[Spoilers] Pt. 2 of the Rhythm and Flow review

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 10:53 AM PDT

I have just finished the finale of Rhythm and Flow's first season, and I have to say it was pretty good. The samples were so-so, but the features showcased a level of across the board tension that hadn't been seen yet, and the show hopefully tries to recreate in the future. The finale was very, very, very entertaining and topped the features, which really surprised me. If this show can figure out what it wants to be and flesh out some of the details, Netflix will have successfully infiltrated yet another market.

Judges:

  • Chance the Rapper: Netflix honestly fucked by including him with the judges. Unlike Cardi, who I found more palatable and almost genuinely funny in the last three episodes, Chance did not improve in the slightest. His weird vendetta against Caleb Colossus needed to be addressed off-camera and put to bed. He really had nothing intuitive to contribute that Cardi or TI couldn't have said themselves. For example, he said at one point a sampled song should be so good that you can forget the other artists who've used it and even the original song, then proceeds to criticize Flawless for transforming his sample into a nearly unrecognizable banger. Also, The fact that he had the balls to call CALEB preachy was so cringeworthy I had to turn away from the tv for a few seconds. He also looked stupid when T.I. said in the finale that there is a lot of opportunity for the winner of the competition, and Chance said "uh, yeah, and money and shit" (2/10)

  • Cardi B: I had to say I was pleasantly surprised with her in the last three episodes, where she changed somehow. Her dialogue was a little more coherent and she kind of just hit her stride, if that makes sense. She stuck almost entirely to off-beat commentary/comic declined, presenting a female perspective, and expressing the importance of how a song can be played on the radio or top the charts. The banter between TI and Cardi was also really funny at times and gave me hope for her inevitable future in the show. (7/10)

  • T.I.: He remained the best judge and I have nothing to complain about. I was dumbfounded when Tip made a joke about being one of the forefathers of trap music and it just hit me that TI damn near invented an entire genre of music. I already knew it, but it's just crazy to think about. (9/10)

Contestants:

  • Caleb Colossus: Next to Beanz and Old Man Saxon, Caleb is in the running for the most undeserving exit. His sample was great and he performed it well, despite being far outside of his comfort zone. He mastered autotune and made a record that Cardi said had great radio playability, which is a MASSIVE compliment. His feature was very good and probably his second best performance, after his music video. In such a close contest, when talking about the features, Caleb wasn't necessarily the best but Londynn needed to be sent home instead of him because of her badly remedied mistake. I hypothesize that because the judges sent Sam home, they needed a diversity element so Londynn had to stay on to the finale. (8/10)

  • Sam Be Yourself: I'm not a huge fan of his, and I believe that he is going to have difficulty finding mainstream success as long as guys like NF are still killing it for their demographic. His lyrics aren't compelling, but it's not really worth discussing since his totally justified elimination. (6/10)

  • Londynn B: As much as I like her, she really struggled in both the sample and the feature to the point that her elimination in both of those rounds should have been HEAVILY considered. However, she was saved herself BIG TIME in the finale with an absolute undeniable banger. It was a pretty standard, for how she rapped earlier in the show, but I think it was great that she solidified her style and energy, as well as her potential to create a guaranteed mainstream hit. I think she will probably have one, sooner rather than later, if she works with London on da Track. Cardi gives a great point when she says that Londynn isn't just a rapper for women, but for everyone who listens to her.(7-8/10)

  • Troyman: He hopes his game even higher in the last few episodes, staying somewhat in the middle of the pack but still bringing the heat and dropping some seriously awesome lyrics. His finale performance was incredible, and I'm looking forward to him working with Tay Keith. TI and Cardi's high praise speaks volumes to his skill level and its only a matter of time before Troyman is a chart topper. (9/10)

  • Flawless Real Talk: Still as talented as ever, and performing very well in all three episodes, but I can't help but feel almost unimpressed by his finale. It wasn't really anything different than anything he had done earlier in the competition. He also started to dive a little into Sam Be Yourself's platform, which I'm not a fan of, but it's whatever. He already proved he was passionate and smooth, but I wish he would just kind of go off his beaten path sometimes. (9/10)

  • D Smoke: To the surprise of no one, D Smoke killed each challenge put before him. I feel bad that he was given Sounwave as his producer, because compared to the likes of Tay Keith, London on da Track, and Hit Boy, he is almost being set up for failure. I personally love him because I'm a big TDE fan,(Schoolboy Q is probably my favorite modern rapper) and I get that it's a good fit, but I wish there was someone else they could have given him that could have helped create a potential traditional radio hit. The production of his song in the finale was pretty underwhelming (but D Smoke apparently had a lot of interaction with making it, so it was most likely intentional), but HOT DAMN he definitely saved his best writing for last. I have a feeling that this show was just an audition for TDE, and that the 250k is just his signing bonus. My only complaint with Mr. Smoke is that he has a weak social media and streaming presence, for such a talented artist. He needs to hire someone, or multiple someone's, to take care of that for him and ensure his talents aren't squandered because of a lack of exposure. His win was obvious from the second round forward, and he's going to have a big 'ol future.(10/10)

Wrap-Up: I feel like all four of the finalists were destined to go to the finals, and it could very well have been somewhat staged to ensure that all four made it, based on the differences the judges addressed and a loose formula I noticed that presented three of them with a defining strength and weakness:

  • Troyman's pro is that while both southern and street, he has the potential for mainstream appeal. His con is he unfortunately sounds similar to many other already established rappers.

  • Flawless's pro is his tightly wound versatility, passion and and work ethic, while his con is his borderline arrogance that has the possibility of being taken the wrong way and also being too intense for some people.

  • Londynn's pro is her marketability, while her con is being so close to Cardi B in so many ways. The judges presented this as a pro, but I believe that unless she can stand out amongst fellow female rappers she will never reach her full potential.

  • D Smoke's pro is his genuine, authentic personality that comes through in his music, but he really didn't seem to have any cons other than a few mistakes throughout the competition. He was always essentially in first place and never faced the threat of elimination. His ability to create a somewhat shallow chart topper that appeals to kids is lower than the other three, but that has never been what he's been about. Regardless, that, and his woeful social media/streaming presence, is probably his defining weakness.

The show needed these four distinct talents to go all the way so there was a contrast without sacrificing any talent between them. If it was staged or not, I don't mind. I just wish it would be slightly less obvious if they did, ie perpetually shitting on Caleb Colossus despite his strong performances.

Outside of the actual competition aspect, this show needs to cut down on the extraneous interviews and biopics and streamline it more. It needs rigid, infallible structure that is clearly defined. The eliminations need to all be extensively explained for the audience before they leave. There should be prizes on each level, and I honestly think the end prize should be upped to a million dollars or something higher than 250k to just show how serious the stakes really are. If the show needs more elimination rounds before the finale to justify this, so be it.

My final rating of the show is a (7/10). It has potential, but leaves a lot to be desired. I hope Netflix renews it for more seasons, as long as it improves. The artists' genuine love for each other at the end is better than any tv drama, and if it's fake, call me a sucker,

Edit: As much as I like TI, I think maybe he should be replaced by someone like Juicy J, who has been in the game and STILL going strong currently, with no visible end in sight.

[Spoilers] Just finished Rhythm and Flow on Netflix and despite not being overly impressed, I don’t want it to stop yet.

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 06:03 PM PDT

Rhythm and Flow, Netflix's new original singing competition for rappers, was pretty interesting and simultaneously eye roll worthy. If I wrote out a full synopsis with my color commentary, it would be WAY too long, so I'll just list the points I noticed.

The Hosts (T.I., Chance the Rapper, and Cardi B)

  • T.I. was a perfect pick for the show and did a very good job. Instead of focusing purely on how well an artist could make "bangers" and present themselves (it's important, but not wholly important) he also delved into the actual art of rap and many other aspects of the genre and performing in general. He has a solid, dry sense of humor and was mostly impartial from what I could tell.

  • Chance the Rapper rubbed me the wrong way for most of the show. I also blame Netflix for seemingly casting an intentional sense of "sell out" when Chance spoke or presented. He would frequently address subject matter on how well it could be sold instead of looking at a rapper's style. When he returned to Chicago, it seemed like he was uncomfortable being in his hometown, despite the praise he received. I personally believe he should be replaced with someone who doesn't align so closely with Cardi B in opinions.

  • Cardi B should have been partially edited out and given to the audience in smaller doses. Outside of her fan base, I'm not sure who she was really appealing to. She is GROSSLY corporate and everything she said made little to no sense. I won't riff on her too hard, but she's just not for me. I DID appreciate her defying my preconceived notions that she would be overly biased towards women. Though she said she felt badly for them when she cut them, she showed that her judgement was mostly impartial, and she truly wanted the best of the best, and not just token women.

Guest Judges (In Order of Appearance: Snoop Dogg, Fat Joe and Jadakiss (HEHAAAAA), Quavo and Big Boi, Twista and Royce tha 5'9", and Smack*) (Also, guest stars in each city, like Killer Mike and Lupe Fiasco)

  • Scoping out the local talent was ok, but I felt that it showed the completion was definitely rigged in some ways. The rapper who was sent to Los Angeles immediately was judged by only Chance the Rapper and Lupe Fiasco in a relatively informal environment, and Chance didn't have to come to an agreement with his co-stars first. Every artist needed to be tested on the exact same grounds and go through the same process to accurately gauge their ability to perform well under pressure, as well as meet the criteria for each judge to move forward.

  • I don't have much to say other than the judges all did a good job, in my opinion. GRANTED, as much as I love older hip-hop, I believe more judges like Quavo need to be used in the future. I felt it might have been a little unfair that most of the judges' heydays were over a decade ago. In the future, I think there should be a better mix between cemented legends and and currently hot talent.

The Contestants and Challenges: (Everyone who made it through the first regional recruitment round)

  • Before I start, I have to say I'm a little bummed out that Old Man Saxon had to be sent home. In my opinion, he and D Smoke are the most talented, and consistent, rappers showcased on the show. There are other equally awesome contestants, but there are no other rappers who bring the level of uniqueness they do. I also don't remember most of the rapper's names, so I'll try my hardest to describe them accurately if I can't name them.

  • I was fairly unimpressed with most of the contestants, but it was to no fault of their own. In fact, it's actually sad that all of them come from nearly identical life situations and rapping seems to be their life's calling and ticket out of crippling poverty. I felt bad that I was rolling my eyes when people shared their life story with the judges, but nearly everyone on the competition has the same struggles and it doesn't set them apart from their peers. Cardi B had a great point during her judging in New York when she explained that everyone has some kind of sob story but that doesn't mean they should automatically be sent ahead, regardless of their performance.

  • The recruitment rounds were genuinely entertaining, and I wished the intermittent biopics were cut and pasted in a different part of the show, in exchange for being able to watch every contestant. I offend loved the judges' feedback, as well, and appreciated what seemed to be unscripted dialogue.

  • The cyphers were entertaining and further showcased the writing skills of each contestant. I believe that it really did well in highlighting who needed more work before getting their big break without coming off as unfair and circumstantial.

  • The rap battles were ok, and it was evident who was capable and incapable of being a battle rapper. The pairings were perfect...and often too perfect. The result ended up showing off a few compelling battles juxtaposed with unengaging and uninspired boast-fests.

  • I felt indifferent with the music videos, though I believe the Rubik's Cube rapper made a horrifically bland video and deserved the axe. The Chicagoan female rapper, though an under-performer herself, at least made a video that wasn't static and had an individualistic song, to an extent. Sam Be Real, a not-so-favorite of mine, also did poorly and should have been chastised more for it. Other than those three, I believe each video stood out in its own way and did wonderful things. Caleb Colossus, D Smoke, and Londdyn B all made equally compelling songs and videos, while Troyman and Flawless both made catchy songs with stylistically adequate videos (which might honestly be more successful).

( Some Other Favorite Moments):

  • Londdyn B and Inglewood IV's rap battle
  • The videos I listed as being both good musically and cinematically
  • The Denver guy's first rap when he was being recruited
  • Nikee Turbo, in general
  • T.I.'s barely disguised disdain for Cardi B when she speaks

Overall Score: 6/10 Reason: I felt like it needed to be trimmed up a little more before being released, but I'm definitely excited for what the future holds. There also needs to be more contestants that can stand out from the pack and bring something truly unique other than being a "white rapper with a chip on his shoulder" or "a person with a struggling but close-knit family in a bad part of town" as their only sense of identity. I also know that $250,000 is a cool prize, but I hope that there is also an opportunity to sign a record deal. I know this can be done outside of the show, but it would still be nice. I'm also hoping for a segment in the coming episodes where they revisit with fan favorites who were eliminated and see how they're doing (and hopefully an Old Man Saxon and D Smoke EP).

Edit: Thanks for the surprising amount of upvotes! I was expecting to be chastised for ranting, but I tried to stay as concise as possible. I'm going to start reviewing other Netflix shows (currently working on one for the Dark Crystal series, which I admittedly hated) so if anyone knows where there is a sub I can post to I would appreciate it!

Edit: Multiple new episodes, including the finale just got put up! Time to ignore trolls in the comments and get glued to this show again lol
