What's your favorite example of a "lyrical miracle spiritual" rap verse?

Posted: 11 Apr 2022 07:07 AM PDT

The Good: Inspectah Deck on Triumph

I bomb atomically, Socrates' philosophies and hypotheses

Can't define how I be dropping these mockeries

Lyrically perform armed robbery

Flee with the lottery, possibly they spotted me

The Bad: Eminem on Infinite

Imitator, intimidator, stimulator, simulator of data, eliminator

[...]

My a cappella releases classic masterpieces, through telekinesis

It eases you mentally, gently, sentimentally, instrumentally

With entity, dementedly meant to be infinite

The Ugly: K-Rino on Multi-Reflex

I'm the indeterminate learner nocturnal block burnin' inferno

Permanent earner mercury alien language discerner

Digital surfer, the lyrical murder miracle server

The mystery un-earther, physical inertia reverser

[...]

Wreckin' effortless mesocephalic cyberneticist

Slippin' peppermints of slick messages in your beverages

The incredulous pessimist, the weaponless exorcist

Swellin' his neck with an infectious leprous ephelis

MF DOOM on Beef Raps puts every LMS verse to shame

A rhyming cannibal who's dressed to kill and cynical

Whether it's animal, vegetable or mineral

It's a miracle how he get so lyrical

And proceed to move the crowd like an old negro spiritual

[DISCUSSION] Lil B - Gods Father (10 Years Later)

Posted: 11 Apr 2022 08:31 AM PDT

God's Father is a mixtape by American rapper Lil B. It was released on February 27, 2012 through Lil B's BasedWorld Records label. Featuring 34 tracks, the mixtape has received positive reviews from music critics.

Upon its release, God's Father mixtape received positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from critics, the album received an average score of 75, which indicates "generally favorable reviews", based on 4 reviews. Chris Letso of Beats per Minute wrote: "God's Father is nearly two hours long, and it's actually good." Letso also thought that "the cohesiveness of God's Father in the face of all these approaches is what makes it a great mixtape." Pitchfork critic Jayson Greene stated: "It's probably his most immersive single release--or album, or mixtape, or emanation, or whatever--in a year and a half, better than both Based God Velli and I'm Gay." Mike Powell of Spin described the album as "the most fulfilling Lil B release yet." XXL magazine's Adam Fleischer was more mixed in his review and thought: "His quick delivery is impressive and B shows that he actually owns the technical skills to properly ride a beat—even though he doesn't often choose to employ them." Nevertheless, Fleischer also further wrote: "How long his self-professed revolution lasts and in which direction the quality heads remains to be seen, but there's no doubt that Lil B won't be slowing down any time soon."

[Discussion] Billy Woods - History Will Absolve Me (10 Year Anniversary)

Posted: 11 Apr 2022 02:04 PM PDT

This album's 10th birthday was yesterday, surprised I didn't see a post about it considering how important it seems to be. I've heard it singlehandedly kept Backwoodz afloat when it dropped.

I really like Hiding Places, Haram, and Aethiopes, so I finally decided to give this a listen today. I think I see why it gets such universal praise, but like with all Billy Woods stuff it's gonna take me a while to really figure out what he's saying.

Whether you've been listening to it for 10 years or you're listening for the first time today like me, what do you think?

[DISCUSSION] Why Did It Take a Decade for Rap to Evolve (80s-90s)?

Posted: 09 Apr 2022 09:18 PM PDT

When you listen to 80s rap, there was the common style of rapping you hear that was just very basic and followed the same 1-2 formula for bars (i.e. Sugar Hill Gang, Fat Boys, LL Cool J, Beastie Boys etc.)

Then you started slowly seeing some progression in this style with guys like Kool G Rap changing the 1-2 flow to a more rapid-fire type, guys like Rakim adding intra-line rhymes (aka internal rhymes), and guys like Slick Rick telling entire stories with their rhymes.

5 years later you got guys like 2pac taking the Slick Rick thing up a notch by playing double roles (i.e. Souljas Story), revisited almost a decade later by guys like Eminem (Stan), and guys like Nas taking the Rakim style up a notch by blending that with the Slick Rick style of storytelling. The flow that Kool G Rap improvised on then was imitated by guys like Chino XL, while guys like Snoop popularized a new way of flowing and in NY and the West Coast all new flows were being created and were soon all over the place. Guys like Jay Z were then mixing the Rakim style of wordplay while trying to create their own unique flows.

Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, these guys didn't exactly innovate the way these others did, but they kept that older "classic Hip Hop" style alive for those who loved it and they were cherished for it, and while this may have slowed progress in Hip Hop a bit, they made it more modern and focused more on the Rakim-style of classic rap rather than the more raw and basic form before that. It was like a very strong revisiting of the old stuff but with modern appeal. Kind of pulling the motion of rap back to its roots a bit (so much so that people began to identify it as "Hip Hop" instead of rap. Hip Hop up until the mid 90s or so was the entire culture, and the music and spoken word itself was "rap", just one very small part of Hip Hop. Hip Hop was the graffiti and the clothes etc. But people started calling this form of rap "Hip Hop", as if it encapsulated the entire culture unlike other forms of rap).

So why did it take over a decade for rap to evolve like this? Why didn't the millions of people rapping like Beastie Boys and the Fat Boys think "Hey, this is very basic, what if I put this word in the middle here, or what if I rap it a little faster?." I mean simply rhyming one word with another word at the end of each bar or rhyming in the same flow lasted almost a decade. Rakim shouldn't have been the outlier. There should have been 100 guys like him who thought "hey, we dont have to just rhyme a word at the end, we can put two words that rhyme in the middle of this sentence too.". That should have happened within the first few months of rap being born, or at the least, by the mid 80s it should have been the popular style. You had a million fans by then, thousands of rappers all working on this. How did it not reach that point sooner?

Was it because the people in control of things at the time (i.e. Rick Rubin and Russel Simmons) weren't willing to take a risk with new styles and kept pushing the old format on mainstream radio? One might argue that rap and hip hop was always a grassroots thing and new styles found their way to the masses regardless of mainstream play, through mixtapes, mc events etc.

Or is it because those interested in rap were, on average (we're not talking about every single person here), not as intelligent as the average person due to disenfranchisement and other social ills, so when guys like Rakim came along and did what should have been obvious to anyone at the time, they were worshipped as rap gods? If rap had been more popular and appealed more to the general masses like other forms of music (i.e. you would probably not find a Wall Street guy listening to 80s rap unless he was really trying to be edgy), would it have evolved more quickly because you'd have more brainpower involved and more of a chance of intelligent people listening to it and partaking in it?

It makes me wonder why it was so slow to advance, and it makes me feel like its all 30 years behind where it should be by now. Look at how quickly all other forms of music evolved. It seems like the only one that's done so at a turtle's pace. What do you think?

[DISCUSSION] What're some under the radar examples of an artist paying homage to another?

Posted: 09 Apr 2022 06:00 PM PDT

I was recently recommended My Favorite Things by John Coltrane on YouTube and I was struck by how reminiscent the cover is of Days Before Rodeo. No idea if this was done on purpose or not but it inspired me to make this post.

Replies can be about lyrics too. People on this subreddit probably know this since they're more invested in hip hop than the average person but anytime a rapper mentions something along the lines of 25 lighters on a dresser (Backseat Freestyle, Apple Pie, etc.) they're referencing the hook of the classic DJ DMD, Lil Keke, and Project Pat track 25 Lighters

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Coi Leray- Trendsetter

Posted: 09 Apr 2022 04:38 PM PDT

Coi Leray dropped her debut album Trendsetter yesterday.

I think that somwhere in this bloated 20 track project there is a solid 3/5 (6.5/10) project. Songs like Blick Blick, Aye Yai Yai,Clingy, Twinnenem, No More Parties, Overthinking, and Anxiety show that there is some quality here. But that is hurt by too many other songs. This should have been the dexlue, but I understand an artist like Coi Leray needs to do a "shotgun method" of hoping at least one of these songs becomes a hit.

What do y'all think she will do first week? Her streams went from around 3.8 -4.2 million on spotify to 5.3 million per month. Personally I don't see this doing more than 15k first week.

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

[DISCUSSION] Sonder - TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG (1 Year Later)

Posted: 09 Apr 2022 06:02 AM PDT

Just in time for warm weather, Brent Faiyaz has stepped back into old digs and the Sonder outfit has returned to gift fans with a new pack of six new tracks laced in familiar toxicity and monetary ambition by way of TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG.

It marks a return to form nearly four years after 2017's Into offering and quenches the thirst that's been brewing for months now as the rumored reunion approached the horizon.

TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG arrives as a Sonder Radio short film, showcasing six different tracks and a cameo from Jorja Smith.

Brent, Atu, and Dpat craft the perfect element to traipse the complex balance of love, hate, and the comeup as the crooner gently spews signature disrespect:

"Stop callin' your friends and sayin' you got one (God, you tweakin')/While you at it, call a doctor/You outta pocket, you need to stop it/You saw me at the club and it was sorta poppin'."

WATCH/LISTEN

Tracklist:

  1. INTRO
  2. TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG
  3. NO MISTAKE
  4. WE ONLY GET OLDER
  5. FUCK WITH ME
  6. BREAK U OFF
  7. DON'T TRY TO FORGET ME
  8. OUTRO
