Recommended If You Like thread - February 12, 2022 Posted: 12 Feb 2022 08:00 AM PST If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want. Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z. You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z. Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats" Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question. The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music. [link] [comments] |

[DISCUSSION] Quelle Chris - Being You Is Great, I Wish I Could Be You More Often (5 Years Later) Posted: 12 Feb 2022 03:37 AM PST The official anniversary was on the 10th, but no one posted an anniversary thread. From the Bandcamp page: "The title comes from a real-life discussion about the difficulties of consistency. How each of us are subject to both our own bad spirits and bursts of inspiration, those unavoidable Serotonin and dopamine peaks and valleys. Being You is Great is an attempt to catalog those moods. It's about learning to love, or at least recognize, the best and worst of one's self. It's about loneliness and comfort. Learning to hate love and learning to love hate." Thoughts on this album? Who was the best guest feature? Did Quelle convey the theme well? Best beat? [link] [comments] |

[DISCUSSION] Lil Ugly Mane - Mista Thug Isolation (10 Years Later) Posted: 11 Feb 2022 09:53 AM PST Mista Thug Isolation was released 10 years ago today, on February 11th, 2012. Mista Thug Isolation is the debut studio album by American musician Travis Miller under the stage name Lil Ugly Mane. It was self-released via Bandcamp on February 11, 2012, with a vinyl release by Hundebiss Records. The album is entirely self-produced as Shawn Kemp, with guest appearances from Supa Sortahuman and Denzel Curry. The album attracted attention in the underground hip hop scene for its Memphis rap sound and would bring Lil Ugly Mane to mainstream popularity after also previously appearing on SpaceGhostPurrp's debut mixtape Blackland Radio 66.6 in 2011. Members of hip hop collective Odd Future Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt showed support for Lil Ugly Mane and the album, specifically the song "Throw Dem Gunz". To me, it is insane that this album is 10 years old now. In High School, I thought this album was the shit, and I still love some songs on it to this day. I also think it's crazy how Lil Ugly Mane's music has evolved since then with some of his more experimental releases. Do you guys have any fond memories of the album, and do you think it still holds up today? Do you think the album has had impact similar to Raider Klan or other notable acts in the underground scene at the time? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Feb 2022 07:21 PM PST At her peak, Mary J. Blige was fierce, a little arrogant, and, most importantly, did things on her terms. Lest we forget, she had Puff Daddy, among many other industry executives, groveling for her attention before she'd even let a syllable slip on her debut What's The 411? That's the sort of ruthless move that proved even if Blige wasn't later ascribed the title of Queen of hip-hop soul, she'd fight for it. On Good Morning Gorgeous, Blige is beyond such antics. She stops protesting for what she deserves, drops the diva instincts, and separates the voice that was appointed royalty status from the person using it. That's not to say that her days as a sassy temptress are completely behind her, though. No Blige album would be complete without at least a little bite. Failing In Love is where she builds on the salacious tension from early singles most. "Oh, I'm passin' your house/Got me wanna burn it to the ground", she sings directly to an ex that isn't deserving of her acknowledgment, especially not on a song of this quality. Blige doesn't claim to be innocent in any of these situations, she knows her mistakes and owns them with bare-knuckled grit. When she lists all of her problematic spending habits on Rent Money, she directs her audible frustration at herself, as well as the swindler that's left her at rock-bottom. But these are anomalies in a tracklist that prioritizes a quest for self-satisfaction. Blige comes first, love, and whatever else, a not so close second. Freedom can be a troubling thing for Blige who never truly acclimates to the pleasures of answering to nobody. Instincts kick in, and she's quick to turn any advances down without rationale. Anderson .Paak learns this the hard way. The Silk Sonic representative sets Blige up deliciously with the description of a picture-perfect partnership ("I write the lyrics, she make the captions"), whilst she strikes in retaliation with "I make the features and do all the casting/ Who gon' direct me with all these theatrics?", turning out one of the few verses he can't turn to gold just to prove that she answers to no one. It's expected her behavior will be excused because, as she so proudly summarizes on Amazing, "It's so hard to fake when everything I do is real". We're supposed to accept Blige for being Blige even when she sounds more like a wheezing asthmatic reciting Chris Brown on the pre-chorus of Love Will Never. There are almost as many producers as there are songs on Good Morning Gorgeous, and the scattershot roster mars any chance of finding cohesion or completeness. The rotating cast takes turns muddying Blige's crystalline self-assurance until she's so wrapped up, she bends at their will. Both D'Mile and H.E.R are behind the nauseating plodding beat of Good Morning Gorgeous. You can tell Blige borrowed more from the latter than just the languid percussion, too. Floridian producer duo Cool N Dre handles the LP's one and only foray into drill with On Top. The bass rattles against Blige's machine-gun cadence violently, and, just like that, one of the most seminal voices of the last three decades is reduced to uncharacteristic silence. The exception to this rule is Amazing, where DJ Khaled, or whoever it is he's chanting on behalf of these days, raises a regal brass ensemble to match the explosiveness of Blige's ardent celebration. On an album all about self-discovery, Blige's willingness to let her peers steal the spotlight is so rarely beneficial. Fivio Foreign adds texture to On Top, doing more in just over 30 seconds than Blige manages the whole rest of the song. Elsewhere, Usher comes out ahead on Need Love, scaling the sloshing synths with the confidence of a motivational speaker. Blige used to have a knack for turning anything she touched into a song that'd thereon be acknowledged as her property, no questions asked. Here, she's become another icon whose dwindling talents require assistance from others to help ease the pressure of releasing an album that's so intimate. With that being said, the affectionate moments remain Blige's responsibility. Though they don't make for the most thrilling songs, it should come as no surprise that her most soul-stirring confessions emerge when she enjoys a moment alone. No Idea remains as straightforward as possible. Atop a cacophonic fanfare fit, rather aptly, for a queen, Blige laments, "Around the corner where X lived/In the school street project… N\*gas was dying for less than/Thank God we made it out the hood"*, with courage. Her thoughts flow from mind to mouth without censorship, revealing her unglazed appreciation for still being here to tell her story. And what a story that is. Few artists have the cred or career of Blige, but she's never been shy to weigh in on the pressures of superstardom. History will remember her fondly as the headlining star with a humble frankness, but Good Morning Gorgeous is for her. It isn't going to win anyone not already intrigued by Blige over, but its successes are measured by the relief Blige feels through words of positive affirmation. "It's, it's like how I finally got a chance to say I'm amazing/I never said that in my life about myself, ever", she says in conversation on GMG Interlude. You are amazing, Blige, but Good Morning Gorgeous doesn't always attest to that. Good Morning Gorgeous - Mary J. Blige - 5/10 [link] [comments] |
