Who am I to blame? Who am I to blame though? And I cannot be changed, I cannot be changed, no Trust me, I've tried I just end up right at the start of the line Drawin' circles"

So when I said that his discography sort of represents a lifespan, I mean that in this sense

  • KIDS is the beginning, almost childlike in its innocence. Circles is the end, a morbid and tragic acceptance of one's mortality. Everything in-between has been growth and maturity. The fact that there's only 7/8 years between KIDS and Circles is insane and truly is a credit to Mac and it highlights my favourite aspect to him as an artist - constant evolution.

RIP Mac forever.

92 - ∞

With a career as rich as Macs, there was obviously some projects I couldn't include. Blue Side Park carries over similar themes to KIDS and it marks the beginning of Macs immense commercial success (number 1 independent album?!) Delusional Thomas shows just how weird and tripped out and off the wall he could get, this tape couldn't be further removed from KIDS era Mac. His pitched up alter ego talking about murder and drugs. Sick project with some killer production from Larry Fisherman himself. Speaking of production, even if he wasn't a rapper, his production talents probably would have been enough to secure him a spot in the big leagues. Miller produced Vince Staples first big tape (Stolen Youth) and Vince credits Mac for helpiny to jump starting his career. Vince isn't the only one to thank Mac for helping out in that regard.

See Mac was one of the first to capitalise on Internet/YouTube era and he was a streaming juggernaut in the early 2010s in terms of YouTube views. With that success, he moved to LA. Now this is around the time that all sorts of new rappers were coming up through the industry. Odd Future is starting their rise, TDE is in its early days. Kendrick Lamar supported Mac Miller on tour in 2012. Yes, that Kendrick Lamar... Ab Soul has some cuts produced by Larry Fisherman and a couple of guest verses. Everyone knows how close Schoolboy Q and Mac were. I seen Mac live when I was 16, it was the Space Migration tour for WMWTSO. Chance The Rapper and Action Bronson were the supporting acts and The Internet also had a set beforehand as well as being his live band. My point is, Macs footprint is all over the new wave of rappers who emerged throughout the early 2010s. His legendary studio 'The Red Room' is probably the studio which birthed some of your favourite tracks of that era and chances are you wouldn't have known that. Mac didn't boast or brag but he was SUCH a major player and the rise of so many great artists.

The point of this post was initially to point out how Macs career sort of reflected the span of someone's life from childhood to death. I know it sort of digressed into a Mac Miller appreciation post, but I hope I got my main point across because for me, viewing his discography in that regard has added a lot to how I listen to his music.

DOOM/Adult Swim backstory

Posted: 17 Jan 2021 06:52 AM PST

DOOM was supposed to put out an Adult Swim collab album around 4 years ago. Tracks were released weekly until the project abruptly ended. This story is crazy if true

Jason Demarco of Adult Swim tweeted this info to fans asking about what happened (Link at bottom). This is all information taken from his Twitter thread which is a very heartfelt read imo. And it goes without saying but this is one person's account although he claims to have been the Adult Swim employee who dealt with him.

Summary of his statement

DOOM links up with Adult Swim for Mouse and The Mask (early 2000's). DOOM gets Demarco to agree to a 45k advance for a 2nd record that DOOM never gave and ducks Demarco's calls. Demarco chooses not to recoup it.

Demarco gets in trouble at work and his reputation takes a hit for allowing this and never reclaiming the money.

DOOM sends Demarco two paintings years later as an "apology". Demarco learns DOOM had a child battling illness in the hospital around the time he gave the advance.

DOOM comes back 4 years ago and obviously Demarco is reluctant after what happened last time. But it's DOOM so he does it. Basically reluctant but with respect for DOOM and the expectation that DOOM could hold up his end of responsibilities.

Project (The Missing Notebook Rhymes) begins when AS finds out that DOOM did not clear any of the samples as he claimed to have done, and did not pay the producers in full.

Demarco also finds out that DOOM was in debt to a record label and the profits would be owed to that label.

Edit: not sure why DOOM was supposed to have cleared the samples.

The project is discontinued and Demarco is left to explain all this to his higher ups, again.

Demarco finishes by saying DOOM was one of the greats and in spite of him screwing him over he didnt regret his choices.

I hate the meme comment "hits different now" but this story really does. And how he was respected by someone like Demarco and a friend even though he was either broke/ a jerk when it comes to working professionally.

[DISCUSSION] Eminem- Music To Be Murdered By (1 Year Later)

Posted: 17 Jan 2021 04:00 AM PST

So a year passed since Eminem surprise dropped another project, which honestly judging by it's cover art and the track list felt more like a fan made mock up, than a legitimate album.

This album was a debut in terms of Em featuring new school trap artists such as Juice Wrld and Don Toliver.

The way Eminem appeared on this album felt more relaxed compared to Kamikaze but also more focused on creating a pure rap record compared to Revival, which personally created an overall more enjoyable experience compared to both previous records for me.

It had two singles, each going for a completely different vibe and both achieving success in their own way.

Most songs on the album were good with a few being meh (I didn't skip any of the tracks tho).

My personal standouts would be :

Darkness, marsh, premonition, I will, lock it up

History And Mystery Of Mama's Boyfriend

Posted: 17 Jan 2021 09:22 PM PST

July 27th, 2010. Kanye West. Facebook Headquarters in Palo Alto, California. A folding table. Performing a spoken word verse from a song called Mama's Boyfriend. This was before My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was the name of his fifth album, then it was rumored to be titled good ass job which is now instead of the rumored title of the Kanye X Chance collab album that will never come out. Sadly, the same can be said for the song Mama's Boyfriend that was performed at the Facebook headquarters on that summer in 2010. But luckily, it leaked. Kind of.

For those of you new to the song, there are several versions out there. The first-ever version known to exist is the Facebook folding table acapella. The second version is a leak that came on June 13th, 2011. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4S_v20GcjiZekl2TDl5aUZONVU/view?usp=sharing Click this link to hear it. This version of the track opens with a sample of the song "The velvet swing" by Acoustic Alchemy (https://youtu.be/VgPhUw3Nx_Q, you can hear the sample at 4:44.) The second sample "Alright you niggas" is currently a mystery, some people on KTT think it's from the movie Dolemite but some others think it's from a Curtis Mayfield sample. Please for the love of god let me know what the sample is, I have been looking for it for three hours now to no avail. This version is actually fan-made. According to the statement released by Kanye's representative on June 16th, 2011, the beat was not real it was fan-made.

The second version of the song that most people have heard is the one with the Billy Joel sample. This version was first premiered by Q-Tip (of a tribe called quest fame) during the red bull academy lecture he gave in April of 2013. This version of the song heavily interpolates the Billy Joel song "Moving Up (Anthony's Song)" off his album "The stranger." https://youtu.be/8RWctL6Pk6A, the song starts at the timestamp 1:38:25. As Q-Tip presses play the song abruptly starts with the breakdown of "Moving Up", specifically the part where Billy Joel sings on the chorus "Seems such a waste of time, if that's what it's all about, Mama if that's moving up then I'm moving out." I am pretty sure that "a-la" sound you hear on Kanye's track is Billy Joel singing "Cadillac" about 1:27 into the song "Movin' out' but sped up. Q-Tip did a good job chopping up the song, I really like how he took the horns section from after the first chorus of "Movin' Out" and centered the entire rhythm section of Mama's boyfriend around this sample.

This sample was supposed to signify that Kanye wanted his Mama's boyfriend to move out according to Q-Tip. He also said that Soulja Boy was supposed to be on the track. Can you believe that Soulja Boy only just turned 30? He was 17 when he released "Crank That", god damn.

There have been several fan recreations of the Billy Joel version of the song, most uncreatively just adding the whole Billy Joel song onto the original Kanye vocals and calling it the "extended" version of the track. But there is a good one, this version is still up on YouTube and I hope that if Mama's boyfriend does get released someday it sounds like this song right here: https://youtu.be/iL2Mq11RFqE. This version doesn't have Kanye's second verse, but I still like it because it adds a lot more bounce to the Billy Joel sample.

That's mostly it for the history of Mama's Boyfriend, there haven't been many updates on if the song will come out or not. Since this is just an unreleased track, we'll probably hear it either when Kanye's laptop gets stolen by some distant cousin again or when he dies and his entire vault of music gets released (hopefully). If you have any more information, please let me know. This post was made to spread more knowledge about the unreleased song so if I am wrong on anything, please let me know. I really hope this gets more people to listen to one of my favorite unreleased Kanye tracks, another good one is Southside Serenade but that's for another time.

P.S. There is a fourth version of the song supposedly that was recorded live with John Legend doing some backup vocals, PLEASE SOMEBODY FIND THAT VIDEO.

[DISCUSSION] Anderson .Paak - Malibu (5 Years Later)

Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:30 AM PST

Malibu is the second studio album by American singer Anderson Paak. It was released on January 15, 2016, by ArtClub International, Empire Distribution, OBE and Steel Wool Records following the release of his EP, Link Up & Suede, with Knxwledge (credited as the duo, NxWorries).

Malibu was supported by four singles: "The Season / Carry Me", "Am I Wrong", "Room in Here" and "Come Down". The album received widespread critical acclaim, placing highly on several music critics' end-of-year lists. It received a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Background

The album is described as the beginning of his potential commercial breakthrough, following his prominent role on Dr. Dre's album Compton (2015). Paak is featured on six songs on Compton, including "Animals". The track was produced by DJ Premier. Although, the track was initially slated for his 2016 album, Malibu. Dr. Dre later approved to have the track featured on his album Compton.[1]

[DISCUSSION] Mac Miller - Circles (1 year later)

Today marks the 1 year release date of Mac Miller's posthumous album, Circles. Circles was originally planned to be released after Circles, but Mac sadly passed a month after the release of Swimming. On the 8th of January Mac's parents posted to Instagram an announcement saying that they had sat down with Jon Brion to finish an album he had been working on. Jon Brion had previously worked with Mac on Swimming, so fans were familiar with him and he was familiar with Mac's work. Jon Brion said in his interview with Zane Lowe from Beats 1, quote: I found a few songs he had never gotten around to play me, they were song based. 5. I Can See…. I loved the track, but then I would turn back to a torture, like omg and you were capable of that?. I personally think there are no Mac fans, who doesn't see this as the perfect way to potentially close off his discography. Both his family and Jon being involved in releasing it in a way to close his legacy off. It's beautiful. Compared to how other artists who've passed away in recent years (rip), have had their post-death legacy handled, it's refreshing to see his family did it.

My personal experience with this album was emotionally tough. That's to say the least. It released overnight and I heard it on my way to work. 4. Good News had already leaked previously, but yet still, once I made it to the fourth track, my heart sunk. I had to stop the car multiple times during the album release to shed some tears. It was early in the morning and the sky was golden with a mix of purple. A perfect reflection on how I felt. Happy, but sad at the same time. It's so painfully beautiful. With so much happening during 2020, I often found myself coming back to this gorgeous album. It's so smooth and laid back. Whenever I feel down 4. Good News will often be put on. The transition from 12. Once a Day to 1. Circles is so pretty and comes off smooth, perfectly described by Dissect, quote; "The album ends on an unstable chord and starts on a stable chord…. In music, this is a proper resolution, the final unresolved chord of Circles is resolved by the opening chord that begins the album. It closes the loop, the album Circles is a circle.". This partakes in the reason to why I can listen to the album back to back smoothly. Whether it's due to my mood leaning towards the colorful 3. Blue World produced by Guy Lawrence, half of EDM group Disclosure. 8. Hand Me Downs if I want to bless my ears with some gorgeous singing and a beautiful instrumental. This song is also the only one to feature a feature. 11. Surf is arguably my favorite track off of the record. I think all in all this is one of Mac's better projects. Despite him not being too involved with it, you could clearly see where in life he was. It felt as if he was doing better, which makes this album even harder to process. It's beautiful, but painful at the same time. I'm glad that we got to experience this.

How do you see this project in line with the rest of his discography?

What are your experience's with this project?

What impact did it leave 1 year later?

Ay yo my girl left me and the only thing keeping me going is digging into deeper, lesser known hip-hop, any recs?

This might just get auto-mod'd, idk, but I'm pretty fucked up and the only thing I'm really getting enjoyment out of anymore is finding new favorite songs, artists and albums. There is almost nothing as special as finding THAT artist, and examples of these for me in the last couple years have been (yeah im late to the party on many of these guys):

MF DOOM, (RIP) on Christmas night 2018, where I heard Madvillainy for the first time and listened to it three times in a row with a massive fucking smile on my face.

JPEGMAFIA, who then soon after released All My Heroes, one of my favorite albums since then.

MAVI, with Eye/I and I/Nation being one of my favorite songs of all time.

Recently, I heard Clipping. for the first time and had my mind melted, loving Enlacing and Check The Lock.

Quelle Chris, Westside Boogie, MIKE, Flatbush Zombies, and more are all artists I never would have heard without digging, and though some of the above are becoming more and more mainstream, they're all mostly artists I cant make much conversation about with friends. This is all without mentioning how I've begun to dig into older rap, artists like Rakim, Inspectah Deck, Talib Kweli, and more, or how I probably only found Freddie Gibbs, JID, and Denzel because of this subreddit.

Any of you guys have any deep recs, similar to artists I listed, or unrelated? Or any stories of the first time you had your mind blown by an artist who immediately made your top five? Im still fucked up over DOOM, especially in hand with my ex leaving me. Life sucks but hip-hop is rad. Just bored and cant sleep and need new music. Sorry if this shit is rambly. Take it easy homies.
