Earl Sweatshirt's "Loose Change" - Rhyme Analysis

Posted: 17 Nov 2021 06:18 PM PST

Edit: Added some more rhymes that I missed, noted with an *

Earl's flow and rhyming has become increasingly more interesting and complex throughout the years. His rhymes are so understatedly dense it's hard to catch them on first listen. I think this can be most readily displayed on Loose Change. The first couple times I heard the song, I wasn't very impressed. Then one day YouTube recommended it to me and everything clicked. In terms of the way he flows and the way he organizes his rhyme schemes, I find him to be very unique and singular rapper.

You be with the boys and I'ma be with the dawgs

Blood on the Travies, it serve as a challenge coin

So we have 3 rhyme units being introduced here that get utilized throughout the whole song. Earl weaves these rhymes in somewhat non-standard fashion, which is why it can be hard to catch on first listen.

[boys] - the 'oy' sound

[be] - the 'ee' sound

[Trav] the 'a' sound

So, for the first four lines:

You be with the boys and I'ma be with the dawgs

Blood on the Travies, it serve as a challenge coin

I'm the voice, I had to speak for the org', passed the preacher

Smashed up weed on the organ, master teachings

[oy] [ee] [a] [or]
boys be Tra[vies] org
coin [Tra]vies cha[llenge] organ
voice speak passed
preach[er] smashed
weed mas[ter]
teach[ings]

Some of these rhymes can also be chained into rhyme complexes (multi-syllable rhymes). For example:

[ee] + [or] [a] + [ee]
Speak for the org Passed the preach[er]
Weed on the org[an] Smashed up weed
Master teach[ings]

I find it difficult to articulate how he places these rhymes in interesting pockets, which I think aids in why it can be hard to appreciate the rhyme density.

Next four lines

Actually couldn't hold me (who's gonna stop me?)

I was hungry

Mama made her son read, so I'm hunting glances 'til the peak

That still didn't feed me

I had to get a feel for the whole thing

[a] [uh] [ee]
Ac[tually] hun[gry] me
glan[ces] mama read
that son peak
had hun[ting] feed
me
feel

Notice how he's continued some of the rhyme units from the first four lines, noticeably the [a] and [ee] sounds. And again, these syllables aren't just individuated, isolated. We can form some rhyme complexes.

[uh] + [ee] [a] + [ee]
hungry *actually
son read Glances til the peak
That still didn't feed
*had to get a feel

And notice, the rhyme complex of [a] + [ee] has been continued from the first four lines (passed the preacher, smashed up weed, master teachings).

Next lines (my favorite)

Peek in the orbs, speak on what I absorb

Observed boundaries, I found a different route to explore

and run around deep

I told you 'bout the reaching, you found out and screamed

that sound to me like a loss

I had a bad 'bout with grief and I tossed a match on it

Kerosene, burned the ring down to ashes

And memories, feather feet behind

And ahead of the beat, throwing 'em off

Earl just goes off here, both in terms of rhymes and semantic meaning (which I won't really get into). I won't bother just listing the individual rhymes, but also the rhyme complexes.

[ee] + [or] [or] - singular [ou] + [ee] [ou] - singular [ou] + [ee] + [o] [a] [e] + [ee] [o] - singular
Peek in the orbs [expl]ore boundaries *found Sound to me like a loss bad kerosene off (rhymes with loss and toss)
Speak on what I absorb Round deep route 'bout with grief and I tossed ash[es] memories
'Bout the reach[ing' feather feet
Found out and screamed ahead of the beat
Sound to me
'Bout with grief'

It's so dense but somehow understatedly so. There's so much intricacy in terms of rhymes: mixing and matching rhyme units in interesting ways while still not just randomly rhyming words. Notice how he brings back the rhyme complex [ee] + [or] which he had used earlier in the verse (speak for the org, weed on the organ). He also gives a nod to his interesting flow, talking about how how he's "behind and ahead of the beat, throwing 'em off, arriving in the nick of time…"

My favorite part was the 3 syllable rhyme scheme ou + [ee] + [o], the way he says it. It sort of comes out like this:

that sound to me like a loss

I had a bad 'bout with grief

and I tossed…

Introducing the word 'tossed' as the beginning of a new line, when it's earlier rhyme partner, 'loss', was the end of the rhyme, while still having the [ou] + [ee] internals. It's hard to explain why I find his flow so interesting. But I believe Earl's flow is genuinely something to behold. I'm not sure how he does what he does.

PSA: The First 2 Organized Konfusion Albums Just Got Added to Spotify

Posted: 17 Nov 2021 04:59 AM PST

Organized Konfusion was a '90s rap duo from Queens consisting of Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po. They were down with OC, Buckwild, and Q-Tip among others and pretty influential despite never receiving much commercial success.

I guess the group just got rights to their masters from Hollywood Records because the first 2 Organized albums just got added to Spotify and both are amazing. Monch has had a fine solo career but he is on a completely other level with Organized Konfusion. The amount of energy he brings on each track is insane. Their 1994 album Stress: The Extinction Agenda is my favorite album released that year and probably my favorite hip-hop album period. Prince Po is no slouch either and the production is fantastic throughout.

Their debut release Organied Konfusion is a little rawer, lighter, and looser but incredibly strong overall too. Both are definitely worth a listen if you an iota of interest in 90s rap. These are some of the best albums released during that period.

Their third album Equinox is solid too and has some interesting song concepts but doesn't hold a candle to the first 2 albums.

[DISCUSSION] The Game - Doctor's Advocate (15 Years Later)

Posted: 17 Nov 2021 07:00 AM PST

Doctor's Advocate is the second studio album by American hip hop recording artist The Game), released on November 14, 2006, through The Black Wall Street Records and Geffen Records. The album is his second major-label release, following 2005's The Documentary, which was released on Aftermath/G-Unit. Due to his disputes with 50 Cent, Game left Aftermath/G-Unit and signed with Geffen Records, another label under Universal Music Group's Interscope-Geffen-A&M division to terminate his contractual obligations with G-Unit, in the summer of 2006.

Despite the absence of Dr. Dre, who executive produced Game's debut record, The Documentary, the album featured production by four other returning producers—Kanye West, Just Blaze, Scott Storch and Hi-Tek—as well as will.i.am and Swizz Beatz. Production for the album was also contributed by DJ Khalil, Jellyroll, Jonathan "J.R." Rotem, Mr. Porter, Nottz, Reefa, Ervin "E.P." Pope and D-Roc, among others.

Doctor's Advocate debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling over 360,000 copies in its first week, making it Game's 2nd No. 1 album in a row.[2][3]

Guests featured on Doctor's Advocate include Busta Rhymes, Kanye West, Nas, Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound, Jamie Foxx and Xzibit. Upon its release, the album received favorable reviews, with music critics praising the album's production and The Game's improved lyricism. Game made a point to prove that he could still make good music and be a successful artist, as he did on The Documentary, without the help from Dr. Dre or 50 Cent.[4][5] As with The Documentary, Doctor's Advocate was distributed in the United Kingdom by Polydor Records, which is the British distributor for Interscope-Geffen-A&M releases. Game later called Doctor's Advocate the best album of his career in 2012.[6]

Posted: 16 Nov 2021 04:00 PM PST

Fear of God II: Let Us Pray is the major record label debut and extended play by American rapper Pusha T, released on November 8, 2011, under G.O.O.D. Music.[citation needed] The EP was his first project with Kanye West's GOOD Music label, since the announcement of his signing in September 2010. Pusha T claims his inspiration for Fear of God is that a vast majority of the people who he came in the music business with are in prison: "I came in the game with super producers. We made hit records. I never thought that it gets deeper. But not for nothing, 2009 I lost eight of my friends to incarceration. Everybody that I came in to the rap game with, and when I realized that those components weren't there anymore, the 'Fear of God)' really came over me. It's full of the dichotomy of 'right and wrong' and 'good and evil'. A lot of it deals with greed. A lot of it deals with instant gratification. Personally... life without instant gratification... I don't know what it is."

Pusha T established his solo career in mid-2010, while still in the Clipse with Malice), appearing on songs "Runaway)" and "So Appalled" by Kanye West, propagating his features.
