Recommended If You Like Thread - November 16, 2019

Posted: 16 Nov 2019 10:04 AM PST

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

[DISCUSSION] Dr. Dre - 2001 (20 Years Later)

Posted: 15 Nov 2019 08:57 PM PST

On November 16th, 1999 Dr. Dre released his second album, 2001.

After Dr. Dre escaped the sinking ship that was better known as Death Row Records, he ended up on dry land at Interscope Records, where label head Jimmy Iovine rewarded Andre Young for his talent and hard work with a vanity label of his own, which he called Aftermath Records. Once this news hit the hip hop media, it was wholly expected that Dre's first release was going to blow our collective minds, due to its inherent awesomeness and the fact that Death Row's output had declined in quality almost immediately following Dre's departure.

However, what we ended up with is a crappy compilation album entitled Dr. Dre Presents The Aftermath. marketed as a sampler of all of the artists Dre had signed after decorating the new offices. (None of whom would ever release their own album.) Only one track was credited to Dr. Dre the rapper: that was the mild MTV hit "Been There, Done That", in which the man who popularized G-Funk gangsta rap denounced his former sub-genre, choosing instead to focus on positive messages, living life to the fullest, and, oddly, ballroom dancing. Fans were satisfied by the track itself, but the compilation tanked, since the rest of it pretty much lackluster (save for one other song, Group Therapy's "East Coast West Coast Killas", which featured Dre on the hook surrounded by KRS-One, B-Real, Nas, and RBX, who was the odd man out in this cry for hip hop solidarity), and Aftermath Records was near written off as yet another failed investment for Interscope.

Then, two seemingly unrelated events occurred. First, Dr. Dre was flipping through some demo tapes and independently-released albums that somehow found their way into his collection, and came across an EP by an unknown artist named Marshall Mathers, better known as Eminem. Impressed with the craziness he heard (Dre was listening to The Slim Shady EP, after all), he quickly signed the guy from Detroit and helped him take over MTV. (the urban legend)

The other event that happened was more of an attitude shift for the unlicensed Doctor. After leaving Death Row Records, a label which owed its very existence to violent and sexist rap music, he vowed to leave it all behind him and move on to other topics. Dr. Dre claims that, late one night, his wife found him in a slightly depressed funk, wondering where his musical career was going to take him, and gave him the green light to start talking about murder, bitches, hos, and murdering bitches and hos again, all for the sake of entertainment. Andre quickly pulled his white lab coat and stethoscope out of his storage unit in Compton, and began recording what was tentatively called Chronic 2000, ostensibly a sequel to his breakthrough "solo" album The Chronic, with the help and encouragement of his two most successful apprentices, Snoop Dogg (who escaped from Death Row Records himself shortly after the Dre debacle) and Eminem.

Suge Knight, who was clearly not bitter about losing his cash cows to rival labels, took out his anger on Dre and Snoop every chance he got. He threatened both men with physical violence and lawsuits, often at the same time. He released a DVD, Death Row Uncut, which included, alongside uncensored (read: chock-full of female nudity) music videos from Death Row's vault, very specific directions as to how to find both Dre and Snoop's respective houses. He signed rappers to the label, talent be damned, specifically to trash talk these two men, whom, for the most part, they never actually had the pleasure of meeting. (Crooked I, of Slaughterhouse, was one of these signings, although he actually wielded some skill behind the mic, unlike the Snoop Dogg soundalike Top Dogg, whose career went nowhere) Finally, in one of the most unsurprising moves in the history of hip hop, Suge Knight released his own album entitled Suge Knight Represents: Chronic 2000: Still Smokin', a double-disc label compilation fully intended to strip sales away from Dre's own comeback project. Suge's album featured numerous potshots at both Dre and Snoop by many interesting names, including Soopafly, Daz Dillinger, Kurupt Tha Realest (a 2Pac soundalike), 2Pac (older recordings), Dre's baby mama Michel'le, Treach from Naughty By Nature, and E-40.

Even though Dre's original title for his project had been stolen by his former business partner, he proceeded undeterred, releasing his first album in seven years, now simply titled 2001, in 1999. It was easily the most anticipated hip hop release of that year. Building upon the same recipe from The Chronic, Dr. Dre used 2001 as a way to introduce lesser-known artists such as Hittman and Six-Two to the mainstream (much like he did with Snoop, Tha Dogg Pound, Warren G., Nate Dogg, and The Lady of Rage on The Chronic), except this time around he also featured many of the rappers whose careers he helped build (such as Snoop, Kurupt (strange in that he also appeared on Suge Knight's album), Nate Dogg, and Eminem) and others who he just admired (such as Devin The Dude, King Tee, and Xzibit). (2001 also originally boasted guest appearances from Redman and Sticky Fingaz (of Onyx) in its print ads: the Sticky Fingaz track would end up on Eminem's second Aftermath album The Marshall Mathers LP, but any Redman Dr. Dre-produced song has been securely locked in a vault, as it has never leaked.) Dre, never really one to write his own lyrics, looked to the likes of Eminem, Snoop, Jay-Z, and Royce da 5'9" and took his time creating every single beat on 2001, save for the final one, which he purchased from Lord Finesse.

2001 has since sold more than seven million copies, earning a ton of critical and commercial praise, and is generally considered as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. Dr. Dre would also go on to win a Grammy for Producer Of The Year.

What are your thoughts on this album?

How does it hold up 20 years later?

How does it compare to his other albums?

[DISCUSSION] Can we have a real conversation about industry plants?

Posted: 14 Nov 2019 03:58 PM PST

TLDR; the title of this post

The reason I'm writing this post is because I see the term "industry plant" being thrown around a lot, but there's no real consensus on what the term actually means. It's been talked about quite a bit on this subreddit, but I struggle to find any large discussion threads which really dive deep into the term. I don't expect any consensus to be reached, but I'm quite interested to hear the different opinions on the matter, and explore the idea in a bit more depth. I'll first lay out some of the common points people make when discussing the matter, and then give my two cents about what the term means to me.

Resources – This is a common thread in nearly all arguments made about industry plants. A small unknown artist gets a ton of money and resources thrown their way (mainly from large record companies) to help make them blow up fast. This comes in the form of marketing, radio promotion, tour promotion, high budget music videos, collabs, music production/mastering, writing, etc. A grey area resource that might also fit is one's connections to certain artists/producers which might help you land a big it.

Rise of popularity – Another common feature of an industry plant describes their rise to popularity. Artists who have shown to grow a fanbase independently and organically are excluded from the industry plant discussion. They can sign a deal with a major record label and be thrown a ton of resources to help them grow/sustain their growth, however you can't call them an industry plant because they have already shown to build a fanbase independently from major help. If however an artist's growth is not organic, and was only possible after a ton of resources were thrown their way, than they would be a prime candidate for an industry plant. It should also be said another element people cite is the speed at which they blew up. People are usually more apt to call somebody a plant if they had only heard about them a week ago, however now that artist is everywhere they look.

Deception – A big factor to many is also deceiving the public that you are independent, when in reality you are being backed by a major record label. They might release your music under a blank/misleading/obscured copyright, and the narrative crafted around the artist might also suggest (or explicitly state) that they came up on their own without the help of any major label. I have also heard of labels who hire professional meme makers to create and spread memes on social media to act like the buzz around a certain artist is larger than it actually is, this would be another form of deception in my mind.

Guidance/Control – I include this point because it is a large component for me (but not for everyone). This describes a label having a certain amount of control over an artist in what type of music they make or how they are branded. This could also be a subset of resources because it is tied to marketing, music production/mastering, music videos etc. This is especially prevalent in copycat artists, and label's trying to cash in on a trend. (looking at you lil pump lookalikes) It might also be a label handcrafting the writing, production, collabs, and giving a near finished track to an artist whose only job would be to sing over it. (happens quite frequently I might add especially for bigger artists) To some it might also include very young unknown artists who show some talent, but are "groomed" by the label to perfect their craft. (this one because a bit of a slippery slope but it is worth mentioning, and it includes artists like justin beiber)

Not to keep adding to this wall of text, but I would like to throw some hypotheticals out there to help guide discussion. Is control over an artist's music/image a necessary component? AKA if an artist writes/produces their music all by themselves, however did not previously have a platform to build a fan base before the label markets them, are they still a plant? Also if an artist is groomed by a label at a very young age, even though they might have shown a lot of talent to begin with, does that make them a plant? Does the speed of their growth affect anything? Do the resources need to be provided by a major label, or could hypothetically your rich uncle be supplying your hobby? If you had connections to a major artist (maybe through family) and that lands you big name features, does that make you a plant?

In my own view, I think there is a certain level of disrespect that comes with calling someone an industry plant, and for that reason I am fairly restrictive with my definition. To me, anybody who makes their own music without the help of a label must be excluded from the conversation no matter how much marketing and promotion they give them (with maybe the exception being if there is an egregious amount of deception to the public about whether the artist is signed) I think the most obvious industry plants are one's which copy current trends and that labels are trying to make a quick buck off of, and artists that are handed finished songs with their only job being to sing over it. Also artists whose public image is entirely crafted by the label seems a bit sketchy to me too. A common belief around here I see is that whenever a label funds an album and music videos for relatively unknown artists, people think this automatically makes them a plant. However with this broad definition, you would have to label the vast majority of artists as plants. Even in today's social media age where blowing up organically is a lot easier than it was 20 years ago, the truth is it is still pretty darn rare to make it in the industry without any help.

I think this conversation is most discussed in the realm of hip hop due to the history of the genre. Hip hop was built on stories of the struggle and long path of success. It has also had a long history of dismissing rappers with ghost writers as not true emcees. (although this sentiment has sure changed a lot over time) It is for these reasons I think that us hip hop heads feel slighted when artists blow up with an easy path and a lot of help. If you made it this far thank you a lot because this took a lot of time to write up. I'd love to know your guy's opinions and any misconceptions I might have!

In this episode we talk to Noname about Noname's Bookclub, and the inspiration behind it and her aspirations for it, including her plot to take down Amazon. We get into conversations about capitalism, socialism, Paulo Friere's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Noname's critique of American Exceptionalism in Song 32, and broader discussions about representation and the state of hip hop music today as a cultural vehicle for progressive change.
