An Introduction to The Emerging Milwaukee Underground Scene

Posted: 28 Mar 2021 10:44 AM PDT

(I wanted to write a piece about the emerging scene in Milwaukee that not many people on here seem to be up on, in an attempt to open you guys up to an interesting regional scene.)

Milwaukee is in an interesting spot among the Midwest music, often overlooked by the Chicago recent successful drill scene, and rich history of Detroit music, Milwaukee isn't home to many soul artists or rappers, outside of Coo Coo Cal's one hit wonder In My Projects. When Milwaukee comes up in conversation with people from NY/LA, people consider it a farm town, which couldn't be farther from the truth, historic segregation, lack of funding, and crime have led some parts of the city to fall victim to struggling conditions, and with that struggle has came an outlet of music that's uniquely fits it's underdog mentality.

If you ask anyone from Milwaukee why it hasn't been able to establish itself in a national scene, often times people from there will tell you it comes from bitter backstabbing and lack of organization, whenever an artist begins to make noise in the city they often are either locked up or get done in with some drama from a rival artist.

However, recent progression in the scene is starting to take form, and with eclectic characters and unique sounds forming, as well as a similar scene in Flint/Detroit gaining national mainstream attention. Milwaukee could be next up in the commercial success as major labels are always scouring for a new scene to profit off of. The lack of consistent studios and mentoring from the industry has brought a unique gritty sound with low level production that's catchy and a reflection of the city itself. I plan to highlight some of the particular main names within the scene currently.

Chicken P

Chicken has been a mainstay in the scene for years now, and even though he's relatively unknown to many, his quirky lines, unparalleled voice, and weird dance moves have made him known among those within the Midwest. He's the definition of a show man and a personality. Songs like Drop the Visor, Dark Rex, Story of My Life, and Going Crazy With Them Racks, have all garnered millions of views on YouTube, and his recent success has allotted him some recognition from mainstream artists, such as Yung Bleu which he has a song coming out with soon after posting this leak on his Instagram.

Much of Chicken's success, and the entire Milwaukee scene for that matter, is credited to TeeGlazedIt, a white videographer from the city has made basically every music video that's came out of Milwaukee, his knack for editing and shooting has help bring some stability to the scene itself, while also helping launch him his own success, shooting videos for King Von and Calboy's "Brand New".

Lakeyah

What began from rapping in her car on her iPhone, led to a deal with Atlanta's Quality Control, since then she's moved out of Atlanta and been able to use resources to build a mainstream following, but still has the same tenacious flow that's she was known for from her days rapping in the car. Her showing out hit was Big FlexHer, featuring Detroit's 42 Dugg, however her versatility is on display with songs such as Windows and Hit Different, where she flows on a more RnB slow type beat. However, her main big hit currently is Female Goat, which she raps alongside City Girls and pays homage with another Milwaukee rapper Spidey Mayweather rapping over his instrumental "GOAT". Lakeyah is the embodiment of the talent from the city that's able to fluorish when given a supportive and well resourced record label around her, she's well on her way to stardom with her versatile style.

Mariboy Mulamar

Mariboy's lanky looks and autotune melodies are by far the most unique product of the upcoming scene, however his work ethic is probably unmatched, every other weekend he drops a video or is on the road to a different city to work with another underground artist wherever his work takes him. His juxtaposition style of his high pitched voice, alongside dark bars, and catchy one liners makes him an interesting case to gain mainstream attention. His early success from songs such as No Hook were followed up by other catchy singles such as Nomo Rounds, Tailor, and Aflac.

Jigg

If Chicken's considered the main face of the Milwaukee scene, then Jigg would be considered secondary to that, the two collaborated on the song Fast Cash Babies which went on to be one of the biggest songs to come out of the city in recent history. His solo song No Hook is basically him going in 3 minutes straight with gritty lyrics. He put out a song this summer with Mariboy called Rich As Shit with an interesting instrumental and gained attention locally. If the scene takes off in its entirety Jigg will be well on his way with it.

Mike Mike

A relative newcomer to the scene compared to the previous artists mentioned, Mike Mike has made himself no stranger to the scene, his song Bouncin Through The Southside was played often through the city this past summer as he rode over 2Pac's Ambitionz Az a Ridah instrumental with comical one bars such as "at night time white guys gon come and give me cash for it, I'm bout that action only thing I'm duckin is the task force", over the past year he's also put out songs like Shotz Fired and Save Dat Shit. Similar to other artists, Mike Mike is constantly on the move working with other artists, including Houston rapper Peso Peso.

Big Wan

Only a teenager at 19, Big Wan has came onto the scene locally due to his delivery and trademark sound. Wan is a big bodied rapper who talks tough bars and raps alongside Lil Trav, who I believe is only 14 years old, but is still holding more money than most of the friends I have who are ten years older than him, they collaborate together on their song 8ight Blocks, Wan also has gained a following from his songs Fast Lane Freestyle and Backend, who he raps alongside LBM Lil Joe, another local rapper.

Two additional rappers worth noting from the Mil are SME Tax Free, 54 Baby Trey, and Raised Round Bosses. You can read more about these guys as well as the others I've written about in Pitchfork's piece written by Alphonse Pierre.

Amazing album filled with so many great moments and it flows so well. Can't believe it's been 10 years. Times flies man. Dreamin' and American Rapstar are 2 of my favorite songs ever.

What are your favorite songs?

Do you think it's K.R.I.T.'s best mixtape?

Where would you put it on K.R.I.T.'s discography?

How do you think it sounds 10 years later?

Posted: 28 Mar 2021 12:19 PM PDT

Fishscale was released 15 years ago on March 28th, 2006.

Ghost delivered an immaculate performance throughout the album. It's one of my favorite albums ever. Top tier production from MF DOOM (RIP), Pete Rock, J-Dilla, Just Blaze, and more. My favorite songs are Shakey Dog, The Champ, 9 Mili Bros, Momma, and Three Bricks.

Do you think it aged well?

What are your favorite songs and beats?

Favorite verse?

Where would you put it on Ghostface's discography?

"Haram" by Armand Hammer: A Masterpiece

Posted: 28 Mar 2021 12:33 PM PDT

Haram. Forbidden. Haram presents itself as "a collection of the profane and the pure," showing off the highs and lows of growing up in poverty, American life, and manhood. The album accomplishes this lofty task by stacking dense verses performed by Armand Hammer (rapper duo billy woods and Elucid) over luscious beats by legendary West Coast producer The Alchemist, with features from Earl Sweatshirt, Quelle Chris, and others. This concoction of elements leads to an album with a unique dissonance between how beautiful the songs sound, and how intensely morose the lyrics are.

The first thing anyone listening to this album will notice, is the album art. The artwork may be divisive, but I think it is greatly successful. Some may interpret the pigs to be cops, which would be in line with the lyrics Chicharrones, as well as continuing the theme from Shrines of having cops on the cover. Others may see it as a simple visual metaphor for the concept of Haram, as it is something which is literally Haram in Islam, but also grotesque to look at, giving it a literal forbidden feeling as you don't want to look it. These are both valid interpretations, but I see the two pigs as being billy woods and Elucid, being so consumed by a life of doing forbidden acts, they are left feeling dead inside, a theme explored throughout the album.

Haram's first line is something of a mission statement. "Dreams is dangerous, linger like angel dust, ain't no angels harboring, ain't no saving us, ain't no slaving us". Everything in this album was always destined to happen. "Sir Benni Miles" later delves into a major theme of the album: regret. Billy woods paints the picture of being kept up at night, stirred by some failure in the past, with only the solace of pills to temporarily forget. "Don't make a keepsake out of grief".

This leads into "Roaches Don't Fly", a heavy verse from Elucid tells of the dynamics of a low income neighborhood. Gun violence, racism, poverty, all things many have to face the reality of daily. All of this over a sparse beat capped with a perfectly placed guitar solo at the songs climax, one of the strongest beats on the record.

While billy woods' verse on "Indian Summer" may be one of the more straightforward on the record, it's nonetheless in line with the albums themes and paints a vivid picture. Woods tells of his teenage years, when he had to hustle in secret. Using a clever double entendre in "came home stinkin' of gas", woods describes how he used lawn mowing as a front to sell drugs on the side. He tells of the thrill of keeping all this money a secret, perhaps the only time to that point in his life he even had excess money. But he couldn't dare share what he was doing with his family; what he's doing is Haram.

Falling Out The Sky is a truly amazing track. Earl starts off the song, introducing the themes of reminiscing and regret: "My father body swollen behind my eyes, I ain't cry for him in time to return solar, We on the ride forward, the reverse not workin'" Woods then comes in with a stellar verse, in which he ponders various memories about the West Coast, effortlessly connecting different memories and pieces of time together, capping it off with the very telling, "It felt sleepy at night, but I like that, Felt like you could relax, Like you could disappear, Like I wasn't surrounded by the past". Woods' verse is followed by a sample of David Lynch discussing day dreams, and this may be my favorite moment of the album. Not only did billy woods create a perfect visualization of him daydreaming in his verse, he does it in the style of a David Lynch film, bending and combining various planes of time and reality together to create a surreal yet cohesive experience. As a side note, I love David Lynch, he's my favorite director, I strongly recommend checking out Inland Empire and Eraserhead.

Billy woods' verse on Squeegee is one of the more depressing on the record. It tells the story of a young man who lives a healthy life. Working out, having a healthy sleep schedule, cutting out meat and not smoking. That is, not smoking except one night he sees some old friends and takes a few hits. He walks home, paranoid of being followed and killed. Although the track never directly says it, billy woods implies this person is murdered with phrases like "head fish rot" and "smell like the morgue". "The taste in his mouth just like before", may be a continuation of a theme explored on Stonefruit, where woods compares the moment of death to the moment of birth.

"Robert Moses" starts off by asking a very revealing question. "Can God forgive us, for what we have done to this world?" This question could be seen as the central thesis of this entire album. Can God forgive the duo for breaking Haram throughout their life? Can God forgive the people in power who have been systematically oppressing Black people for centuries? Can God forgive the perpetrators of gang violence? These are the heavy questions woods and Elucid are dealing with throughout the album, alongside candid representations of how asking these questions leave them feeling.

The album closes out on Stonefruit, a perfect outro track which encapsulates all of the themes of the album. Elucid sings "I don't wanna lose control, But I can't crowd my space to grow, Comfort's dull but gets us through, I got so much left to undo," poetically describing a lot of complex feelings at once. Sometimes we're held back by things we have no control over. Sometimes life is dull and hard to slog through. Sometimes we fuck up and have to live with that, forever. Billy woods goes deeper into this. The harsh realities of life, the constant memories bombarding him from the past, have finished him. Billy woods exposes himself so deeply that there's none of him left, he's nothing but a pile of bones. "The pavement gave way to a thicket of thorns, Where the body lay naked as the day I was born." Woods is empty by the time we reach the end of the album, stripped bare by all that has happened in his life. You can try to love him, but he's all but a memory at that point, "She dragged the bones home and built a bed, She drank Rosé out the skull, but held it gentle as my living head."

Listening to this album is a lot like a journey. It prods the listener to come back to it, to try and decipher more of the messages, more of the themes. And as you do, not only do you understand and appreciate the lyrics more, you notice the tiny details The Alchemist masterfully uses, almost inaudible guitar riffs, changing drum patterns, additions and removals of instruments, that prove that this record is as dense sonically as it is lyrically. The end result is a masterpiece; an album that's tormented by the past and desperate to warn the listener of the pitfalls of life.

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.
