Underappreciated great runs in hip-hop history.

Posted: 17 Mar 2022 08:22 AM PDT

What are some run of albums from producers or rappers over 3-5 albums or 2-3 years in hip-hop history that don't get brought up enough. The two that I'd nominate are Pink Siifu's current run from Ensley to Gumbo' Deluxe'!! and Billy Woods run from Paraffin to Haram. From collabs albums to solo one's both have dropped some of the best albums I've heard from a rapper in the current generation during their respective runs.

Best storytellers

Posted: 17 Mar 2022 09:03 AM PDT

I love hip hop songs with a good story, especially ones with a twist. My favorite storyteller is Slug from Atmosphere. Kendrick is also great at this, so was King Von. And Andre 3000 obviously. Immortal Technique is worth a mention too.

Who are your favorite storytellers? Specific songs?

[DISCUSSION] Smino - blkswn (5 years later)

Posted: 14 Mar 2022 08:18 AM PDT

On march 14th, 2017, Smino released his debut album blkswn to critical acclaim. The album includes features from Noname, Jean Deuex, theMIND, Bari and more and production from frequent collaborator Monte Booker.

I personally find this to be one of the best debut albums of the past 5 years, and Smino to be one of the most unique and interesting rappers right now and arguably the best flow in the game.

My favorite songs off this record are the title track, the intro Wild Irish Roses and the outro Amphetamine.

What are your personal highlights off the album?

How do you think this record aged?

Where do you see Smino in the next 5 years?

Tracklist:

  1. Wild Irish Roses

What rapper made the worst musical choices and ruined their career?

Posted: 14 Mar 2022 11:16 AM PDT

Not many know about this guy, but Jokerr. He is a decent producer and can rap, but he got mad at Hopsin and Tech N9ne early in his career, made diss songs against them and that ruined his career. He probably would've been well known in the underground scene, at the time. He's tried to restart his career, but his name has been tarnished.

[DISCUSSION] Consequence - Don't Quit Your Day Job! (15 Years Later)

Posted: 14 Mar 2022 10:27 AM PDT

Don't Quit Your Day Job! is the debut studio album by American rapper Consequence. It was released on GOOD Music and Columbia Records on March 6, 2007. The album features the song "Grammy Family", a song with DJ Khaled featuring Kanye West and John Legend, which also appeared on DJ Khaled's debut album "Listennn... the Album" and was released as a single in 2006. Guest appearances on the album include Kanye West, John Legend, Really Doe and GLC.

In the album's first week, it sold 7,490 units, while also debuting at #1 on the "Billboard" New Artist chart.[5] After criticism of the album, Consequence offered a refund deal on his MySpace page, claiming that anyone who purchased the album and didn't like any of the songs could contact him and get their money back.

What seems unbelievable today, but there was a time period when it was absolutely true?

Posted: 13 Mar 2022 07:51 AM PDT

Maybe we can have a discussion on rap related topics, about opinions or facts that may sound strange today, but were actually very real in some time period. I'll start:

Before Future became prince of modern trap sound, he was considered by many as merely knock off T-Pain, because of his heavy autotune use and pop-like mainstream singles. It even led to some twitter shots being fired by T-Pain himself.

Young Thug was literally obsessed with Lil Wayne, and before he found his own style, he copied everything he could from the GOAT (flow, clothes, style). Might be pretty obvious for those who remember why Barter 6 is named this way, but it may not be so apparent for those who know Young Thug only from his recent releases.

Rapper named Slim The Mobster was a Aftermath/Shady signee, who was supposed to be new mainstream juggernaut after 50 Cent, G-Unit and The Game, only to become completely irrelevant and forgotten without an album and a deal few years later.

When 2Chainz rose to mainstream popularity peak somewhere around 2010-2012, he was already rapping for 10+ years. (similar to Lil Durk today)

Rick Ross was a correctional officer, pretty known, but also pretty unbelievable for those who may not know.

Sounds pretty strange today but Yo Gotti goes way back to memphis rap sound originators (DJ Sound) and his original style was as dark, hypnotic and sinister as the rest of the Memphis scene in the 90's, which sounds nothing alike to what he does today.
