If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

[DISCUSSION] El-P - Cancer for Cure (10th anniversary)

Posted: 21 May 2022 08:31 AM PDT

El-P's 3rd solo release was released in May 22nd 2012.

Background from Wikipedia:

The album is dedicated to El-P's friend and fellow rapper Camu Tao, who died of lung cancer in May 2008 at the age of 30. In an interview with Rolling Stone, El-P said, "Camu was a huge inspiration on this record, mostly because he had a huge effect on my life and who I am." He elaborated, "I think that I'm trying to create an idea or illustrate a thought pattern, just because there's darkness that I see and think about, it doesn't mean I've given into it. I think the record is ultimately about not giving into it. For the most part I'm struggling with that darkness throughout the record. When I say it's about wanting to live, I just say that because that's how I feel. When you get hit with death, sometimes as horrible as it is, one of the things that can come out of it is a reaffirmation of how much you don't want to go, and I think that's what happened with me."

How do y'all feel about this record after a decade?

Statement from Doja :

Hi guys. wanted you to hear it from me first. Unfortunately I have to have surgery on my tonsils asap. The surgery is routine but the recovery is going to take awhile due to swelling. That means I have to cancel my festival run this summer as well as The Weeknd tour. I feel horrible about this but can't wait for this to heal and get back to making music and create an experience for yʻall.

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Boldy James & Real Bad Man - Killing Nothing

Posted: 21 May 2022 10:51 AM PDT

It's been over 24 hours, what are your initial thoughts on the new album?

For me personally, there hadn't been an album released this year that I immediately loved until this one. Boldy sounds so comfortable over seemingly any kind of production, but the pockets he finds in these Real Bad Man beats are especially nice. I may even prefer this pairing to the Boldy-Alchemist projects but it's too early to say that for sure.

[DISCUSSION] What does "replay value" mean for you?

Posted: 21 May 2022 04:37 AM PDT

As of late there has been an increasing talk about "replay value", especially with the release of Kendricks latest album and the recent sales figures of said album. As Kendrick "only" sells 286k first week, I've wondered what is the reason for such a low figure. It's not low in general, but considering the 5 year gap and the accumulated hype, I've been expecting something around 400-500k. Sales are not everything, but sales do kinda reflect how the masses conceived the album.

I've encountered many reasons why that might have happened, but the term "replay value" stuck out the most.

What is "replay value" for you? Many consider Kendricks album to be a masterpiece with low replay value, but isn't good music classified as "good music" when it has high replay value?

So in the end, could it mean that commercial songs is actual good music, because it's catchy and makes you want to comeback? I actually like songs with a message, BUT it has to sound good in the first place before I dissect the message of a song. Musically I actually prefer music that is a bit experimental mixed with familiarity. Not too off putting, but has enough oddities to make me comeback and explore it more.

What do you guys think?
