An Introduction to French HipHop, the 2nd biggest rap scene in the world after the US

France is the 2nd largest Hip Hop market in the world after the united states but little is know about the french rap scene due to the language barrier.

In this post i tried making a collection of some of the hits that best represent french rap in order to fight this barrier and show what we vibe to here in the land of the baguettes.

note that this list is a really small part of the huge mess that is french rap, as a simple amateur i can say that this list is far from complete. That is why is ask my french comrads to share the hits they think should have made it into the list in the comments.

  1. Mainstream rap

with his very energetic rap flow and voice, Niska is a banger machine and the number one choice in parties:

Nekfeu is kind of the Jcole of french rap, "woke" hits and complicated lyrical schemes:

just to show the gravity of this hit and how huge it was when i dropped, they rented the whole eiffel tower just to make the clip (the eiffel tower being the 4th most visited monument in the world).

2.Less mainstream rap

​

now retired, Hugo TSR is a good representation of the "woke" side of the french rap scenes. Just raw and honest lyrics.

like Hugo TSR, guizmo is known for his raw and mostly sad lyrics talking about how he lost his friends, addiction and the life in the french "banlieues" (french hoods) where crime and murder is common place. These hits must not be the same experience when you don't understand the lyrics, but i still wanted to share them.

Alpha wann is considered as one of the most technical rapper in france, if not the most technical.

So hopefully you are aware that Knxwledge resealed some of his 'remix' tapes on streaming services.

These include projects like

  • Musiq, Pt.1
  • Meek, Vol. 1-5
  • WT.13.8 (personal favorite)
  • Etc.

In these tapes he remixes brilliant freestyles and some songs, and on this Youtube channel, he matches the freestyles with the song. Idk, check it out and it'll make more sense.
