Our Kanye podcast, Watching the Throne, is one of only 33 podcasts chosen to be part of the SXSW Podcast Stage! **AMA** about Kanye, our show, podcasting, SXSW, Austin, Dragon Ball Z, etc.

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 02:30 PM PDT

You may remember us from our AMA last year! We got to participate in the first ever Podcast Stage. Were the second show to ever be on the Podcast Stage. Now we're returning, making us the first and only two-time Podcast Stage participant. I'd like to say it's because we have an awesome show. But really the secret is just being willing to fill in for whoever couldn't make it. On that "5 beats a day for 3 summers" kind of grind.

https://schedule.sxsw.com/2018/events/PP99990

We have over 150 episodes. We go album by album, track by track, line by line through Kanye's discography, exploring and deconstructing his narrative and thematic artistry (and development as a narrative artist). Our main thesis being that Graduation, MBDTF, Yeezus, and TLOP are concept albums.

We had 700 plays in 2015. 70,000 in 2016. 200,000+ in 2017.

We also have an interview series called "My StorYe". We've interviewed regular, every day fans. We've interviewed DeMario Jackson (The Bachelorette). Tyler Barstow (co-founder Vinyl Me Please). Nia Hill (actress, wife of Bill Burr). The biggest being Joe Perez, who curated Kanye's blog for two years and was the lead art director at DONDA for 6. We have StorYe's in the works with an NFL player, someone from Overwatch League, and an executive at Adidas. Which blows my mind. It's incredible how many people love Kanye.

So, please, ask us anything you want about Kanye. His music. Fashion. Legacy. Reputation. Or about podcasting—maybe you're wanting to get into the game or already have a show. Or what SXSW is like. What Austin is like. Or, hey, I love Dragon Ball Z, too. So we can just talk about that.

You can listen to the show on itunes, Spotify, Audiomack, and if you want another go ahead and ask.

Cheers,

Chris & Travis

Edit: We'll be answering questions the rest of the day!

Edit: We've talked before about how MBDTF has a similar structure to Wizard of Oz. Remember, MBDTF came out 11/22/2010. Kanye said this in September of 2010:

"Who's seen the play Wicked? I've seen it 4 times! Other than loving the music acting and costumes ... it's my story!!! The Wicked witch of the west basically is so convicted to tell her truth when she does it she is outcasted by society and turned WICKED."

I don't think it's that ridiculous to think that if Kanye saw Wicked 4 times and felt it was his story...that he wouldn't have gone back and re-watched Wizard of Oz and how the Wicked Witch's story ends....

I just found this out, so I'm pretty excited about it right now.

6ix9ine is attempting to steal someone's music

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 11:38 AM PDT

Got It Got It is a song by Packman featuring 6ix9ine that was released back in January. Yesterday, 6ix9ine uploaded and quickly deleted a video stating that it's an unreleased song that's called G.E.D, and doesn't have any features. I asked Packman about him being removed for his own song, and he said that he cannot do that..

I assumed that he deleted the video for that reason, but he uploaded another videopreviewing his verse, and says now he's making a video. Now, every post from Packman about Got It Got It has been deleted except for one from Feb. 16. and it's been removed from Spotify.

Packman is now calling 6ix9ine out for stealing his chain and his music.

Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week #241: MIKE - WINTER NEW YORK - HipHop

Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week #241: MIKE - WINTER NEW YORK - HipHop

Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week #241: MIKE - WINTER NEW YORK

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 06:37 AM PST

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

This week we'll be listening to WINTER NEW YORK by MIKE.

Background

provided by /u/mikeest

Over the past few years, hip hop has been marked by the resurgence of a 'lo-fi' sound, often accompanied by rappers whose understated deliveries deal with topics such as depression and mental health. If you go prowling through the dark recesses of Bandcamp and especially Soundcloud you're bound to encounter an abundance of poorly formed bedroom whine sessions with Anime covers and titles 'l i k e t h i s'. As such it could be easy to dismiss MIKE from a distance. A teenager with an unnecessarily captialised rap name talking about his personal problems into a muddy mix.

But after a short while it becomes very apparent that MIKE belongs in his own category. With a voice eerily reminiscent of Mick Jenkins and a flow that pierces through the washed out soul samples he uses, MIKE practically spits out his words, there's an emphatic quality that few rappers possess. In the hands of a lesser rapper a lot his music could be called sleepy, but here the relaxed atmosphere is marked by an occasional sense of urgency.

As the title suggests New York is a prominent part of MIKE's music, but he's able to portray the most over represented city in hip hop in his own unique terms. This isn't the hellish landscape of Cannibal Ox or Mobb Deep, and it's not some hipster paradise either. MIKE exists perfectly in the middle between these 2 worlds. This is everyman rap, he's a product of the city, he's witness to the same New York grit we hear so much about in hip hop, but he lives more in his own head than in any simple image of New York.

MIKE himself describes the album as follows:

WINTER NEW YORK is a project which auras around the past couple years of my life. Its based on how the more physical things I became connected with, the less connection I had within myself and lost that voice in my head.

This loose, dreamy quality is present throughout, it really feels as if we're in the head of a young guy floating aimlessly between phases of his life, nostalgic for a time that he can't quite recall. That idea describes a lot of what MIKE represents. He's still very young, he still has his flaws, but he doesn't shy away from any of this and there's a subtle wisdom that hovers around his work. This isn't MIKE's first work, and it's not his best either, but this project is the point where he started evolving into one of the most unique, skilled, and genuinely insightful rappers of the last few years.

Disclaimer: If you like this, or if you want to like MIKE, I recommend giving a chance to May God Bless Your Hustle, Longest Day Shortest Night, or By the Water. Even if you aren't overly impressed by this, I urge you not to give up on MIKE yet.

  • Voting for best hook will close 24 hours from the time this was posted

  • Taking suggestions for next week just DM me!

Introduction: Hello r/hiphopheads, I will be running the best hook thread once a week every Sunday! This will be run very similarly to the Best Verse Threads we had a while ago, as you can see the format is almost identical to the old threads. All you have to do is just post your favorite Lil Wayne hook with a link to the hook. And if you want to, you can quote the hook word for word in your comment. The comment with the most upvotes will be deemed that artists best hook! And at the end of the year we will decide the best hook of the ones we collected! This is my first time doing anything like this so any recommendations to formatting, anything else helpful would be great!
