If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

[DISCUSSION] Music by Women - July 2018

Posted: 29 Jul 2018 10:57 AM PDT

Hello! Welcome to a thread that has plans to continue on the last Sunday of every month!

This thread intends to give visibility to artists with intersections that may get overlooked in the realm of hip hop (and the music industry in general).

Treat this as you would any daily music discussion, but keep on the topic of solo acts or bands fronted by and/or consisting of female and gender non-conforming people, from any genre and time period. Anything you've heard recently that you like? Anything you've re-visited? Been to any good shows? Are you a musician yourself? Links are strongly encouraged.

This is meant to be a positive space to uplift artists, rather than exclusively critique!

I'm looking forward to reading what everyone has to share! Comments on how to structure this monthly project are encouraged as well!

This project was inspired and is in collaboration with u/sara520 and r/indieheads, check out their Music by Women thread as well!

Rappers to Keep Eye On: Toronto part 2

Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:57 PM PDT

Last week I had some good responses so I wanna continue my list. I actually want to write a weekly list of artist that have some sort of buzz in the city for the next couple of weeks. I also want it to be digestible enough for people to check out everyone with be overwhelmed by so many artist. Enough talking lets just right into it.

---

Who: SpiceGurlPurp

Music Pages: Soundcloud

Lastest Project: None

Songs to Checkout:

SpicegurlPurp is a very different artist from the rest of the list. Not so much a street rapper, her audience mostly from the internet. Also doesn't hurt that she has a music video featured on Elevator's youtube channel. She's a goth chick rapping on hard beats, with a smooth flow. Her style kinda reminds me of spaceghostpurp era Florida rap, but has those pianos that a lot of Toronto beats are based on. By far the most accessible Toronto artist on the list, don't need a degree in Toronto mandem slang, just turn it on and turn up.

---

Who: Jordan Solomon

Music Pages: Soundcloud

Lastest Project: None

Songs to Checkout:

Though Jordan is not from the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) being from Burlington, I'm gonna give him an exception cause his music too good to skip over. Mans vibes are mad wild. He's like a charasmatic NAV, with just perfect execution on the music. Honestly he has no duds, at least to me. What sets him apart from NAV is the beat selection (Shout PhantumBeats them beats crazy) and he knows when to bring energy. He's really not that organized with his releases but I see such a bright future if this guy has some sort of label or management team behind him. Again highly recommended.

---

Who: SAFE

Music Pages: Youtube

Lastest Project: Stay Down

Songs to Checkout:

Dreamteam 878 aka Halal Gang member SAFE, is a talented R&B artist from Regret Park area that has Drake mentoring the him. What can I say that a lot of people haven't about this guy. His sound is kinda like a combination of the Weeknd and Drake mixed in with a little bit of auto-tune. Dark lyrics, and darker visuals. The production, is other worldly, with turns on every beat switch that make you wanna listen more. The man is just talented. Can't wait to see where his path goes.

---

Who: TG

Music Pages: Youtube (Inactivate tho)

Lastest Project: None

Songs to Checkout:

TG is a fairly new artist on my radar, I've been trying to find as much information but can't really find it. But the mans can really rap. Toronto Street Rapper without the glock talk in every line. His flow is like if Meek Millz was raised on the streets of Toronto, straight fyia. So far I can only find 5 songs n a feature (under TG n Top Gunna) but he's 4 for 5, straight quality. Also havin Roney premiering the music videos on his channel is kinda like a seal of approval from the Toronto street rapper OG. I'm looking forward of seeing where this man goes. '

---

Who: Lil Berete

Music Page: Youtube

Lastest Project: None

Songs to Checkout:

Lil Berete has accomplished a lot in 8 months. In a short amount of time his music videos have been getting millions of views, and everyone talking of how long will it take until he has the worlds attention. He sounds a lot like NBA Youngboy but with Toronto flair and a little bit of Young Thug mixed in. His melodies are fuego n his voice rides the beat in different ways that make you want to listen for some more. Check it out.

---

And with that, that concludes this weeks write up. If your from Toronto and have some suggestions for other people write em down or write a post. Also thanks for the feedback last week, honestly trying to do my best with this. The end goal is to expose more people into the music we got here. Sometimes it feels like the music culture is so isolated, so if I can get one person from somewhere in the world to enjoy the music we got here in Toronto, that's awesome. Next week is Carabana in the city, so if your in Toronto tun up, if not then you're missin out.
