[DISCUSSION] Childish Gambino - "Awaken, My Love!" (5 Years Later)

Posted: 02 Dec 2021 07:20 AM PST

"Awaken, My Love!" is the third studio album by American recording artist Donald Glover, under his stage name Childish Gambino. It was released by Glassnote Records on December 2, 2016. Consisting of tracks being sung rather than rapped, its fusion of psychedelic soul, funk and R&B influences was considered a bold departure from the predominantly hip hop style of his prior work. The album was produced by Glover and his longtime collaborator, Ludwig Göransson.

What are your favorite songs from the album?

Have your feelings towards the album changed since it's release?

How do you think this album compares to Gambino's other projects?

Juicy J Says Three 6 Mafia Broke Up Due To Excessive Drug Use

Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:09 AM PST

"Hip Hop fans are preparing themselves for what is expected to be yet another monumental moment on Verzuz. After over a year of delays, cancellations, and false promises, we'll finally see Three 6 Mafia and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony join together on stage. As usual, Verzuz is a place for celebrating our icons and taking a stroll down the memory lane of their catalogs, but fans are still weighing in about which group they believe will take the battle crown.

Ahead of Three 6 Mafia's appearance, Juicy J caught up with Nas and Miss Info on their podcast The Bridge: 50 Years of Hip Hop where he spoke about the Memphis group's rise and eventual tumble. According to the Oscar winner, drugs played a significant role in their retreat from the spotlight.

"From heroin to meth to cocaine, all kinds of pills," J said of the group's breakup. "A lot of drugs were consumed during the times we were together. When everybody was sober and sh*t, everybody's on the same page But when cocaine's involved, things change. But I'm not pointing a figure at nobody."

He reportedly added that he couldn't think of any other reason why Three 6 Mafia struggled through that period. "People wasn't showing up in the studio," he said. "Business was crazy, everything's folding... it was the drugs." Make sure to tune into Verzuz on Thursday, December 2 at 6:30 p.m. PT/9:30 p.m. ET.

[DISCUSSION] What poorly received projects from the past five years will prove to be influential?

Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:32 AM PST

This question arose in my mind from seeing the discussion thread for Almighty So. The reception here seemed to be universally horrible. Reddit wasn't the only place to hate this album; I think universally after Chief Keef got dropped from Interscope, pretty much everyone wrote him off as a potential young GOAT that threw away all of his potential.

However, almost 8 years later, you can see the influence of this tape on the new generation of rappers. A song like "I Kno" arguably started the baby voice that Playboi Carti's Pissy Pamper and Molly/No Stylist would eventually popularize almost six years later. Listening to an older Carti song like "Heavy" also lets you draw parallells with a song like "Nice". And then, there's direct homages/tributes to Keef. A song like UnoTheActivist's "Filling Me Up" is a direct reference to "Me" off of Almighty so. Lucki's Days B4 III's cover is a direct copy of the Almighty So cover, and the sounds of the beats within are very similar to some of the beats that you'd find on Almighty So.

Other Chief Keef songs/eras influence artists like Lil Uzi as well, but I just wanted to document some sounds I thought were direct influences on other songs/albums.

Keeping this in mind, what albums do you think that have been ignored or poorly received will prove to be influential in the coming years? Hip hop is evolving faster than it ever has been, and we've been seeing that just because there's a consensus that something sounds bad in the culture doesn't mean that a young kid will hear it and come up with their own popular sound influenced by that.

Edit: To clarify what I mean by poorly received, it can be either critics panning it or a fan consensus that it was bad. Doesn't have to be both critics and fans shitting on it.
