[DISCUSSION] What're some under the radar examples of an artist paying homage to another?

Posted: 09 Apr 2022 06:00 PM PDT

I was recently recommended My Favorite Things by John Coltrane on YouTube and I was struck by how reminiscent the cover is of Days Before Rodeo. No idea if this was done on purpose or not but it inspired me to make this post.

Replies can be about lyrics too. People on this subreddit probably know this since they're more invested in hip hop than the average person but anytime a rapper mentions something along the lines of 25 lighters on a dresser (Backseat Freestyle, Apple Pie, etc.) they're referencing the hook of the classic DJ DMD, Lil Keke, and Project Pat track 25 Lighters

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Coi Leray- Trendsetter

Posted: 09 Apr 2022 04:38 PM PDT

Coi Leray dropped her debut album Trendsetter yesterday.

I think that somwhere in this bloated 20 track project there is a solid 3/5 (6.5/10) project. Songs like Blick Blick, Aye Yai Yai,Clingy, Twinnenem, No More Parties, Overthinking, and Anxiety show that there is some quality here. But that is hurt by too many other songs. This should have been the dexlue, but I understand an artist like Coi Leray needs to do a "shotgun method" of hoping at least one of these songs becomes a hit.

What do y'all think she will do first week? Her streams went from around 3.8 -4.2 million on spotify to 5.3 million per month. Personally I don't see this doing more than 15k first week.

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

[DISCUSSION] Sonder - TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG (1 Year Later)

Posted: 09 Apr 2022 06:02 AM PDT

Just in time for warm weather, Brent Faiyaz has stepped back into old digs and the Sonder outfit has returned to gift fans with a new pack of six new tracks laced in familiar toxicity and monetary ambition by way of TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG.

It marks a return to form nearly four years after 2017's Into offering and quenches the thirst that's been brewing for months now as the rumored reunion approached the horizon.

TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG arrives as a Sonder Radio short film, showcasing six different tracks and a cameo from Jorja Smith.

Brent, Atu, and Dpat craft the perfect element to traipse the complex balance of love, hate, and the comeup as the crooner gently spews signature disrespect:

"Stop callin' your friends and sayin' you got one (God, you tweakin')/While you at it, call a doctor/You outta pocket, you need to stop it/You saw me at the club and it was sorta poppin'."

WATCH/LISTEN

Tracklist:

  1. INTRO
  2. TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG
  3. NO MISTAKE
  4. WE ONLY GET OLDER
  5. FUCK WITH ME
  6. BREAK U OFF
  7. DON'T TRY TO FORGET ME
  8. OUTRO

SOME DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
Favorite songs?
Least favorite songs?
Was this worth the wait?
Where would you rate this in the top projects of 2021?
What do you think about its weird release (only on Youtube as a video) instead of a traditional way?
Where do you rank this in Brent and Sonder's discographies?

Would not be surprised if this comeback flops like Tattle Tales. He needs to stop trying to be controversial. It's corny. He makes decent music, he just needs to focus on the music and stop chasing clout. Clout chasing doesn't age well

[Discussion] Joey Badass - All-Amerikkkan Badass (5 years later)

Posted: 07 Apr 2022 06:28 AM PDT

Five years ago today, at a point in his career where he could have gone in a lot of different directions, Joey dropped AABA, one of the most politically-charged albums of the 2010s.

For me, this album has held up well and I think it's possibly Joey's best project overall, and shows a new level of versatility that people didn't really expect at the time. His lyrics are (purposely) toned down in terms of complexity from past projects, but his songwriting is a lot better imo, and it makes for a more accessible, still conscious type of lyricism that's in the same lane as guys like Common, A Tribe Called Quest, etc.

Some people criticized the album when it first came out for being a little "surface level" in its insights, but I think that's made up for by how musically strong and emotionally resonant it is, which really should be the point when making this kind of music anyway. Temptation and For My People are just super anthemic and empowering and optimistic, and I think that's what Joey was going for.

Amerikkkan Idol is just written/performed with so much conviction and boldness and skill, I think Joey deserves credit for being willing to lay it all out there like that in the way that he did, and his performance on the track is strong, especially the spoken word verse.

The back half of the album is loaded with great traditional rap tracks too. Babylon is maybe the most powerful song on the tracklist. And even Devastated has aged well for me. As the state of popular rap songs becomes more and more meme-centric, I think the song actually holds up pretty well as a poppy rap song done right and with a good, positive message.

How does that hold up for everyone 5 years later? What tracks have stuck around for people in their rotation? Where does this rank in Joey's discography?

And overall, how do you think the decision to go in this direction, as opposed to either completely staying in his lane from B4.DA.$$, or just flat out making an album chasing hits with more songs like Devastated, has effected Joey's career?
