/r/Hiphopheads COVID-19 Donations Thread

Posted: 23 Apr 2020 01:11 PM PDT

Hello,

After some success over at the vastly superior sub /r/hiphopcirclejerk I figured we could get something going here too. We want to encourage those who can to donate to COVID-19 related relief charities to help those who are struggling now.

We will be offering some minor incentives for donations that are the following:

$5: Custom text flair

$10: Custom text flair + colouring

$5: Get out of a temporary ban

$5: Post something from the overposted/favourite's list

$20: Post a meme to this sub.

$20: Change the sidebar pic.

$0.50 CDN: Remove /u/cohtoh as mod

$50: Video date with /u/Imatruebraj

We will accept any other ideas people have, but not entirely sure what else we could do. Image flairs are out.

Proof of donation will be accepted as a screenshot from an email with some sort of identifying marker.

Here are some recommended charities. This is incomplete and going local is also always nice.

  • Direct Relief: U.S.-based organization working to get protective gear and critical care medications to health care workers responding to the coronavirus.
  • Immigrant Worker Safety Net Fund: Launching to provide immediate resources and financial support to migrants, refugees and low-wage workers in the United States.
  • National Bail Out: Organization working to bail out and provide support to Black mothers and caregivers, aims to end money bail and pretrial detention in the U.S.
  • Adopt a Native Elder: Provides assistance, including food boxes, to Navajo elders. Navajo Nation, one of the nation's largest food deserts where most live in poverty, has lost at least 41 people to coronavirus.
  • Artists for Lumad Bakwit School: Group donating food and medical supplies for indigenous children in the Philippines displaced from their homelands prior to the virus. (This organization is mod-approved, they are good people)
  • Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: Nonprofit humanitarian and medical relief organization providing supplies to hospitals and at-risk Palestinian children.
  • Native American Community Response Fund: Supports Indigenous and POC-led social change initiatives, currently directing funds to Native American nonprofits on the ground.
  • MΓ©decins Sans FrontiΓ¨res (MSF): Provides medical assistance to people around the world affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare.

Also willing to accept blood donations or volunteer work.

Whichever sub between /r/hiphopcirclejerk and /r/hiphopheads that fundraises less by the end of the month gets deleted.

Hype Thursday: Post songs by artists that haven't gotten more than 50 upvotes on HHH

Posted: 23 Apr 2020 09:00 AM PDT

Rules

Artists qualify if they're never gotten 50 or more upvotes on /r/HipHopHeads (counting features)

Formatting:

Artist - Title

Description: no character minimum but some things that might be good to include: where the rapper is from, what subgenres they might fall into, have cosigns they might have, what their influences are/who they sound like.

Example:

Aaron May - Let Go

17 year old Houston Rapper, biggest influences are J Cole and Nas.

Ajani Jones - Kiwi

'Kiwi' is my track I just dropped that is currently featured on Spotify's editorial playlist "Mellow Bars".

Been working on my craft for 8+ years now on a serious level. I'm heavily influenced by Earthgang, Kendrick, Kaytranada & J.I.D amongst others. Been getting good traction the last year or two with a few million streams & reviews from Noisey, Pitchfork, Complex, etc but still trying to go up a level u feel.

Some of my more popular videos are Pyramids w/Kweku Collins, Black Power Ranger, & Lucid

Ghostie - Think Bout It All the Time

Baltimore rapper with influences that range from Kid Cudi to JPEGMAFIA. Lots of variety across the album he dropped last month. Pitchfork just gave it a good review as well that describes his music better than I could

Yanko x Y.CB - Lightwork Freestyle (Yanko raps first)

Yanko x Y.CB x CGE MA - No Hook (Yanko was in pen when video was filmed

Yanko - Next Up?

Yanko is a UK drill rapper who reps 7th, a gang based in the north side of Newham. He's currently in prison but I don't think his sentence is longer than 2 years so he should be free late 2020/2021. His gang beef 6th which is the southside of Newham and most of his songs have shots at 6th as well as mocking deaths/stabbings carried out by him or his gang on his opps. He often appears alongside Y.CB who is the younger of CB who was/is the boss of 7th but he's also in prison riding a 23 year sentence. His opps also make music but most of their rappers are also in prison such as Young Dizz (12.5 year sentence for kidnapping, ironic considering the linked song has him bragging about kidnapping) and Striker (8 year sentence). The beef between these gangs was very active but as a lot of the major figures have been sent to prison I don't know if it is still as active, at least there aren't as many prominent rappers in the gangs still free other than Y.CB and Woosh (7th).

Yanko has clever wordplay, rude bars and a good flow, his music is very raw and reflects the unforgiving and savage nature of the beef in East London. Unfortunately UK drill songs often have to censor any opp names/opp blocks mentioned as police will remove songs from Youtube if they outright mention them so any random censoring/rapper censoring themselves is due to this. A lot of UK slang is used so maybe some of the words won't make sense to people not from the UK but Yanko's enunciation is good enough that you should be able too understand it.

Nines - Intro

Nines technically has over 50 upvotes on this site, but it was only for the article that said he got stabbed. Great UK artist I got put onto a couple days ago. This is my favorite song of his because it combines a moody drill instrumental with his clever wordplay and laid-back style. His subject matter is a mixture of trap (road) stories (like Benny the Butcher or Freddie Gibbs), as well as personal relationships. He's hard to compare to an American rapper, but I'd say his closest comparison is either early Lucki or Lil Baby.

In this song specifically, my favorite line is "If my CD don't do well in the charts, when I re-up they ain't seen this much white since the EDL march". Really witty and great flow. His finishing few bars also have a great style to them.

There are a few censored words in this music video, so I'd recommend listening to it on a streaming site.

Lndn Drgs - In The Rain

Lndn Drgs is a hip hop duo based out of Compton made up of grimes' stepbrother Jay Worthy and producer sean house. Their beats all have a kind of retro feel to them, with lots of 80s and 90s house inspirations.

I would give their whole album Aktive a listen. It has features from A$ap Yams, Freddie Gibbs, Curren$y and many more artists. Truly one of my favorite projects from the last couple years

Heavily recommended: If you post a song, listen to another song and comment on it. Otherwise it doesn't rly work that well.

Feel free to add any feedback on what could make these threads better.

Fred Da Godson Memorial Thread

This is the official memorial thread for Fred Da Godson

  • There will be zero tolerance for disrespectful comments in this thread.
  • All songs by the artist and non-news posts about the artist (e.g. reactions, tributes, etc.) should be posted within this thread, any posted outside of this thread will be removed whether or not they violate subreddit rules

News was broken by his longtime collaborator Jaquae, who said:

"Sleep in peace my brother..... πŸ’™πŸ™πŸΎ You'll never be forgotten. LOVE U MAN. I have so much things to say but I'm lost right now.."

Here is the thread for that

R.I.P Fred Da Godson 1985-2020

NYC COVID Mutual Aid funds:

From /u/imaera:

Imagine being a dude growing up idolizing NY rap legends, honing your craft despite criticisms of your physical appearance, and then finally being able to call the rappers we call 'Top 5 DOA' as your peers? That was Fred. He was a mixtape rapper that many counted out during the death of the mixtape era, but he survived. He represented NY always and never strayed from that "NY" sound when he could've sold out and took his sound down south.

We've lost a lot of rappers, but losing one like Fred sucks. He was true to the game in every sense of the phase.

RIP Bronx Bully.

Let's immortalize the discography:

French Montana: Rip [Fred Da Godman] damn this is wack ! Stay home corona is real πŸ™

Retch: DAMN RIP FRED DA GODSON 🀦🏾‍♂️ THATS MAD WACK

Lloyd Banks: Rest In Peace Fred the Godson πŸ™πŸ½

Kemba: RIP Fred The Godson man. Fuck. When I was growing up in Hunts Point, he would pull up like a superstar. Everyone thought he was the best. I was trying to be as good as he was. Him and my older brother friends. I was the little homie. This shit hurts.

Wale: Wow . Fred the Godson ... OMG man

Skyzoo: Damn, RIP my man Fred The Godson. Since like 2001 it was always great vibes and bar fests when we were around one another. Lyrical swordsman of the highest order for the city. Smh. πŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ½ #FredTheGodson
