Album of the Year 2016: The Wrap Up

Posted: 15 Mar 2017 03:05 PM PDT

Sorry for the wait, but here it is finally: all the albums and posts in the AOTY 2016 series (in the order they were posted, not the order they were originally supposed to be in—a lot of people posted late or out of order).

  • What were your favorite write-ups?

  • What albums that didn't get a write-up did you think deserved one?

  • Did you discover out any dope album(s) that you hadn't heard before because it was in the series?

The use of "on" in Hip-Hop.

Posted: 17 Mar 2017 08:57 PM PDT

On

preposition

  1. physically in contact with and supported by (a surface).

Throughout hip-hop we hear the word "on" not only as a replacement for is/are e.g. "Pockets on swole"; but, also to facilitate comparison e.g. "Wrist on Rocky". I decided to follow the evolution and unique use.

Picture Me Rollin'- 2Pac- 1996

"Pockets on swollen"

This is the earliest use of the word "on" used as a replacement for the word "are" that I was able to find.

Just a Lil' Bit- 50 Cent- 2005

"Pockets on swoll cause I move the O's"

Nothing to see here. 50 being influenced and adding a classic line to his flow.

Bill Gates- Lil Wayne- 2010

"Bitch I get big bucks, pockets on Bruce Bruce"

Wayne being ever the innovator with the earliest switch up that I traced down. Before these lyrics "on" could be replaced by "are/is" for the sentence to make sense; these lyrics make it so that "like" is a better replacement than "are/is". Instead of saying his pockets are on swole he just says that they are on something that is swole; most of the earliest lyrics, that I found, that were similarly changed up can be credited to Wayne. On Bill Gates in September 2010 and 6 foot 7 foot in December 2010.

E.T. (Remix)- Kanye West- 2011

"Pockets on Shrek, rockets on deck"

I added this song to the list because it is one of the first lyrics (that don't belong to Lil Wayne) that use "on" to compare

Chris Tucker- 2 Chainz- 2013

"Got my pockets on full, stomach on full, gun on full, I got full coverage"

We are no longer restricted to just talking about how full our pockets are; 2 chainz innovates the use of the word further paving the way for newer more creative uses.

For Free- Drake- June 2016

"You got attitude on na na

And your pussy on agua

And your stomach on flat flat

And your ass on what's that?"

Drake hits us with a set of rhymes utilizing the word "on" on his summer hit.

X- 21 Savage- 2016

"Wrist on Milly Rock them diamonds on me dancin'"

Disclaimer: I know this list is incomplete and I am continuing my search. If anyone notices important lyrics that were left out or innovations that were credited to the wrong lyricist let me know and I will update the post. For the purpose of this post I posted the lyrics and the name of the quoted lyricist next to the name of the song; I know For Free is Khaled's song not Drake's.
