Five Off Top: BOOMIVERSE by Big Boi

Posted: 19 Jun 2017 01:49 PM PDT

BOOMIVERSE is Big Boi's third album as a solo act, released Friday, June 16th, 2017 on all streaming platforms and iTunes. After a good run with Indie Pop duo Phantogram as the group known as Big Grams, Daddy Fat Sax is back at it on his own, with a mission to funk up the universe!

For musical accompaniment, here is the Spotify Playlist I've created based on my Top 5 songs from the album in tracklist order, if any of you would like to listen along.

Kill Jill (feat. Killer Mike & Jeezy)

As the first full song on the album kicks off, the listener may be drawn in by the siren song of an asian-influenced vocal sample and then begin to wonder, "Did I turn on the right album?" The answer to this question is: yes, yes you did... and the track bangs. Skillful chops to this sample come with disciplined Trap drums and the signature bounce for which we know and love Organized Noize.

Killer Mike has opening verse duties, and he kills it! It's everything you'd expect from Big Boi's longtime collaborator, with him flossing all over the track and skillfully jumping from "repping that Zone Four though with a .44 on your bro though" to "Ric Flair with that flashin'/ Bitch don't I look dashin'?" as we transition into a great hook by Jeezy addressing his and Big Boi's haters and naysayers. Never missing a beat, Big Boi drops in for the next verse in his comical style and punchlines, giving food for thought on the Black Community with lines like "They say Cosby gave 'em roofies, now who know what the truth is (what?)" while maintaining a cool head. After the final hook, Rock D The Legend talks his talk to end a finely crafted one-two punch of a song!

In The South (feat. Gucci Mane & Pimp C)

Cory Mo, TM88 and Organized Noize team up to give us a call-back to raw, authentic Down-South Hip-Hop with a smooth wah-wah guitar over a real bassline and more bouncy drums! Gucci Mane does his thing with a smooth flow, and Pimp C holds it down with a previously unreleased hook about the South with his signature drawl. Big Boi comes in hard on his verse, going off with bars like "Timothy McVeigh, knock it down like OKC, boy/ And ain't no nigga on ya playlist fucking with a A-list nigga like B-I-G B-O-I, why?"

There's not too much more to say about this joint, but to PLAY IT!

All Night

The legend makes a return to form on this jukebox joint. The instrumental feels very happy and flows nicely with a Ragtime Piano and a slapping snare; in many ways, it's reminiscent of DRAM's hit Cash Machine. "It's alright, it's okay/ Everybody gonna say what they wanna say/ Players gonna play when they wanna play" sets the tone for the rest of the song, a sing-song anthem to make you move, feeling good! Big Boi finishes off this solo track with a smooth verse that feels like something off of his solo debut.

Made Man (Feat. Killer Mike & Kurupt)

Can we please get a Big Boi x Killer Mike EP?!? The two artists really complement each other's styles and Mike really sounds hungry as ever.

On to the track, Big Boi gives a fast-paced flow to start the song off, with a pretty good hook to set the stage for Killer Mike to spit hardcore punchlines about his clout. The song is hard, dope and gets even better when Kurupt joins the fray! The West Coast rapper flows a little more slowly than usual, but every syllable carries weight when he makes his gangsta threats on wax; my only complaint is the brevity of Kurupt Young Gotti's verse. Oh well! Another fire track, this time located near the back end of the album.

Follow Deez (Feat. Curren$y & Killer Mike)

I know what you're thinking... this guy really likes Killer Mike! While I do admire the lyrical chemistry between the two rappers, that Curren$y verse really sealed the deal for me! "Got this Monte Carlo that my older homie sold me/ Had it for some years, now the mirror's like a trophy"/ My windows up, I got my main thing rollin'/ I trust her so I know she gon' do it just how I showed her" may be some typical Spitta lines, but the fact that he got a placement on Big Boi's latest album really brought out the energy in the New Orleans rapper! He also kills it on hook duties. Big Boi and Killer Mike go off as usual to open and close the song, and the beat is pretty crazy. To me, this should've been the final track on the album!

Conclusion

Although I highlighted five songs from BOOMIVERSE, it was considerably tough for me to whittle it down; every track has its own flavor, though a few might get overlooked due to the experimental nature of the production and melodies. I highly encourage you to give this album a listen, if only to support a legendary rapper who has paid his dues!

Thanks for reading; I hope you enjoyed it, or at least took something away from the post. If you're interested in reading more, I will be posting other segments to my Wordpress blog, Cota's Corner. Keep an eye out for a few more posts this upcoming week!
