| Posted: 14 Jan 2018 12:20 AM PST It's late at night, I can't sleep, and i'm bored so i'm gonna make this for anyone who is a new rapper or someone who's thinking about becoming a rapper in 2018. I don't know what this information is worth since I only have about a thousand followers, but fuck it, i felt like I've made a few mistakes and learned a lot of things of my many years of being a hip hop artist. I don't know who the fuck is going to read this shit. It might get downvoted up the ass, it might get 3 upvotes, or it might get a lot of attention, who knows, I don't care. Before you ask me who I am, i'm not going to tell you. I made this reddit account for shitposting and I don't want it to have any connections to my image as an artist. EDIT: Sorry for any mistakes, i'm tired as fuck, ill fix em later. Edit the next day:Since this shit got a lot of attention im gonna go ahead and put a faq at the end of the post. like i said before i'll fix more mistakes and elaborate more. thanks for reading. Promo When you start out as an artist, DO NOT purchase any promo packages for the first year or two you have been rapping. Unless you have so much money that you can choose to flush some of it down the toilet at any given time, save it and use it to PAY YOUR PRODUCERS (we'll get to that later). There are plenty of artists that have blown up overnight and you might be one of them. When you start out you are going to get TONS of emails (if you put your email in your bio) from people who claim to have connections with major artists/labels and they're gonna link you to twitter profiles that have hundreds of thousands of followers... IGNORE THEM. They just want your money, they're going to finesse you, and you're going to regret it. I thought that I was cautious enough to screen out who is fake from the real in these emails, but I wasn't and i made a stupid mistake and I got finessed for $100. Also, remember that word of mouth STILL goes a long way, usually if you are friends with someone, they will be a lot more active in listening and sharing you music because either they genuinely enjoy it or they're doing it just because you're friends. Both reasons are perfectly fine and it works a lot better with friends in real life than with friends online, in my opinion. Don't be afraid to tell people that you already know that you're a rapper. At first I was too, but if you're doing it long enough eventually they're gonna find out anyway. There's no reason to hide it. Later on in your career, if you haven't reached your goals, consider buying small promotion packages. But do your research first... use twitteraudit on twitter promo accounts to verify if they have real followers, google them, ask your music associates about promo, etc. I would start out with smaller packages because for example, if you want twitter promo and someone is charging $30 for a tweet for 1 day, $50 for 2 days, and $100 for 5 days, buy the 1 day package because once a tweet is on that account for two days it will get buried and it is no longer useful for the link to be on that account if the tweet isn't gaining any traction. However if the tweet starts gaining attraction and getting a lot of retweets consider contacting the promo company to get an extension. Basically, test the waters before jumping in. Social Media Social media is VERY important to your career. Your accounts should be set up PERFECTLY. Make sure all of your links work. It is VERY important that you make sure that when you're creating your username have ALL of your usernames be the exact same thing. It's a plus to have your avi as the same thing as well, but not as important as the username. Don't have numbers in your username except if your name has numbers in it like 6lack or 6ix9ine does. Don't have twitter as @brandon17u0534 and your instagram is @tidepodOD67. Make it as easy as possible for people to find you on whatever social media they frequent. Also, know what the demographic of the websites you promote yourself on. If you're an artsy bitch (guys included) and wanna be lowkey, really weird, and u the type to use a random ass pic u found on ur phone as the cover of your mixtape, use twitter, instagram, and soundcloud as your main platforms. If u stuck in 2005, and wanna look as clean cut and professional as possible, use facebook and youtube and do all of your releases on apple music and all that shit. Try to figure out who you think your fanbase is going to be and promote yourself there. I, admittedly, and alot of even established artists still have trouble with this as it can be a very hard concept to grasp. You will have a REAL leg up on the competition if you can find this out. Forums If you don't frequent forums and aren't planning to, don't even bother. You might get a few comments and they're all going to be negative even if they lowkey enjoy the music. From what I've seen, forums are like family. You have close family that always talks to each other, you have the kids just doing whatever, and that brother that comes around every 5 years asking for money. When you just throw your links out there on forums like shit at the wall, they're going to look at you as if you were that brother. If you DO frequent forums already about hip hop discussion, you probably already know how and where to post your music on their site. Chances are if you want to use forums only to promote your music, you're going to get bored of it and you're not going to want to post your music on there anymore. Musical Content This subject is tricky. I'm not going to tell you how to make your music, but i will give you what I can. Every established artist has great content. From Kendrick Lamar to Lil Pump. There HAS to be a reason why people choose to listen to YOUR music over anybody elses and you have to make room for yourself in the rap game. I don't believe that there is a specified "room" size for anyone in the rap game, in other words, I don't believe in the phrase "there isn't enough room". There is always enough room, you just have to prove to OTHERS that you are truly unique. For example there is PLENTY of room for a gay rapper that raps about sucking dick and getting fucked in the ass... did anybody take that room? not that i'm aware of. If more rappers come in the game with different content that has nothing to do with that, will it take that space? absolutely not. Just try to do something that nobody else does and do it well. Image Your image matters. Everyone wants to make it as that random ass dude making music that doesn't give a shit about anything (i think). But the truth is, that doesn't cut it. You have to have one overall attitude that is different from your competition. Weather it be in the music or how you look, it all matters. To put things in perspective what would your reaction if someone like Bones tweeted "AY WHATSUP BITCH IM IN CHICAGO I NEED BITCHES, LEAN, AND XANAX WHATS GOOD!???" you'd be pretty shoked and that will throw off a lot of his core fans. You need to have some sort of shock value and it needs to be different than everyone else if you want to make it. This doesn't mean pretend to be someone else, try to find something within yourself that you think would grab people's attention. Record Labels Don't, No, Never, Doesn't Matter, Look away, will never matter, tell them to fuck off, no ifs ands or buts, end of story. Producers Find a producer that matches your style and image and stick with them. Producers love to see that, Rappers love to see that, fans love to see that. Nothing makes people happier than seeing a rapper and producer make it together. ALWAYS PAY YOUR PRODUCERS! Avoid the drama, don't steal beats, if you do download a beat from youtube and use it on accident thinking it was a free beat, apologize to the producer and either pay for the lease or take the song down until you have the money to pay for it. Even if the producer is an asshole about it, don't beef with him back, he has a good reason to be upset with you about it. Try to resolve the situation with the goal of the most positive outcome. Don't pay for exclusives right away (unless they're really cheap which some of them may be), use a free beat or cop a lease and see how the song does and then if it gains traction, contact the producer to see if you can upgrade to an exclusive. Always try to credit the producer in the title of a work if it's a free beat or a lease, exclusives are not required, but it is a big plus. Contact the producer to see if they will tweet, retweet, or promote the song for free. Some of them might, you never know until you try. Beef It's not worth it. There is no reason for small artists to beef. We're all trying to reach basically the same goals and we all want to live in peace. Don't talk shit about shit on twitter and if you see someone else talking shit don't talk more shit. Try to stay in your own lane. I admit sometimes the beef can be fun and sometimes you gotta say fuck it and do it anyway, but there really is no excuse for it. If you really wanna talk some shit say it on a song or something. Let the music talk the shit. Theres nothing in this world that pisses more people off than facts. If you're doing big numbers, let that talk. Keep ya mouf shut lol. Shows Don't pay to get a set. Let them come to you, that's what promoters are for. Other than that, i'm not really experienced in this area. Features Don't let people trick you into getting you to feature on their track for free. Doesn't matter if you charge $10 for a feature. The only people you should be giving free features for is your friends and close musical associates. Don't let that dude thats been liking ur tracks for a month try to tell u he fucks with u heavy and wants you on a track. Give em the cold hard fax. However, this doesn't mean don't try to finesse free features from others lol. Some people do free features for everybody, personally I think that's a bad idea, but hey that's their hustle and you just got a free feature. Also, don't get discouraged if you sent a verse out and the artist either never released the song or left your verse off. It's their music and they felt like your verse didn't fit on the track, or other reasons, but don't take that as disrespect, they just want to put out good music. Taking Advice Don't take advice lol. I know this whole thing is advice but nobody knows what they're talking about, including me. You have a brain, use it. What worked for someone else maybe isn't going to work with you. Music Videos Don't pay for them right away. Host your videos on your own youtube channel. Think about what Lil B did, and still does, with his videos. They're all shot it one day, no crazy edits or shoots. Probably started out filming with someone he knows locally. That's a great way to start. Be from where you are from and try to utilize the talents of people that you already know. That doesn't go with just videos, that goes with everything. Try to maximize the use of what you have to limits that people may have not even seen before. You never know how much you really have to work with. Stretch your boundaries. Self Production Learn how to mix your vocals. Experiment with different effects. Go on youtube and watch tutorials and build on that. If you want to make your own beats, thats a plus. Gimmicks It took Joji 10+ years to convert from making filthy frank videos to making Joji music. If you want to get clout quick by using a gimmick, understand the consequences, and try to figure out a way to convert that into a lifelong career. This is not recommended AT ALL as it rarely works out for anyone in the long run. Third Wheeling For every xxxtentacion there is a ski mask the slump god, for every asap rocky there is a ferg. If you're OK with being a sidekick, go for it. If you want to be on top, you're either gonna want to glo up more than your homie or distance yourself from them. It's a hard thing to do but it must be talked about. That's pretty much all I got for now. I'm pretty tired and it's getting harder and harder to focus and elaborate. Tell me what you think about it so far and tell me things that you want me to add on to it. If you think that i'm a retard and I should kill myself because this post is a bunch of bullshit and nobody cares, tell me that. | DJ Premier's Detox: the story behind the unreleased NYG'z album "Hustlaz Union" Posted: 14 Jan 2018 01:23 PM PST Every hip-hop listener knows about the Detox phenomenon: after the Chronic 2001 album, the rumors started to spread about Dre's follow-up album, Detox. Dre was always considered a perfectionist, but this album counted as the first album in hip-hop's history that made fans wait for way too long. Years went by, and the wait became so long and so tiring, that eventually demos started to leak out of the album, which – according to certain individuals – resulted in Dre becoming less enthusiastic about creating the album. The word "Detox" eventually became synonymous with an album that had an built up the anticipation to eventually just die down, due to the artist holding on to the project for way too long. Eventually – before releasing his Compton LP – Dre announced that the Detox album will not be released. Although according to recent news, Dre is considering to release the album again, in 2018 the amount of people who would care for such a project would only be a fragment of what it could have been a decade ago. However, there is an album on the East Coast that was shelved for even longer than Detox. And it is entirely produced by a person who to this very day, is in conversation with Dr. Dre about whether Dre or him is the greatest producer of all time. That person is DJ Premier. And it is probably last unreleased piece of music by DJ Premier that actually sounds like how DJ Premier sounded like when he was on top of his production game. It is an album called Hustlaz Union, by the NYG'z. Who are these guys and why do Premier made an album with them? There are a number of collaborative projects that came to mind to be released by Premier, fans are dreaming and theorizing about Premier working on a full-length project with Nas, KRS-One or Jay-Z, even Fat Joe mentioned that he signed Premier to Terror Squad, and he gave Premier half a million dollars to produce a Terror Squad LP which never came out. But even in the early days of the Gang Starr Foundation – just like any other producer nowadays, whether they do boombap or trap beats – Premier and Guru felt an urge to challenge themselves by bringing relatively unknown people into the game and build them, in a way to give them the chance to shine, and also to prove their worthiness in a way. That's how the first two Jeru The Damaja albums were created, and that is how Group Home's Livin' Proof was created, all three albums considered underground classics of the 90's. Jeru The Damaja is considered a great MC, and one of hip-hop's greatest story tellers – although the same cannot be stated about Group Home's lyrical ability, especially when it comes to Melachi The Nutcracker with him "rocking on the block with the real hip-hop" with the content of tracks like Suspended in Time. What the Group Home album proved however is that Premier is one of the best producer's to ever work in hip-hop, being able to create iconic piece of art with even a two man group who are by all standards feel average. For the people who would want something more complex than Group Home, but maybe they don't feel Jeru's lyricism who although had good lyrics, he also had a tendency of being preachy at times – hence why the beef happened between him and Bad Boy – the NYG'z might be the middle route choice, them being able to blend street scenarios with lyricism relatively well. The NYG'z – originally known as Operation Ratification, consisting of Panch (fka Panchi The Wild Comanchee) and Shabeeno (fka Suicide the Survivor, then Shiggy Sha) – made their first appearance on Guru's Ill Kid Records compilation amongst others such as M.O.P., Big Shug, Jeru, the Group Home, and Bahamadia, on a track called Rotten Apple. Panch also did vocals on Guru's 2nd Jazzmatazz album for a track called Choice of Weapons and for a track called Win The G for O.C.'s Jewelz album, while Shiggy Sha has a verse on The Mall from the Moment of Truth album by Gang Starr. Their first appearance as NYG'z was on the Ownerz album besides Hannibal Stax on the "Same Team, No Games" track, and in 2007 they released their debut album called "Welcome 2 G-Dom", featuring numerous tracks produced by Premier, and a video for the track "Ya Dayz R #'d". But why is it such a problem if this album won't see the light of day? The NYG'z album might be the only remaining piece of finished music that features music from the times when DJ Premier's production still had value to it. After his departure from long time tour manager Biggest Gord and manager Phat Gary, DJ Premier partnered up with Ian Schwartzmann, and with that also came a switch in his production. DJ Premier was always known for updating his formula, however in this instance, the transition ended up deteriorating a sound that many listeners fell in love with. After 2 decades of using the Akai MPC60II combined with the Akai S950, which could make everything sound dirty and grimy in a magical way, DJ Premier switched to the MPC Renaissance: resulting in a plastic sound that feels like stock sounds and cheesy sound banks instead of sampling rare grooves or chopping up break loops. The NYG'z album is Premier's final project that could quintessentially sound like Premier, even so that the leaks and the beats we've heard so far surpassed not only the beats Premier did post-Renaissance, but even some of the full-length projects he did while holding onto the Hustlaz Union album. Because there are leaks. And said leaks have a nature to them that make the case of this album remaining unreleased – even in 2018 – extremely absurd. Throughout the years DJ Premier released some of the tracks that would've been on the album, either on the Year Round Records compilation, or on the single he released with Serato. What makes it absurd however is that besides the video of a meeting of Premier previewing the NYG'z album in the presence Panch, Premier also pretty much played the whole album in 2 second snippets on his radio show, and the actual tracklist of the album has been found in a video that was shot before HeadQCourterz Studios (originally known as D&D) shut down, from a tracklist that was tagged up by Evidence of Dilated Peoples. It's more than possible that a decade went by since the album's recording sessions were finished. Premier comes from an age where physical copies and anticipation was an investment that would return, but for such a minor group like the NYG'z, they barely stand a chance even if the album bangs the hell out with a standard that was something to stand by a decade ago, and ultimately the album would not be a success streaming-wise either, considering the fact that he sabotaged the minor buzz this album had by delaying it for such a long time. From 2010 to this very year, DJ Premier has been constantly stating that "I'm mixing the album and we will release it in <insert a time period between 3 to 18 months>". Even Panch has been cracking jokes about album situation on social media. While Dr. Dre is indeed a perfectionist, even he could tell the people that he will not release the album that people were waiting for over a decade, also he could admit it if he shelved an album – even if admitting to do so can be unpleasant. DJ Premier to this very day gives false hope to his loyal fan base by saying that the NYG'z album is about to come soon: leaving them in a state of gradually losing any anticipation that comes to following the veterans of the hip-hop game.
