Hip-Hop Listening Club of the Week #256: The Jacka - The Jack Artist

Today we'll be listening to The Jack Artist by The Jacka

Background

From wiki: The Jack Artist is the second solo album by Rapper The Jacka. The album was The Jacka's first album to be released on his independent label "The Artist Records" and was sold "Straight out of the trunk" and sold an incredible number of units.

I'm way too late on this already, so I'm just going to copy a section of this 2005 review of the album:

The first thing that makes "The Jack Artist" so dope is the production by Rob Lo. Though Maki and Mob Figaz's own Husalah both contribute strong tracks to the album, Rob Lo is the common denominator that takes every song to the next level. "Never Blink" features a soulful voice sample and smooth piano accompaniment along with a commanding bass line. "Iller Clip" is just as soulful, but this time features a sweet string sample along with another dope voice sample on the hook. Maki's "Barney (More Crime)" maintains the albums soulful and melodic vibe with a cascading voice sample and another attention grabbing bass line. By now some of you may be thinking Rob Lo is just another producer cashing in on Kanye's sample resurgence, but Rob Lo and his Blahk Operah Muzic have crafted a style on their own. It maintains the Bay area's love for deep bass lines that play center stage, but manages to balance that with extremely soulful and emotional melodies. Even when Rob Lo goes into party mode, the beats are as soulful as anything else on the album. "Girls Say" would be playing on radios across the nation were it not for the fact that Jacka is an independent artist. The bass line plays the melody this time around, layered with soft bells and well placed female voice samples. "Get Out There" features a smooth R&B hook as well outstanding instrumentation by Rob Lo.

I live in Antioch, California. It's the last place you can legitimately go east and still claim the bay area (sorry Brentwood and Oakley you can't sit with us). Just last month I started noticing a shit ton of flyers around town about a mega three day Coachella-esque music festival headlined by Mistah FAB, Ludacris, and of course, TI. When I saw this I could only think to myself "what asshole is passing around fake flyers" but when i talked to the owner of my go to hookah lounge (shout out to my boy Abdul from Sultana) he reaffirmed that it was legit and that he would be providing hookah to the performers backstage.... Hmmmm..

Why Antioch? A town on the outskirts of the bay. You might have heard of us from that one girl who was kidnapped for 18 years and then was saved out of shear luck, Jaycee Dugard, remember her? Yeah we have a girl who was kidnapped for 2 decades and the director of Sharknado as our claim to fame (Also Kevin Pereira, who I hope to god had a thing for his sake with Olivia Munn on attack of the show, I guess he's cool too). As you can tell there's no real reason to live here, but rent will cost you a kidney if you want live anywhere else and on a good day getting to San Francisco will only take 45ish minutes without traffic.

Fast forward to less than 24 hours before the festival starts and rumors are WILD about how less than 1,000 tickets were sold and sponsors were falling off faster than a dress on prom night; news finally breaks that the show is cancelled... Apparently nobody had noticed the show runners we two lovely gentleman from Fremont that had been previously convicted of fraud. Way to go Antioch.

Now, this is a weird thing that has been said to me by multiple girls actually, uh they go "you know what'd be fun, is we woke up in the morning, and you were like already fucking me..." I'm like, you mean raping you? WTF why you trying to get me caught up? Doesn't that sound like a set up? That's how I'm in jail for 10yrs because of some fantasy that you had. You never had a girl say that? Like how we just wake up...

Charlamagne: So she was drunk and shit, and we had sex and shit, and like a lot of my boys were trying to come in the room and fuck her and I'm like nah chill out, we not doing that, I'm not gonna let y'all run a train on her, that's rape. So, right, so, so...

Charlamagne: So the next morning, the next morning she wakes up and uhm, we talk about it. And she's like "What happened?" I'm like "We had sex." she said "Ok well I'm glad it was you." Then a couple days later, she's like "Yo are you sure I only had sex with you?" Because one of my stupid ass cousins was going around saying he fucked her, which he didn't, I know for a fact he didn't. I was there with her the whole time. He did not fuck her. He looked at her naked, but he didn't fuck her. Right? So, so, so... I'm telling her no me and you just had sex, nobody else did nothing. So it just was weird that she was like, "I'm just glad it was you." You know what I'm saying, because in mind yea you could have been in a real bad situation if it was another motherfucker there...

Andrew: That's a huge compliment man. A girl just said, "yo at least you raped me."

Charlamagne: I didn't rape her. I did not rape her. I did not rape her.

Andrew: If it was any of your cousins or friends... it would have been rape.

Charlamagne: It was just weird because while we were having sex, she was... because one of my homeboys used to fuck her on the regular. When I say the regular, the regular... that was his girl. He hates me probably to this day.

Andrew: Wait, so you fucked your friends girl?

Charlamagne: I was a piece of shit. It wasn't his girl tho, it was like a girl he used to really love. So this is the whole story... The girl was white right, and he was black... so this is in Monks Corner, South Carolina... they couldn't really have an inter-racial relationship at the time, dixie flag flying over and shit, right, they couldn't be... it couldn't really go down. So they couldn't really claim each other, you know what I'm saying... but it was one of those weekends she just mad at the motherfucker, and came to get drunk with me, and I had been flirting with her, and we had been talking on the phone, we kiss every now and then.

Andrew: This is your boy's girl...

Charlamagne: This is my boy's... He should have claimed her.

Andrew: Which boy?

Charlamagne: I'm not saying..

Andrew: Do I know him?

Charlamagne: Nah you don't know him. He should have claimed her.

Andrew: Was he at your wedding?

Charlamagne: Hell no. Absolutely not. But its like, we knew it was going to happen but it was just the fact that it could have been really bad for her, is my point. The fact that she woke up the next day and was like "I'm just glad it was you, and just you." was weird to me... that was a little strange.

Andrew: I like the fact that you made yourself a hero in this story.

Charlamagne: I did. I'm the Dr. Dre. I wrote... I wrote this... straight out of Monks corner. I wrote this.

Andrew: Sweetheart they was trying to come in the room... they were trying, after I drugged you and you passed out... they were trying to come in and get some pussy but I said no.

Charlamagne: I did not drug her, and pass out....

This is the voting thread, comment a song that you think should be on the playlist, but check to see if it has been commented already. The top 50 comments will win.

RULES:

  • ONE SONG PER COMMENT

  • Songs must have been released in the last 2 months (exceptions are possible if an older song suddenly blows up, or if a song stays popular for a long time)

  • Try to make sure your song suggestions are on streaming services since that's where the playlists will be made.

  • Only the top 3 songs of one artist will make the playlist

Charlamagne was accused of raping a 15 year old girl in 2001, he plead to contributing to the delinquency of a minor and got 3 years probation. The girl, who's mother prevented her from going to the trial, is now trying to reopen the case.

Ski Mask The Slump God and Trippie Redd never perform at 2018 XXL Freshman Class Live concert in NYC. Crowd leaves angry and demand refunds.

The 2018 XXL Freshman concert at Terminal 5 in NYC was billed to have Ski Mask The Slump God, Smokepurpp, J.I.D., Stefflon Don, BlocBoy JB, Wifisfuneral, and Trippie Redd perform. Apparently however, neither Ski Mask nor Trippie were at the show which led many fans to become angry and one Snapchat from the show suggested a riot nearly broke out. Wether XXL knew in advance that the two headliners would not be there or if they both no showed is not clear yet. Another fuck up by XXL with this years freshman list. At this point XXL will just have to munch on these Ls and hope to do better with next years class.
