The Gangsta. The Killa, The Dope Dealer.

You know that opening scene in Office Space where the whiter than snow, white collared Michael Bolton is un-ironically throwing up pseudo gang signs and dropping less-than-phat rhymes in a flow that makes Soulja Boy sound like the second coming of "Liquid Swords" era GZA? That's me when I hear this record. In short, "Bow Down," the debut album from hip hop super group West Side Connection, is the personification of 90s era West Coast, chest thumping, dick measuring Gangsta Rap. With apologies to "The Chronic," which relied heavily on comedic skits, and "Doggystyle," which was more suitable for party starting than providing the blueprint to rolling in the darker corners of Compton and the LBC, "Bow Down" is tough guy posturing in its most legit form. It's also arguably the greatest hip hop record to emanate from the left coast during the decade, and the greatest work Ice Cube ever put his stamp on that didn't include the letters N, W, and A.

"Bow Down" is a non-stop assault of threats, disses, macho braggadocio posturing, and chilling narratives not seen since "Straight Outta Compton." Set to the siren-wail west coast beats popularized by Dre himself, Cube, WC (Dub C), and Mack 10 never take a breath from informing us of their alpha dog status, delivering polarizing, haunting flows with lambasting verses and catchy choruses. The presence of an undeniable hook in almost every track does not cement this as hip hop pop, the result is more definitively in your face. There are no 2Pac-esque sentimental ballads, no Snoop like odes to schoolyards and block parties, and no "$20 Sack Pyramid Sketches" from the Doctor himself. Instead of half posturing/half showcasing a false sense of sentimentality, the trio tirelessly puts on a clinic of what Gangsta rap was supposed to be, not taking a break to pour out liquor for fallen comrades or easing a radio friendly message into the mix in order to sell records. Ultimately, the theme of "Bow Down" resides in placing a greater importance on being gangsters than artists, un-relentlessly serving up highly effective doses of true Gangsta Rap.

When analyzing "Bow Down" as a collection of rap songs, the album delivers on nearly episode, perfectly melding catchy, legit beats with flawlessly executed rapping. Aside from not containing a quasi ballad, nearly every Gangsta staple is delivered in exceptional form. The quintessential turf warring elements are found in the irresistible title track "Bow Down" which sets the tone of the entire album, the baiting "All the Critics in New York," and the unequivocally brutal Cypress Hill diss, "King of the Hill." The stance that a rapper will simply not hesitate to bust a cap in someone's ass is executed in rare form on "Cross Em Out and Put a K," the alpha dog setting, female belittling "Do You Like Criminals," and the tailor made for cruising in a Bro-ham "3 Time Felons." Even the more subdued moments prove menacing, as seen on the subtle chill of "Gangsters Make the World Go Round," and the morose, ominous thunder of "The Gangsta, the Killa, and the Dope Dealer," which samples NIN's "Hurt" and arguably lands as one of the top five hip hop songs of the decade. Aside from the filler track "Hoo Bangin," "Bow Down," flows menacingly and exceptionally well through its entirety.

Looking back, "Bow Down" would prove to be one of the last of a dying breed. When Cube boasts "and when I hear Westside Connection, I get a f*cking erection," he might be braying in formulaic gangsta, but it doesn't discount the fact that he speaks the truth. As the industry would unfortunately soon switch to top 40, club happy hip hop, genre dinosaurs started falling off in rapid fashion. Ice Cube would eventually become a parody of himself, starring in children's movies and fleeing about as far and fast as he could from Crenshaw Blvd. The merits of "Are We There Yet" aside, "Bow Down" is like a perfect snap shot in time in terms of analyzing the genre, and with better promotion, it could have brought that genre to its knees. "Bow Down" serves several purposes, aside from providing a highly enjoyable listen; it is cemented as probably the last superb Gangsta Rap album of the era, and stands today as one of its greatest.

Does French Montana REALLY have more hits than Kendrick Lamar?

Self confidence can be a great trait to have, especially for a rapper. Too little self confidence and you won't be taken seriously – but too much self confidence can backfire. This is the case for Karim Kharbouch, known to his many fans as 'French Montana', who recently said that he could go 'neck to neck' with rap great Kung Fu Kendrick. Let's put this to the test.

[SHOTS FIRED] International Edition - Two of India's biggest rappers are officially beefing with DIVINE releasing a second diss track without response

Bored of the Young Thug and French Montana beef already? Well if you're into knowing what's going on with the rap scene internationally, here's some beef between Mumbai rappers DIVINE and Emiway Bantai to keep you entertained during the quarantine.

But first some context and history for all this is needed even for people in India because the rap scene there has exploded in the past couple years, with diss tracks playing a central role in driving up popularity of a lot of these artists. Rap's rise to mainstream popularity in India went into overdrive after the release of Gully Boy, basically Bollywood 8 Mile. The plot of the movie is inspired by the lives of DIVINE and Naezy, two underground street rappers (gully directly translates to street). Funnily enough the other central character to the story, Emiway, was also featured in this movie as himself battling other Mumbai rappers and even making it to the finals and performing on the big stage. However, even before the movie was released both these guys were popular in their own right.

DIVINE

He's one of the first real underground rapper from India, and has a more lyrical style. He cites American rappers like Nas, Eminem, Big L and Rakim as his main inspirations. He first got famous after releasing his breakout single called "Mere Gully Main" which went on to be one of the main songs in the Gully Boy soundtrack. Since then he's signed with Sony India, terminated that deal and signed with his hero Nas's label Mass Appeal India. He's also worked with American artist Raja Kumari and made a song for the Netflix series "Sacred Games". In October 2019 he released his debut studio album to a very positive reaction.

Emiway Bantai

Emiway is an independent artist without the support of any label, sponsor or major partnership who, I like to say, tries to follow the Russ model of making music. Make a lot of it and big yourself up incessantly, mainly for being an independent artist and doing what no one's doing. To be fair to Emiway, he is leading the charge of new age Indian rappers on YouTube but the Russ comparison doesn't come up in a vacuum, he has stated that he takes inspiration from artists like Russ and Eminem in one of his diss tracks.

He initially blew up on Youtube after releasing a diss track called 'Samajh Mein Aaya Kya' in response to certain statements (taken out of context) made by Raftaar, an established rapper with his own rags-to-riches story who regularly makes songs for Bollywood, about how Emiway is just scraping by and that there is no money in underground rap. This song has gone on to be one of the most viewed Indian rap songs ever, currently sitting at over 111m views. The lyrics talk about him being self-made, how he plans to make an empire and not needing anyone to get to where he is at this point. He also says he once looked up to Raftaar and details what changed his mind. In response, Raftaar released Sheikh Chilli (currently at 96m views) basically flexing with cars and helicopters and offers his version of the story, implying that Emiway is peddling in half-truths. This is the point where I believe DIVINE got dragged into this, Raftaar bigs up DIVINE as a "real" rapper who got where he is by hard work etc. Emiway's responded with Giraftaar, where he takes shots at Raftaar for selling out to the mainstream and downplays his impact on the Indian rap scene gaining over 88m views. This is where the beef starts to cool off because Raftaar's response, Awein Hai (initially named Anime Hentai) missed it's mark even though he was able to get a couple hits in, the fans were starting to lose interest and it showed as the song only has around 14m views. The final nail in this conflict's coffin was when Bollywood and "Gully Boy" star, Ranveer Singh, put out a video on Instagram calling for peace between the two artists. Raftaar used this as an opportunity to officially squash the beef releasing a 14min long explainer to his YouTube channel.

There's no doubt who came out at the other end as the victor in this match up, with modern sound and video production and an increased budget per song Emiway has successfully retained a lot of audience from the beef still hitting 25-50m views on many of his old and new songs that he releases on a semi regular basis on his youtube channel. He's also gone on to release his most popular song MACHAYENGE sitting at over 171m views in addition to making songs with Canadian artist Dax and Australian artist Celina Sharma but his fans are still waiting for an album, something that DIVINE targeted on IG live earlier in mid April by referring to Emiway as simply a YouTuber while he's got 80m streams on his album.

Present day

After what DIVINE said on IG live, on April 15th Emiway released Hard taking shots at DIVINE and KR$NA, another OG of Indian rap. In Hard, he directly responds to DIVINE by flexing his streams on YouTube, hitting back against claims that he's not a real artist by stating his success on YouTube and hinting that he would randomly just drop an album. It all came to a boil on April 17 when DIVINE put out his first full fledged diss track, Chaabi Wala Bandar, and he did not disappoint. DIVINE ends the song by saying Emiway needs to stay in his lane because DIVINE is the reason that Akon, Nas and Bollywood recognize what a gully is (basically "I made this shit"). People with a keen eye might notice that with the video DIVINE is reinforcing the imagery comparing Emiway to monkeys and a toy called "Musical Jolly Chimp", manufactured in the 1950s in Japan initially started by Raftaar in Awein Hai (initially named Anime Hentai). After 5 days without a reply, on April 22nd DIVINE put out SACH BOL PATTA further taunting Emiway for the lack of a reply and ending by saying that he's got the keys to wind up Emiway further piling on with insults and toy money imagery poking fun at the way Emiway dances.

TLDR: Emiway becomes very popular very fast on YouTube as a "beef rapper" with a consistent schedule and modern production. Things get heated when in early April DIVINE, an OG of Indian rap, basically calls Emiway just a YouTuber and Emiway releases a diss track in response called Hard. Prompting DIVINE to fire back with a brutal track called Chaabi Wala Bandar and today after 5 days without a reply another strong track called SACH BOL PATTA. Whichever way this goes, the people here who understand Hindi or just like following international rap are gonna be eatin good.

KR$NA was unimpressed with Emiway's claim that he's the only one "representing India" in an attempt at English rap in Freeverse Feast (Daawat) specifically citing how Emiway's rap makes little sense in his song FREEVERSE FEAST (LANGAR) and then flexing his own lyrical muscle with some English and Hindi bars with a similar flow that Emiway used in Daawat. Emiway doesn't take this without fight though and releases SEEDHA TAKEOVER in a week prompting KR$NA to put out SEEDHA MAKEOVER recommended above. They've been going back and forth since, with Hard by Emiway being the latest jab between the two.
