Hip-Hop Listening Club of the Week #256: The Jacka - The Jack Artist

Today we'll be listening to The Jack Artist by The Jacka

Background

From wiki: The Jack Artist is the second solo album by Rapper The Jacka. The album was The Jacka's first album to be released on his independent label "The Artist Records" and was sold "Straight out of the trunk" and sold an incredible number of units.

I'm way too late on this already, so I'm just going to copy a section of this 2005 review of the album:

The first thing that makes "The Jack Artist" so dope is the production by Rob Lo. Though Maki and Mob Figaz's own Husalah both contribute strong tracks to the album, Rob Lo is the common denominator that takes every song to the next level. "Never Blink" features a soulful voice sample and smooth piano accompaniment along with a commanding bass line. "Iller Clip" is just as soulful, but this time features a sweet string sample along with another dope voice sample on the hook. Maki's "Barney (More Crime)" maintains the albums soulful and melodic vibe with a cascading voice sample and another attention grabbing bass line. By now some of you may be thinking Rob Lo is just another producer cashing in on Kanye's sample resurgence, but Rob Lo and his Blahk Operah Muzic have crafted a style on their own. It maintains the Bay area's love for deep bass lines that play center stage, but manages to balance that with extremely soulful and emotional melodies. Even when Rob Lo goes into party mode, the beats are as soulful as anything else on the album. "Girls Say" would be playing on radios across the nation were it not for the fact that Jacka is an independent artist. The bass line plays the melody this time around, layered with soft bells and well placed female voice samples. "Get Out There" features a smooth R&B hook as well outstanding instrumentation by Rob Lo.

I live in Antioch, California. It's the last place you can legitimately go east and still claim the bay area (sorry Brentwood and Oakley you can't sit with us). Just last month I started noticing a shit ton of flyers around town about a mega three day Coachella-esque music festival headlined by Mistah FAB, Ludacris, and of course, TI. When I saw this I could only think to myself "what asshole is passing around fake flyers" but when i talked to the owner of my go to hookah lounge (shout out to my boy Abdul from Sultana) he reaffirmed that it was legit and that he would be providing hookah to the performers backstage.... Hmmmm..

Why Antioch? A town on the outskirts of the bay. You might have heard of us from that one girl who was kidnapped for 18 years and then was saved out of shear luck, Jaycee Dugard, remember her? Yeah we have a girl who was kidnapped for 2 decades and the director of Sharknado as our claim to fame (Also Kevin Pereira, who I hope to god had a thing for his sake with Olivia Munn on attack of the show, I guess he's cool too). As you can tell there's no real reason to live here, but rent will cost you a kidney if you want live anywhere else and on a good day getting to San Francisco will only take 45ish minutes without traffic.

Fast forward to less than 24 hours before the festival starts and rumors are WILD about how less than 1,000 tickets were sold and sponsors were falling off faster than a dress on prom night; news finally breaks that the show is cancelled... Apparently nobody had noticed the show runners we two lovely gentleman from Fremont that had been previously convicted of fraud. Way to go Antioch.
