I just saw Questlove give a lecture where he talked about The Roots' upcoming album, his place in hip hop, and his opinion on some new school rappers.

Posted: 02 Mar 2017 07:48 PM PST

My school hosted a conversation with Questlove, Baratunde Thurston, me Ben Greenman. I was debating on whether to make a post about this, but I figured you guys would like to hear about how the new Roots album is going.

First, the conversation talked about Questlove's childhood and early obsession in music. I found it fascinating that he mentioned that his first love was recording - he recorded "radio shows" with his parents, interviewing them as if they were famous musicians. He said that if he wasn't going to be a musician, he would own a record store.

He also spoke about the next Roots album. When asked about the recent Trump election influenced his work, he replied that he felt that critics were bashing the band for their recent dark direction on the last few hours. He said something to the tune of "well, Obama got elected, so what do you guys have to complain about?" His decision to begin recording albums with a political mindset arrived from taking a look back and his contribution to rap, and noting that he didn't want to go down as part of a group that rapped about lyricism or materialism. So he set out making albums like How I Got Over and Undun, because he felt it needed to happen. He spoke about End Game, saying he wanted to return to the style of Illadelph Halflife, but the political leanings slowly creeped into his work. Questlove then mentioned he was about halfway done recording the project, but was stuck on deciding whether to scrap everything and star anew with a more political approach, and after a pause, he said he was probably gonna do that.

Also, he commented about some new school rappers. He first talked about Future, who he respected for dropping two back to back albums in a "singles age", and casually noted that he was informed Future would be dropping "two more in the next two weeks." Take that as you will. He also had a sort of weird admiration for 21 Savage - he talked about Savage's interview with Vlad and how he was so shocked at 21's nihilism. He found it insane because he felt he recently found his own reason to live.

Also, this is really exciting and a fun way to conclude this - Questlove said he one day wanted to bring back Soul Train. He knows it's a project that would take him forever, and he's too busy to do it, but he would like to drop everything and somehow bring it back.
